Hello, Little Bellbird, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Tutorial
- How to edit a page and How to develop articles
- How to create your first article (using the Article Wizard if you wish)
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}}
before the question. Again, welcome! Moriori (talk) 23:35, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Your edit to Feilding
editYou placed a comment in the Feilding article saying the information about the flood was incorrect. It was a true record of something that happened in Feilding. However, if you have referenced material to show that the HRC has completed works to lessen/negate flood risk, then please add it to the article. Both bits of info can coexist. Cheers. Moriori (talk) 23:35, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
And
editWhen you add material to an article, you do not add your signature to that page as well (but you do so when editing on talk pages).
I have changed your most recent addition. If you have a look here at my edit you can see the changes I made, especially the converting of your url to a reference, and giving 2009 as the date the scheme was commissioned. Cheers . Moriori (talk) 01:27, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of User:ManawatuNZ
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on User:ManawatuNZ, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 03:15, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below).
A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
on your user talk page. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Adding
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Daniel Case (talk) 04:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Here are a few key questions:
- Do you understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory?
- Do you understand conflict of interest?
- Do you understand that to be considered for an encyclopedia article, the subject must be notable?
You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Max Semenik (talk) 21:01, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

- You're turning an encyclopedia article into a travel/tourism brochure, which is not permitted. Do you work for the town/township? We don't care about the style of "Monmouthpedia", as they have a very different perspective - ours is to be an encyclopedia. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 13:05, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- I believe when the user talks about Monmouthpedia they mean Wikipedia:GLAM/MonmouthpediA. Pertinent questions might be whether the user has been in touch with User:Mrjohncummings (who started MonmouthpediA); has reviewed how Monmouthpedia operates; or has read and understood Wikipedia:GLAM_getting_started. Stuartyeates (talk) 17:22, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- As such, it should be noted that the Monmouthpedia articles are not within the typical realm of Wikipedia articles. The purpose of Monmouthpedia is extremely different from Wikipedia, as per the stated goals. As such, the Wikipedia article should be kept within the MOS of Wikipedia, and if there's a desire to create a similar concept to Monmouthpedia outside the normal Wikipedia realm, then that's fine - it will require significant work, and as already noted, the editor should try to contact the "founder" of Monmouthpedia. - Comment1 It looks to me the edits made were in good faith. Is it appropiate to add these conditions to creating the new account? Richard-of-Earth (talk) 21:48, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- Comment2 User:Little Bird (with a space) has been inactive for a long time, but you still may want a more unique name. Have a look at List of birds of New Zealand.

NB: I've tried clicking on a lot of links to figure this out. Is this how I change my username? I tried the "change username" link, but it said my current account was already in use. Don't think it works. --ManawatuNZ (talk) 19:49, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you everyone for your comments and clarifications. I'm in touch with John Cummings and he's very pleased that I wish to do a similar project, and wishes to assist. We're planning to keep in close contact. --ManawatuNZ (talk) 19:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
ManawatuNZ, I've received your e-mail. I really do think that private discussion, except in very limited circumstances, runs counter to the community environment we strive to perpetuate on this project. I regret that you have found Wikipedia's policies and guidelines so restrictive. I think you will agree that some type of order is necessary when a project is open to editing by hundreds of millions of people. I have not looked into the particulars of this situation because I know the work of the other administrators that have commented here and I trust their judgement. They are long-time contributors to this project and are very knowledgeable regarding Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. What's more important, though, is that I have seen them help many contributors through rough beginnings. They do this because they understand the value that comes from new perspectives and initiatives. Please answer their concerns; ask them for clarification on points that you may not fully grasp. I think you will find them most helpful. Regards Tiderolls 05:03, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I find this talk page confusing, hence why emailing. I don't know how to undo people's edits or don't know whether people can see my posts by putting them here. Happy to chat openly. Just trying to get the grips of using this technology. --ManawatuNZ (talk) 19:36, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi ManawatuNZ, We can see your posts. To get your new account they just want you to answer three question posted by Max Semenik above. I'll repeat them here:
- Do you understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory?
- Do you understand conflict of interest?
- Do you understand that to be considered for an encyclopedia article, the subject must be notable?
