Welcome some feedback

Hello, my name is Isucheme and I am currently writing my first Wikipedia article on the Churchill-Bernstein Equation. The equation is used to find an average (convection) heat transfer coefficient to use in Newton’s Law of cooling for a cylinder in cross flow, and the mass transfer analogy, as described in the article, can be employed to find a mass transfer coefficient. Bot bug

Please note that when your bot did this edit, it wrote the result to a title of Hot R instead of the proper one. Presumably it was thrown by the ampersand in the title. -- RHaworth 03:36, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

CounterVandalismBot

Hi Lloydpick. Your bot has inspired me to create my own anti vandalism bot! I have two questions about your bot. First, what url do you use to rollback vandalism? Second, what do you use to make sure the bot doesn't revert the same article twice in a 12 hour period? Thanks. PxMa 22:07, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, glad I have inspired you to create a bot :) There is only one way to adjust articles and its the same method that the usual editors use. You have to send a HTTP request to WP asking for the edit page, parse some variables out of it, then submit the form. Can get quite complex if you don't pick out the variables correctly. My bot has a mySQL backend attached to it, this way I have a record of everything its done and for what reasons. So if there are false positives I can see what calculations the bot ended up doing and work out what went wrong. Each disruptive edit the bot encounters gets given a new entry in the database where its tracked across several tables. If it knows its reverted an article in the past 12 hours (just a simple query) then it stops. Good luck with your BFRA :) Lloydpick 23:05, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Lloydpick :) thanks for the operation of CounterVandalismBot. Is it possible to make a very small change to the warning message text: At the moment it is in the order text <!-- ID: X --> Thank you. --~~~~ <!-- Template:uw-vandalismX --> Could you please change it to text <!-- ID: X --> <!-- Template:uw-vandalismX --> --~~~~ (with the 'Thank you' anywhere) for better compatibility with my and other's script, as when subst-ing uw-messages the second sequence is used? Thanks, the bots still in its trial period at the moment, so making changes is nice and easy :) Sure I have adjusted the warning text, you can see an example of the new one in my Sandbox. CounterVandalismBot

I was checking recent changes when I noticed a new anti-vandalism bot reverting changes. Good work on it :) If you don't mind, can you change a few things in the code?

• I noticed that whenever the bot warns, it always places the "Vandalism to pagetitile" header. Can you change it so it only places this if it is the first warning issued. Also, can the header title be changed to the current month and year so warnings can be better organized? It just gets confusing like in here: User_talk:70.133.67.139

• I also noticed that the bot doesn't seem to report vandals that have been warned with a lv4 warning to WP:AIV? [1]

Yeah, currently it uses its own warning set, I might change this when I get some spare time over the next week or so.

With the reporting to AIV, it's not that I don't have faith in my bot, but I believe that reporting to AIV should be done by a human rather than a bot that can make mistakes.

Minor comment on this -- the bot reports, but doesn't block -- that's why there's a separate section for bot reports, and why the admins look at the user's edits before they block. Sometimes only the bot is aware of the vandal -- so I personally think that adding a reporting feature would be harmless, as there is admin oversight on that. Gscshoyru 23:18, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Is the code available for this bot? What platform/lang? Does it depend on the API being in place? I'm involved in helping a couple of small (non WMF) wikis that could use some vandalism defense and am trying to find possible bots or automation to help. This bot runs on windows, and is coded in Visual C# with a mySQL database backend. It does depend on the API being in place. Currently this bot is closed code. It has been coded for Wikipedia specifically, and at a guess being used elsewhere may cause more false positives within the scoring system. Lloydpick 15:40, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Wikipedia Vandalism Watch.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Wikipedia Vandalism Watch.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Cloning your bot

I have no programming ability outside Turing, so I can't write any code worth using. I may be interested in cloning your bot though. What would I need to have to do that? – Mike.lifeguard | ^talk 23:21, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Currently the bot requires any Windows XP/2000 system to run with a mySQL 5.0 database on the same machine. However it is completely unconfigurable without re-compiling, and on top of that the code base is currently closed. I'm also making changes to it daily to improve its detection, so cloning would only end up with an out of date bot unfortunately. Maybe once I have let the code mature a little then I might consider opening up the source to 3rd party :) Lloydpick 23:42, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

bot warning format

Bot error

Hey there. I think your Counter Vandalism Bot has encountered some kind of error that is causing it to edit whilst logged out, and also not warn any users. This was causing a few issues, like ClueBot reverting your bot because it doesn't recognise it when logged out. As such, I've blocked the IP for 24 hours (with autoblock disabled of course).
