Release date for "A Ham in a Role"

edit

Hi there. I'm Bryan H. Bell. You and I have been editing Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies filmography (1940–49) pretty frequently lately, and while we've been disagreeing over lots of stuff, it's nice to at least meet someone who's passionate about animation like I am. I've been a fan of classic cel animation as long as I can remember. In fact, I worked in the industry for several years as an animation cameraman. Anyway, I'm writing to you here about the release date of the cartoon A Ham in a Role. You've been changing it to say December 31, 1949, but all the sources I can find list its release date as December 13. I guess its a fine point, but I was interested in finding out what sources you've found that list the December 31st date. Here are the sources I've found, which all list it as December 13th:

What sources are you seeing that show a different release date? --Bryan H Bell (talk) 04:01, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Well in book: "The That's All Folk's!, The Art of Warner Bros Animation by Steve Schneider 1988. On Page 246, it said that Rabbit Hood was released December 24 & A Ham on a Role was Released on December 31. That's what is said's. --User:Kylefan92 (talk) 11:07, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • In this regard, if you have found a source that contradicts something set forth in an article, you can't just change the text to what you think it should be - particularly if the only source that is cited supplies only the original information that you believe to be incorrect. You need to 1) add your own source and 2) make sure that the article text conforms to what the cited sources say. If there is disagreement among the sources, then it may be best to reflect that in the text - "released on December 13 or 31" - and then cite to both. I have reverted your change to "31" on that page because it was inconsistent with the references there. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 15:45, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks, Kylefan92, for providing a source for the release date! I don't have that book (maybe I'll see if I can pick it up) and its contents aren't available anywhere online so I can't verify it, but nonetheless I've updated both the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies filmography (1940–49) and A Ham in a Role articles to indicate that there are differing sources with regard to this cartoon's release date. I've also included a citation pointing to the Schneider book.
In case you're unfamiliar with how to provide citations in Wikipedia, here's where you can read more about how to do it: Wikipedia:Citing sources. I used a template called Cite Book to add the information about the Schneider book to the two articles. Feel free to copy the code I used if you'd like to use that book as a reference for any other edits you might apply. Also, I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about citing sources on Wikipedia.   Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies filmography (1940–49), is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. JohnInDC (talk) 15:39, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
