Let me be the first to welcome you and commend you on your enthusiasm and ability to follow instructions. The Wikipedia mantra is BE BOLD. For me at least, just making an account took a great deal of courage. The next logical step in your Wikipedia indoctrination is to energize your home page. It will serve as an excellent place to learn some of the basic wiki-codes without dorking up an article. Editing skills will require some experimentation and self teaching. The easiest way to start is to visit others and “steal” some ideas. By that - I mean click the edit tab and see their html codes which you can copy and paste into yours. CAREFUL --- don’t edit their page…. COPY not cut!!!!! You can then adjust it to reflect your own personal style. Feel free to be creative. Try to provide some insight into who you are while still maintaining your Anonymity. Personally I like the community’s use of user boxes to provide some insight into your way of thinking. --JimmyButler (talk) 02:01, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. You will find a surprising amount of support for your class project. Don't worry too much about the details of Wikipedia...just add good reliable content...which is far harder to do than endless formatting! Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 02:43, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I saw this line: Over 451,000 Americans die of coronary heart disease every year about a topic that consist of something like two sentences?!!!. It is either a major topic in serious neglect or their is a counterpart already out there that covers it under a different heading. We might need to ask around to see which.--JimmyButler (talk) 00:09, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there

edit

I saw you requested some guidance from Moni3 (talk · contribs), but then removed the request..if you're still looking, please feel free to call on me. By the way, you can feel free to let your teacher know that a pretty experienced Wikipedia editor thinks that getting an article to GA is a pretty tough assignment for a 10th grade class! Not impossible by any means, but it will take a lot of work. I am happy to help where I can, and am interested to know how it goes! By the way, the Oregon WikiProject's blog might be helpful, we try to write a fair amount of tips for new editors. Happy editing! -Pete (talk) 01:32, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Glad to help! Sorry, my knowledge of biology is not great, so I'm not sure I can help you determine whether the stub you chose should be merged with the existing, similarly-named article or not. My suggestion would be to post a question on the discussion page for WP:BIOLOGY. That looks like a reasonably active WikiProject, where people with more experience with biology-related articles can weigh in on whether expanding or merging that stub is the best thing to do. It would be very frustrating for you to spend a lot of time on an article only to have it merged with an existing one, so getting some informed opinions ahead of time is a very good idea.
Also, if you haven't already, you should look at the Good article criteria page, to get a sense of what is expected of a good article; and look at a few Good article reviews. You will find the reviews on the discussion page of a GA. Here is a list of some GA's I'm familiar with; click on any one of them, then click on the "discussion" tab, and look for a section called "GA review" (or something similar). It's important to look at more than one, as different GA reviewers approach the task differently; some are very exacting, others are a little more lenient (not unlike high school teachers, I guess!)
I hope that helps, let me know how that all goes. -Pete (talk) 02:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Checks

edit

Sometimes I get a bit lost in all the text of "to-do" lists. Checks like these:   Done and   Not done have become my best friends! I would suggest that you use them not only to keep your own head straight, but to let the people who are helping you know what you have/haven't addressed. --Yohmom (talk) 22:32, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re-did your GA nomination review. Still a fail (sorry!) but it's cleaned up and at least you can perhaps understand what you need to fix better. The green cross means good while that nasty red minus is bad (and the ? means I'm not certain... probably leaning to bad). Hope it clarifies some of the issues. Also, be sure to take a look at those tips several people have posted on your article's talk page - your GA nom. has spurred increased interest and support! :-) FoodPuma 23:40, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

nice article in your sandbox. I have disabled the categories, though; they shouldn't be used until the article is moved to mainspace... I happened to stumble across your sandbox-page in all of them. Cheers! Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 13:24, 19 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Main page appearance: Macaroni Penguin

edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Macaroni Penguin know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 2, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 2, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The Macaroni Penguin is a species of penguin found from the Subantarctic to the Antarctic Peninsula. One of six species of crested penguin, it bears a distinctive yellow crest, and the face and upperparts are black and sharply delineated from the white underparts. Its diet consists of a variety of crustaceans, mainly krill, as well as small fish and cephalopods; the species consumes more marine life annually than any other species of seabird. Numbering up to 100,000 individuals, the breeding colonies of the Macaroni Penguin are among the largest and densest of all penguin species. After spending the summer months breeding, penguins disperse into the oceans for six months; a 2009 study found that Macaroni Penguins from Kerguelen travelled over 10,000 km (6,200 mi) in the central Indian Ocean. With about 18 million individuals, the Macaroni Penguin is the most numerous penguin species. However, widespread decline in populations have been recorded since the mid 1970s. These factors result in their conservation status being reclassified as vulnerable. (more...)

Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! Sarah (talk) 02:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
