Hi Powers, I appreciated the note. If this concomitance means anything I'm sure it is that we make fine Wikipedians, being keepers of the peace and all. Really though, I came across the article from CollegeHumor, and considering some of the college-aged people I know... well, suffice to say that I expected worse. I'm just waiting for the link to be archived on CollegeHumor so that we can nominate it for deletion without interference (unless of course someone could prove to me that it wasn't a joke?). Evils of Atheism

It's about damn time somebody taught atheists their own medicine, and before you ask, I do not generalize, I think there's a cultural distinction between atheism and nonbelievers. Atheists tend to be enraged over religion of any kind, and spend a lot of time elevating Darwin and bemoaning the Crusades. Nonbelievers in general - say, someone who's raised a Christian, believes the Bible is an allegory, and only attends church for a funeral or perhaps at Christmastime - tend to adopt a "Whatever gets you through the night" philosophy and be quiet on matters of faith. It's sort of like the difference between a devout vegetarian and someone who hates the taste of meat. Atheists are proud of their hate. It is something that they love devoutly and use it to hate christians. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GreekWarrior (talk • contribs) .

Drakeguy-I think you're missing the point of why so many people have become atheists and non-believers. I personally get turned off organized religion when I have seen it so consistently misused. It's been used to justify the attacks on innocent children(Beslan), or by others to attack minority groups for political gain (gays in the US) with little evidence to back up ANY of the accusations, and still by others to initiate ethnic cleansing and civil war (Bosnia and Iraq).

And what about Darwin? Darwin, when he made the theory, was not out to "get" Christianity and the story of Genesis. He simply was confronted with evidence that suggested an interesting pattern in the history of life on earth. You can fume all you want, but the simple fact of the matter is that you can now trace the evolution of humanity throughout DNA extracted from the bones of our ancestors. And not just our species, but many others as well. Just this past week they found a fossil that provides us with conclusive evidence of a link between fish and amphibians when scientists found a half-fish/half-amphibian in the Canadian Arctic on Baffin Island. It was until recently, a missing link creationists seized upon to attack evolution's "incomplete" record.

Finally, let's get to this issue of hate and who's oppressing whom more. I can find numerous examples of religion attacking science and other "undesirables"(Copernicus for suggesting the earth was round-got jailed, the Spanish Inquisition, the Scopes Monkey Trial(Scopes was on trial for teaching evolution, a banned subject in the state of Tennessee), the numerous attacks upon evolution since Darwin proposed it(including today's debate about putting intelligent design in schools that was forced upon the nation by a very reactive Pennsylvania school board), and religious conservatives attacking scientists' character after producing studies showing no significant difference being raised by gay parents than straight parents (mentally and physically). I don't know about atheists hating religion, as my roommate is atheist and really could not care less, but it would appear historically that religion, not science, has been the aggressor when beliefs were called into question by scientific evidence. The only conflict I can find that pitted science in any fashion(or the state in general) against religion was the French Revolution, during which the Catholic Church, due to its elitist economic goals in France, found itself temporarily banned.

Finally I'd like to say that I do not hate religion. I was baptized in the Lutheran Church and was raised in a fairly Christian household. My issue with your "atheists hate believers" article here is that you do not mention at all, just how many times the believers oppress, hate, or kill the atheists. Or the "infidel" believers of other religions or beliefs for that manner. Take the Beslan school hostage crisis, the harsh reaction to the "muslim takeover" of American ports, the current Shia-Sunni bloodbath in Iraq, Al-Queda declaring war on the "infidel crusaders" worldwide, the Taliban destroying "infidel" Buddhist statues in Afghanistan while praising god, the French Muslim riots, or the Nazis(a religious cult movement according to the History Channel) killing the Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, and Poles.