- There use to be a user "User:Little Bird" (with a space), so they might want you to make a new name. I suggested "Little Bellbird" from List of birds of New Zealand, but you can pick one yourself. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 19:52, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Richard of Earth. Fingers crossed I'm able to secure Little Bellbird. :-)--ManawatuNZ (talk) 19:54, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Great, so go ahead and answer those questions as best you can. Let us know if you have questions. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 19:58, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you :-) --ManawatuNZ (talk) 20:41, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. I don't intend to use it as a brochure or business directory. I'd like to comply with Wikipedia policy. I understand conflict of interest in the context of Wikipedia, and would like to plead the point that everyone has an agenda when posting on Wikipedia. I don't wish to be blocked because of my day job. I live in the township of Feilding, I have strong community links (volunteer work with Keep Feilding Beautiful, working with archives to do research, helping out with the Christmas Parade...all sorts.). I chose to move there and start my family, and this is where my heart lies. It's a personal project..both exciting, yet daunting, because of the huge learning curve of this system and coordinating it all. I'm not even sure how to reply to you directly, other than post directly underneath your questions. I believe by notable you mean that it needs citation - online references, and perhaps also comment by other Wikipedia users. This would keep the information real, and hence the forum not to be used as a glossy magazine, because it's not about hyped up information, but facts. I believe that I can write in an unbiased style (non-promotional) and will do my best to provide online references. --ManawatuNZ (talk) 20:40, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Great, we just wait for someone with the authority to change your name and remove the block. They are called Bureaucrats and I posted a notice on their noticeboard. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 21:04, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- The next thing you might try is to get a mentor (see WP:Mentor) at WP:Adopt-a-user who is good at the type of editing you wish to do. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 21:14, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Notable
editHi, Little Bellbird. I'm glad to see that your username problem has been overcome and you're able to edit now. I wanted to post a link to help explain "notability" on Wikipedia. The guideline can be found at Wikipedia:Notability. That page provides general coverage of the guideline and more use-specific guidelines for notability can be found at Category:Wikipedia notability guidelines. Don't be put off by what at first glance may appear to be a complicated maze of rules. There are usually editors watching the talk pages associated with the notability guidelines and they will be glad to respond to any request for clarification you post. Additionally, notability issues may discussed on article talk pages; on occasion article talk pages aren't as actively monitored so the notability talk pages might provide quicker responses. See ya 'round Tiderolls 04:47, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. It's good to know that books can also be referenced. Good to know where all of this useful information lies. It would be great if it was a PDF download, but I'm also fine reading it online and trying to absorb it all. :-) --Little Bellbird (talk) 00:25, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Welcome
editHi Little Bellbird, I just wanted to welcome you to Wikipedia. It's sometimes a bit of a daunting place, because it's so full of rules and regulations. You seem full of enthusiasm and I hope you don't lose your energy by being knocked around by coming up against those rules too often. You mention online sources above and I thought I'd clarify that sources do not need to be online; if you've got a local history book, it's fine to use that as a reference, for example. I've watchlisted your talk page, so you can post questions here and I'll see that you need some help. Just say when you'd like to have something explained; there are lots of great NZ Wikipedians who would only be too happy to give you a hand. All the very best. Schwede66 07:32, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Awh Thank you! Really appreciated. I'm finding the coding a bit baffling, but I'd like to get advanced skills in this area. It's useful to know that physical books can be referenced. I didn't know this, and it opens up a huge amount of available resources. I really appreciate your enthusiasm. It's great to come across fellow Wikipedia enthusiasts.. I'm feeling very welcomed, thank you! --Little Bellbird (talk) 00:29, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- This edit [1] suggests you're heading in the right direction. Good work. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:28, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Stuart! I just wrote a little to see if I was on the right track.. --219.88.181.191 (talk) 02:50, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Request for a favour
editHi Little Bellbird, I've recently expanded an article for a 'local', from this (which didn't even give any indication to the person having anything to do with New Zealand) to something a bit more comprehensive: Francis Arkwright (politician). It must be my first substantial article ever where I've not been able to find any photos / paintings that I can use. I have two thoughts where you may be able to help:
- Could you possibly take a photo of his homestead, Overton, which is just off SH1 on the Rangitikei River near Marton? Here are links to the Historic Places Trust listing and a recent article in the Dominion Post, in case you don't know where the place is.
- If you ever go to the museum in Feilding, could you see whether they have a photo / painting of him? He's been dead for long enough that any copyright would have long expired (despite what they might write on their signs at the museum).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Schwede66 04:54, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Certainly. I've just left a message with John Vickers, who does historic home tours of Rangitikei. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. The home looks grand and in lovely condition from the Dom Post link. I look forward to being in touch soon about this. --Little Bellbird (talk) 22:21, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
License tagging for File:Steam Train Driver.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Steam Train Driver.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.
To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 00:06, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- I think the licence you added is fine, and so I have removed the warning from the image page. I've also placed the image at Feilding and District Steam Rail Society.
- However, your edit summary said "The image was taken by me for public domain use on Wikipedia", and that's open to misinterpretation. The license allows the image to be used anywhere, not just on Wikipedia (and we don't accept images which are restricted just to Wikipedia). If this really was your intention - you don't want anyone but Wikipedia to use the image - then reply to me below and I'll remove the image for you. If you really are putting the image into the public domain, then thanks very much! I don't think you need to do anything further.
- You might like to consider putting any further images on Wikimedia Commons, where they can be used directly by other language versions of Wikipedia and other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation.-gadfium 02:01, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much. It's a confusing thing. I need a tutorial. The Wikipedia information is too comprehensive, if there is such an expression. I was trying to put it into Wikipedia Commons..I spent about five minutes clicking around trying to find where I could upload it.. --203.114.136.216 (talk) 02:24, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- The commons is at commons.wikimedia.org. You may already be logged in there - I'm not quite sure how the login system works since I created my account so long ago. The place to start reading there is Commons:Contributing your own work.
- I'll tag the photo of the train driver to be transferred over to commons.-gadfium 03:19, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
File source problem with File:Steam Train Driver.jpg
edit
Thank you for uploading File:Steam Train Driver.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:05, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
