Not biting a newbie

edit

I suspect that you, rather than wilfully violating one of Wikipedia's most solid customs, are simply unaware of it. Please read WP:NPOV carefully. We do not call a book "acute" or "profound" in Wikipedia's voice because the editor liked it; or worse, because the author's biographer liked it, and so we have the judgment at second hand. This is especially true of controversial books like Morris's Diary, which has been an instrument of partisan politics in France and America for two centuries.

And it's not just books; Wikipedia's purpose on historical articles is to reflect the consensus of scholarship, and when there isn't one (and on Morris there isn't, and is not like to be) to reflect the various sides proportionately. See also the reasoning of WP:CITE. Septentrionalis

Thank you for not biting this newbie. I had read the WP:NPOV, but obviously not carefully enough: my sincere apologies. I'm going to work on another version of the Morris re-write because I think that his years in France and his diary warrant more than a brief mention, but this time I hope to correct my errors. --Linden Salter 02:06, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
And I apologize for the intemperance of my edit summary. Septentrionalis
Oh please do; it is important, and his years in France are underrated. Septentrionalis 03:45, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that advice, that apology, and above all that encouragement. It's all a bit overwhelming at first, and I concentrated too much on the technical side of how to format at the expense of how and what to write. But I shall get the hang of it, and, I hope, sooner rather than later. --Linden Salter 11:39, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