Much like Dan Brown has said, it's amazing how the body count always tends to go higher when there are more "true believers". Parts of organized religion have always been involved in terrible acts against others, suppresses rival groups, and rewrites history to its liking. Thus Mary Magdalene went from being Jesus' chief disciple to being a prostitute, and her Gospel was never included in the Holy Bible(yes, she wrote one-check out the Gnostic Gospels). And yes, organized religion does great things many times for the less fortunate, but like I said, all it takes are a few bad apples to ruin the reputation of everyone involved. Until organized religion is actually used to help people, not gain power for religious leaders, and not used to attack others, I will remain fairly suspicious of certain members of it. But there is one notable exception I have found going through the history books: Buddhism. I give Buddhism top marks for peacefulness as there has never been a holy war or oppression of a people by another because of it. In fact, I cannot even find a single instance of Buddhism even going after science or a scientific theory. Buddhism transcends scientific theory, and that's a beautiful and rare thing in this world.

Religion and atheism can coexist, but it takes both sides to hold the peace. The same goes for science and religion. My roommate respects the views of religious conservatives...my question is why you find it necessary to misrepresent the views of many atheists? It is a free country after all-my roommate has never expressed hate for you, and many others like him have not. Trust me, they're not out to get you and the 80 other percent of North Americans who happen to be Christian. Drakeguy 06:14, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Categories for deletion

Why did you only list Category:People who worked with Ralph Bakshi for deletion, and not Category:People who worked with David Lynch? How is one superior to the other? If neither of which is notable, why not try to get both of them deleted? (Ibaranoff24 03:30, 7 March 2006 (UTC))

Daystar (hacker culture)

Your comment on removing the prod was "it's been around for ages." Can you provide a reference? A search of daystar slang on Google only turns up Wiktionary. A search of daystar hacker only turns up Wikipedia mirrors as relevant hits. Daystar is also a company so it could be overwhelmed by that, but I couldn't find a reference. I'll agree the term "day star" has been used for quite a long time, but I see no evidence that it's part of hacker culture. Day star, in common usage, is a reference to Venus (also called the morning star and evening star). Thanks. -- JLaTondre 13:32, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I can't find any older references, but its usage in the above links seems to indicate it was at least recognizable if not in widespread use by the year 2000. "Evil DayStar" and "The rumors of the Daystar are true!" appear to be the most common constructions. Powers 14:27, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, only 329 Google hits for "evil Daystar" and 316 for "rumors of the Daystar are true" (though that phrase could easily vary in wording). Not enough to warrant the creation of an article in my opinion, but since it already exists, enough that I won't argue for its deletion. Paul Bunyan

I thought someone might have some doubts about it. I named Paul Bunyan (lumberjack) because he was most famous for being the mythical lumberjack, of course. Of course, your solution might have been more pratical for the fix of one redirect, but what if those redirects do get filled? The disambiguation page would have been created eventually. You may have not noticed yet, but I did just add some blue links into the disambiguation page. They are Paul Bunyan Trophy and Paul Bunyan's Axe. And I think it safe to assume anything named Paul Bunyan will probably be named after the lumberjack anyways. Well, I'll see if I get anymore complaints and if I do, I'll probably revert it to the previous versions. Moe ε 03:29, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Blue Cross Arena

I thought that picture was okay because it had the logo on that part of the building. But yeah it probably isn't good because its more than just the logo. Can it be a zoomed in picture of that do you think? I couldn't find a picture of the logo by itself.

re: DRV for myg0t

Several days ago, you recommended undeleting the article for myg0t. In your comment, you said that you believed the second deletion nomination had been closed in error and that consensus had not been reached. Since your comment, I discovered that the second AFD discussion in question had been vandalized by an anon user between the closure of the discussion and the start of the deletion review. The vandalism obscured several valid comments. Could I ask you to return to the DRV discussion, review the unvandalized version of the AFD discussion and affirm whether or not you still believe the discussion was improperly closed? Thanks. Thanks for fixing that. Christian Naturism cleanup - Thanks

Thanks for cleaning up the "Christian Naturism" wiki.

As you can probably tell, I am still new to all of this and so I was having trouble figuring out how to properly format the quotations area.

I have a ton more to add, including Biblical verses used to support Christian Naturism.

I am dabating wheter they should be on the same page or on another page and if so wht it should be called.

