Lee Asher

edit

Mr Asher: There's a controversy over whether you are notable enough to be in Wikipedia. Please see WP:VAIN and the talk page at Talk:Lee Asher. Wikipedia has explicit policies on notability, and the standards are rather high. Normally, biographies in Wikipedia are posted by others, not oneself. There's a formal process for resolving "articles for deletion" disputes, and it will probably be started shortly. Thanks. --John Nagle 21:51, 31 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia! I'd like to take the opportunity to give you a few tips and tricks; you might think of this as a basic orientation to membership in the editing community of this project.

We have quite a few guidelines and policies for editor conduct here. Not everyone agrees with all of these rules but most of us agree with those labeled Policy; and those labeled Guideline have broad, though not universal support. These policies and guidelines are in constant flux but those that have remained fairly stable over time are highly respected. I suggest you take some time to familiarize yourself with these.

A good starting place is Help:Editing. This will teach you about the mechanics of editing using our tools.

Another important starting place is Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. I strongly suggest you follow all the links from this page, especially those listed at the bottom under See Also.

Nearly every policy-related page is linked to one or more others. You may wish to spend several hours reviewing this material. Although officially we welcome all users to Edit this page, in practice it takes several months of daily editing before you can expect to avoid all common mistakes. Meanwhile, you may be schooled -- gently, we hope, but not always -- by experienced editors who have discovered some error in your work. I suggest you listen carefully to all comments and try to keep an open mind.

Please don't be dismayed! We can use an editor in your specialized field of knowledge. If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to ask me on my talk page. John Reid 06:10, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vanity and sockpuppetry

edit

Like many new editors, you seem to have run afoul of one of our most strict guidelines; I expect it to be elevated to policy soon. This is Wikipedia:Vanity guidelines. Strictly speaking, it is not a violation of policy to create an article about yourself or your company; but so many editors have strong feelings about this that it is unwise. It leads to the kind of fine-toothed scrutiny that leads to articles being deleted on other grounds.

Our position is If you are notable, then sooner or later some other editor will create an article about you. You don't need to do it yourself. Again, no need for you to edit an article about yourself; somebody else will find out whatever factual information is available publicly and insert it or correct it. If some fact about you is not publicly available then we can't publish it anyway.

You appear to have committed another faux pas: sockpuppetry. This droll term refers to the act of editing under more than one registered user name. You seem to deny this in your email to User:Nagle; but this is not really here nor there: there is no way to prove, absolutely, that a user is a sock; nor is there any way to disprove it. Experienced members of our community can and do make rapid judgements of sockpuppetry; some admins are able to perform internal checks but results are never absolutely conclusive.

Nonetheless, it is the prevailing opinion that Lee Asher was created by you; and there is very little you can do to dispel this perception. If you abandon all efforts to edit this article (and perhaps abandon Generuffalo (talk · contribs)) then in time the issue will fade away. John Reid 06:24, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Ross bert sig copy.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 19:41, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Possibly unfree Image:SS-logo.jpg

edit

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:SS-logo.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the image description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 14:40, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Servais Le Roy

edit

I noticed you have Servais Le Roy in your list of articles you plan to start sometime. I just wanted to point out that there's already an article on Servais Le Roy. Any additional information you can contribute to that will be very welcome. Circusandmagicfan (talk) 09:03, 1 October 2008 (UTC)CircusandmagicfanReply

You're right... I did not notice it. I will remove it from my list of to-do. Before I add additional info, I want to assimilate the rest. Thanks for the heads-up. Lee Asher (talk)

Jean Hugard

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Jean Hugard, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://geniimagazine.com/wiki/index.php/Jean_Hugard. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. RE:Jack Chanin

I removed the Ukrainian magicians category because Wikipedia does not have one. I also changed the title of "Books and Media about" to "Further reading" and slightly reformatted the article, per your concerns.

Manual of Style

edit

Hi, this is just a quick note to ask you to make sure that your new articles follow the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Have a look at some of our better biographical articles to see how they're formatted. For a quick look, I'd recommend glancing at some of the biographies on the Wikipedia:Good articles page. Thanks. Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:American-playing-cards.jpg.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work contained within this image, you will need to specify

  1. the creator of the original work
  2. the copyright status of the original work, usually indicated by adding a licensing tag. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:32, 11 August 2012 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 17:32, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Ross bertram.jpg missing description details

edit
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as:

is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors make better use of the image, and it will be more informative to readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions, please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Theo's Little Bot (error?) 05:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Jack Chanin

edit

The article Jack Chanin has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Can't find reliable sources that would show this passes WP:GNG. Nothing more than trivial mentions in books, and no reliable websites. Currently this article is sourced to "MagicPedia" which is a magic-focused wiki and extremely unreliable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 00:35, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Ross bertram.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Ross bertram.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 00:50, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
