Overview of LSU Health Shreveport

LSU Health Shreveport is comprised of three professional schools - The LSU School of Medicine, The LSU School of Graduate Studies and the LSU School of Graduate Studies.

The LSU School of Medicine opened in 1969 with the first graduates received their degrees in 1973. Its founders were Joseph Edward Holoubek (1915-2007) of Shreveport and Edgar Hull, who in 1931 had worked to establish the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.[1]

The establishment of the LSU School of Graduate Studies followed soon thereafter in 1974 conferring their first PhD degree wards in 1978. In 1977, the School of Allied Health Professions was established with its first graduating class occurring in 1980. Today almost 900 students are enrolled in these three professional schools.

The institution also includes basic and clinical research, graduate medical education (GME) and three centers of excellence. (Center of Excellence for Arthritis and Rheumatology, Feist Weiller Cancer Center and Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences) Also offered is Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree made possible through a cooperative endeavor agreement with LSU-Shreveport.

In October 2016, G. E. Ghali MD DDS FACS FRCS(ed) was named the third chancellor in the history of LSU Health Shreveport.