Spring holiday

I accept your apology, as "User:142.176.56.175" is most definitely not me, though yes I do admit it seems suspicious, what can I do? Also, I wish you would review User:Thumbelina's edits and see that they are not offering any type of NPOV in comparison to the original state of the page, they are simply ignoring the cited facts that are agreed apon as valid by me and other users who have visited Spring holiday's talk page. I can assure you that the version prior to Thumbelina's rude intrusion is as NPOV as possible, and I'm sure you won't find any POV, and every one of my claims has extensive in-text citations. Thumbelina also removed an agreed apon consensus between myself and User:AYArktos, which holds that there should be extensive assurance that these terms are only used in North America. Tuba

Only a series of books written in Welsh in my University Library, plus a fair amount of urban legends;) Perhaps it's NN, but I thought it deserved a mention here rather than have an entire page or even a section in another page. There are posters for sale in the university print shop of them, they're used in stories to illustrate the point that you never know what happens unless you were actually there - long story. This, of course, demonstrates the lack of care with which Amalas "investigated" this matter; I had already edited the article to include a link to "collegiate secret society". The change is now a matter of the unargued insistence that the link should be in the first sentence of the summary.

I notice that you're also insisting on reverting to the decription of the students' writing style as "unique"; what are your grounds for that? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:25, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I know that it has been stated that the link should be in the first sentence, but not argued. My reason for placing it where I have is that it fits better there; the summary explains that the society's "secret" status was a later development, and I therefore placed the information where that change was described.

My insistence is, I admit, partly a matter of deep irritation at the person or persons who edit the article in line with their own interests and points of view, who attack me personally, and who betray their ignorance of Wikipedia by insisting that only those who have personal knowledge of the subject should edit the article. The farce of the mediation didn't help (an editor who has been here for two months glanced at the issue rather carelessly and issued a verdict, failing to mediate in any sense of that word).

I have no wish to fall out with a fellow clarinettist, though, and I hope that our interactions can remain amicable even in disagreement. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:36, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Star Wars Galaxies

First of all, if you read the forums the fact that all players ar refering to publish 29 as the CU3 indicates that it is indeed a major update. Secondly, if you were still playing the game and had legitamite background knowladge of the material in context, you would know that too. Have you played it on TC2 tho? It is a whole new system. They might not say so on the forums but in actuallity the system is basically the CU, with the FPS targeting system. The way the specials fire with the default attack funtions almost exactly as it did during the CU, exept that the default attack elicits only a cooldown timer on itself, and not all other specials. The Dev report on the changes is far understated. As for the skills being changed in the other 2, isent this the publish that introduces profession differentiation. Rekov 03:03, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

It seems to me that the series of changes since the Summits would, if all jammed together, be a significant change to the game. Its not a specific publish that is doing it, but rather publishes 29 - 33. I think something should be said about it somewhere, maybe when they are done with them.

CONCACAF Champions League

Powers, knowing you to be the ultra wikipedian around here, I'd like to ask if you'd seen my post on the MLS discussion page regarding the new "CONCACAF Champions League" editing. I haven't started putting it in yet, and was waiting on a more official source than Soccer America. Could you check out the link and tell me what you think? By the way, Rekov made the same mistake I did when he posted on my page about that little GreekWarrior tirade. Oh well, at least I asked. Powers, the Concacaf acronym stands for the Confederation of North, Central And Carribean America Football. If your boys (Rochester Raging Rhino's) were granted an MLS franchise, this would be a contest they might see if they finished in the top 4 of MLS. Well, hopefully Rochester gets that MLS franchise they've been talking about sometime. Your team could be the MLS' 14th or so franchise, or maybe be the finishing expansion franchise of 16 total expected by 2010. PA 666

I moved it because that is the term used by PennDOT (more often its abbreviation PA Route 666). State Route 666 (note no Pennsylvania before) is also used, but in some cases the numbers don't match - Interstate 380 is State Route 380, while Pennsylvania Route 380 is actually State Route 400. As for the redirects, the hope is that eventually those - at least US 6 - will be their own articles, similar to for instance U.S. Route 30 in Pennsylvania (which still needs work/expansion). --SPUI (T - C) 12:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Contrabass clarinet

It's not a source you can easily check, which does indeed give me some qualms about mentioning it, but it's been discussed, and photos of it have been posted, on the contrabass mailing list (http://www.contrabass.com/pages/list.html). That page claims there is an archive but it doesn't seem to include anything recent. As for the prototype's significance, it is described by list members who've played it as better, fuller sounding than previous cbcls, and the first with full Boehm keywork. They sound quite excited about it.

