Group Discussion?

edit

Hey group,

I checked your talk pages but I must be the first one to be posting, hopefully you are cool if I just start the discussion for Assignment 3 here. Let me know if I missed somewhere that you already started a discussion.

Possible Article: Cognitive Appraisal

edit

I've spent some time looking through articles for the project.

The "best" (as in looking like it has the most potential) article I've found is Cognitive Appraisal. It is only about a paragraph on the topic and only uses two sources. It is a concept I remember being discussed at least a few times throughout my psych classes. I know the big thing it relates to is how an individual deals with a stressors, which could be an entire section alone. I did a Google Scholar search on cognitive appraisal and from skimming the results there is a ton of research about how cognitive appraisal relates to a variety of other topics (coping, emotions, therapy, empathy, physiological responses, etc.). Also, there is no mention of Lazarus in the current article, the psychologist who introduced the idea and did a lot of work on it, probably another way that we could expand it.

That got kind of long, basically I think there is a lot of potential to expand the current article and a ton of information available on it. I would hate to choose a topic where getting relevant information is a challenge. There is the drawback though on possibly having too much information to go through.

So far this is the only article that I feel like has some potential, so hopefully you two find something just so we have some options. Also, let me know what you think and if there are any other advantages/disadvantages I didn't bring up.

Thanks

Hey Nick,

I checked out the article Cognitive Appraisal, and I definitely agree that there is a lot more we could add to it! I think we could really expand on the ties between cognitive appraisal and how Lazarus' book Psychological Stress and Coping Process helped advance this topic. I think this article would be a really interesting to review and a lot of "potential" as well! If we don't want to go into a mass amount of detail on this one topic, I also checked out Richard Lazarus and it appeared to be rather simple and plain and I'm sure we could find more information to add. There doesn't appear to be much information on his history and background. It states his work but it does not go into detail about what his work evolved to and influenced which could be significant as well. Let me know what you think! Hi guys,

After reading the article Cognitive Appraisal, I think that's our best option. There is plenty to discuss about it and gives us lots of freedom to add our input to it. I also read the other article Kendra posted, Richard Lazarus. This article could also use some work. Both articles are great starting points but could use improvement.
