Orphaned non-free media (File:IndieWire-logo-180.jpg)

Regarding quotations for article names

My experience with titles and article names is more with professional academic journals outside of Wikipedia, though I think Wikipedia can greatly benefit from citation styles from other sources. NOT using quotes for article names has become quite common over the last twenty years in the academic community. The reason seems to be two-fold: 1) Quotes mean an exact quote of something someone else has said, thus not quite proper for article names, and, 2) adding quotations when the journal title is already set apart by italics (or underlining) makes the marks redundant. I can't say I exactly agree, but I take your point. The quotes are an aid (to me) in delimiting titles in long multi-column lists of citations, so I've become comfortable with them. Perhaps it is time to re-open the discussion about how our templates operate, both about quotes and about date positioning. If, as you say, the nonquoted title is the academic standard, I wonder why our templates ever used quotes. I love templates, so I don't have to bother with fiddly punctuation, and that if standards shift, I don't have to go back and adjust anything - the template does it automatically. --Lexein (talk) 03:47, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Lexein. I just read today your comment at CHU/S regarding RTI LLC / ReismanS, and the request is closed already so I thought of replying here. Normally a redirect is created automatically with every rename, but there wasn't any actual rename in this case. I think it'd be okay to create a redirect or to leave a follow-up note if you want, but the old account has only a handful of edits, and it looks to me that it is pretty much abandoned now, so it won't make much difference. How "many users" fell prey to this exploit? [1]

A lot, actually. There were similar problems with the /echo command earlier in mIRC's history, too. With /echo, a script simply displaying processed text in a window could be abused to execute arbitrary commands on the victim's computer. --Tothwolf (talk) 19:32, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey, good to hear from ya. Oh, I don't dispute the claim, just seeking a source. I found in RS discussion of examples and even a tutorial(as you saw), and a "low risk" assessment by one vendor, but no RS reports of an outbreak. Now that Google doesn't automatically include newsgroups in search, I keep forgetting to look there. --Lexein (talk) 20:14, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the best source for background on this stuff isn't archived or really usable for articles, and that was support channels such as #mIRC on IRC itself. Because this stuff is so IRC-centric, a lot of bugs in mIRC such as the /echo issue were heavily discussed on IRC, but not discussed nearly as much on public email lists. Few archives exist today of many of those email lists, and web forums were not as commonplace back then, either. When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense too, because for someone who is using IRC to go fire up an email client or web browser to discuss something IRC-related would be kinda redundant to discussing something on IRC. This really is causing us a lot of grief now while trying to cover this part of the online community and portion of internet history... --Tothwolf (talk) 21:52, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I've always used paragraph, or sentence-group, citations, followed with a comment e.g.

<ref name=Smith/><!-- whole para --> This works as long as all claims really are supported by the same cite page or a few pages.

I don't like it when a four sentence paragraph is end-cited from a whole book or a dozen page range such as:

<ref>Smith 2010, pp 48-60</ref> Here, the ref should be written:

Should Joseph Baldwin Academy be nominated for AfD?

Hi Lexein. Can you look at Joseph Baldwin Academy and see if you think it should be nominated for AfD? To me, the whole article simply looks like a blatant advertisement or brochure for a completely non-notable program and all the sourcing is to the program's own website pages. The article even has the program's Summer 2012 schedule, which clearly seems to be inappropriate content and only there for promotional purposes. Also, if you look at the talk page, the article appears to have been created, and perhaps has been maintained, by the program's own students as part of a project. The talk page also has a comment from one of the academy's kids who seems to think that article content was just copy and pasted from the program's own website. • Tough one. Accredited Universities get a pass usually (See WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES), but not IMHO such overdetail about a specific, and smallish program. There is independent coverage (but isn't in the article yet), so the article seems to survive WP:N and the guidelines linked in WP:SCHOOL. WP:COI isn't a good reason for deletion, but the kids should be advised of the guideline, and their responsibilities per that. IMHO, the article shouldn't have been created in mainspace - it should have been created in WP:AFC, but that ship has sailed. The article does merit cleanup per, WP:BROCHURE and WP:CATALOG. Per WP:BEFORE, the article is salvageable by improvement - editing and trimming of any raw WP:PROMO material, and adding independent WP:RS to address the lack of them. I found these news items. Though some resemble press releases, a few are about students. If any of those students later became notable (it has been going since 1985), that would help. I think it's a keeper, with some required improvements.

The problem I saw, though, is that the article is not in fact about an accredited university; it's simply about a summer program that happens to take place at an accredited university. I understand. But the initial revert was done immediately after I made my edits, without even reading or comparing what was done. First thanks for your voice supporting this article. Now that the article have more sources and have been accepted I expanded the article´s content. My English being unperfect, may you watch this article and copy edit my 2 sections. I also asked on the official D3 google group some helps, which I will watch. They are likely to add full sections of sample code which are not much welcome. I will be there to keep the content in the line with wikipedia usages, yet, I will keep open minded and looking forward to have some few enlightening samples. 1.