If that's not good enough for Wikipedia, and I can well imagine it might not, please feel free to remove mention from the contrabass clarinet article and/or those for Benedikt Eppelsheim and clarinet makers. (The Eppelsheim article also has mention of a new contrabass sax which, like the contrabass clarinet, is not mentioned on the Eppelsheim web site and for which, again, the only source I know of is the contrabass mailing list.) If on the other hand it just needs some citation, perhaps you can suggest something appropriate. Thanks. -- Rsholmes 04:45, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Regarding your recent edit, I think the anonymous user meant "Hilary Duff's mother", not "Lizzie's mother", which explains why it would have been derailed (because clearly, as you said, a fictional character cannot derail a film). I think it's another example of a person misusing an actress's character's name for the actress herself. Kid in King Arthur's Court

Hi there! I'm part of a project which is using an automated program to find article which include info about both a film and its source material, so we can consider splitting the articles into their separate components. The comment about a split is there as a sign to the program to skip that article, as the film article is already separate from the book article. Academy

Lt Powers, Sir,

I am not sure how else to message you, so I am editing your user page. I noticed that you changed the "never" back to "rarely" on the USAFA page. I believe never is the only thing strong enough, as it is NEVER called Colorado Springs. I KNOW that you wikipedia types like to sound all official and intelligent when writing these articles. But saying rarely is misleading to the reader. Now when someone reads the article they will think that it is sometimes appropriate to call the Academy "Colorado Springs." When in fact if they start calling it that the ONLY people who will know what in the world they are talking about are other MISINFORMED wikipedia readers. You'll notice as you look through the history of the Academy's article that this never/really controversy has been a battle ground for sometime. When me and my friends (all academy grads) first started trying to make the correction we were continually denied by a few certain individuals who thought they knew more about it than we did (I think they saw the Annapolis movie). Our opposing points of view nonwithstanding, I would like to invite you on over to Christmastime greetings and get your opinion and perhaps some additions/edits. I'll have you know that—much as you may not have thought—I don't want to go around creating articles and keeping them the exact same as my initial incarnation, if you compare the first edit to the most recent edit of Spring holiday, you'll see alot of changes were made. So, in an attempt to revert vandalism on Nick Griffin today, i accidentally reverted Tawkerbot2's revert of said vandalism (because I'd refreshed the page before doing so to get popups to kick in, and didn't notice the new entry in history). Obviously this was a mistake, which Tawkerbot2 immediately corrected, leaving a note on my talk page, which I deleted because I don't need it there. And you then reverted my deletion from my own talk page, telling me not to remove valid warnings from talk pages. List reversion

Hi - you reverted my edit to Star Trek role-playing game (FASA), in which I had removed the lists of books which dominate that article. Your edit summary states "This is no less encyclopedic than a discography or filmography, IMO.", which I don't particularly disagree with. I'd like to point out two things:

1. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (lists of works) was not made policy - discographies and filmographies are not necessarily considered encyclopedic. My feeling is that such lists are worthwhile if they list independently notable entities which a user might read more on (that is, they have their own articles), but not if they simply list things for the sake of listing them. I'd say the list of sourcebooks is the second sort.
2. The WikiProject Role-playing games recommended style recommends against lists of sourcebooks.

However, the WP:RPG guidance was included because no-one objected, rather than because it had overwhelming support. I would value your opinion at the style talk page, so we can get a clearer consensus on what is and isn't encyclopedic in these circumstances. Percy Snoodle 17:41, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Removing pictures =

I had a nice shot of the Circus fleas removed because of "quality" but because there is no high quality press shot, you lose the information. That shot of the vans is very helpful in establishing the ID of the first and 2nd vans which is up to question. Perhaps a gallery would be a better place to stash this. Far as I know, a low-res screen capture is OK for this purpose.

I am sorry if you do not like my reasons for supporting an article, but we are all free to have our opinions. The page you keep referring to is very vague and says nothing about demanding Wikipedians to give only certain reasons for supporting articles for FA status. Specifically, it states "Discussion, rather than unilateral action, is the preferred means of changing policies, and the preferred mechanism for demonstrating the problem with policies. This means that an individual who opposes the state of a current rule or policy should not attempt to create in Wikipedia itself proof that the rule does not work." All I am doing is "discussing" and I demand you show where I am conducting "unilateral action". If you continue to call me a "disrupter" I will have to report you for harrassment. Perhaps I should not have added the comment regarding the role of the FA director and should have put abstained rather than support (I already changed it on one and will be doing it to the others tonight when I get the chance), but the rest of the comments are valid and not a disruption of any kind. I have been told that the standards for FA promotion are "fluid" and will not be set. Since you may have missed my response, I am reproducing it here as a respectful courtesy. If you have seen it and feel this cluters your talk page, feel free to delete it.

Some of the sources are questionable, notably Overlawyered.com. A quick example. Overlawyered promotes a study design to show that the tort system is bad for the economy, the infamous Tillinghast Towers Perrin study. They don't tell you TTP is a conglomerate which business is insurance in one form (reinsurance) or another (consulting to insurance companies). It is an interested party. The last time I checked, Overlawyerd.com left this little detail out. Another fact left out, is TTP will not disclose its sources and methods behind the study's conclusion making it impossible to verify. Not exactly reputable science. Again: the propieter is from the Manhattan Institute. The Manhattan Institute is a conservative think tank (nothing wrong with that) that accepts money from large corporations and coincidentally publishes viewpoint articles consistent with the agenda of those corporations. Their practice is legal, but is it ethical and does it make the reader more or less likely to believe it is neutral? Most people, if they answer that honestly would say no. I am not a PI lawyer BTW. The real issue is notablitity. His ads are infamous in Rochester perhaps, but not world wide. Unless that is the author's intention- to show the entire world Shapiro is/was sleazy. Unfortunately, it is just run of the mill sleaze, as I tried to point out. I actually watched the ads on the website that has archived them. Believe it or not, I've seen similar from different lawyers in different markets. Is deleting Shapiro important, I think so. Otherwise in fairness I can think of a lot of other professionals with sleazy annoying misleading ads. To be notable, you would have to demonstrate that Shaprio was the first lawyer with sleazy annoying loud ads that make unverifiable claims and who were cited by their bars. You would have to show he was the first to lose a malpractice case. Neither is the case. If anyone is includable regardless of notability, what standards are there?

Aw, thank you Gfwesq! And you are mine! It is interesting that some believe we do not have the right to independently vote on WIkipedia, yet nobody would question our right to vote in any election. With the rationale of some here (not Powers, I will note), then one could exclude husband and wife, sister and brother, etc. This, of course, is ludicrous. And in this instance, a total of 13 people (11 if one excludes Gfwesq and me) voted to delete this article. Several added tags of 'speedy delete', which is appropriate, and finally was done. And Powers, I do not disagree with you that this lawyer's ads were over the top and he should have been censured (which I guess he was, by the state bar). My only quibble is that he is not notable, and there was no way to make the article NPOV, since its only purpose was to show how he was sleazy - if he had been notable (even infamous) outside his locale, then I'd say leave the article. It is colorful, at the least. However, he is not infamous, and sadly there are all too many run-of-the-mill lawyers who act this way. Fortunately, there are state bars that do address this. I object to the 'Overlawyered' site as a reference, because its only aim is to disparage lawyers, anywhere it can find them. Wikipedia is not 'Overlawyered' and I hope will never be. And I will add that I still think the law is an honorable profession, or I would not have gone to law school after a career in engineering.
