Foner article

edit

Luath - welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your work on the Eric Foner article. You've added many good contributions here, however some of the changes you are making are unconventional. I restored a couple of the things you deleted as they are indeed sourced in existing links at the bottom of the article. Also, please understand that broad proclamations such as "no evidence for such a misattribution can be located" as a basis to delete are not always appropriate, as often times evidence does indeed exist for things you've deleted (e.g. Foner's marxist views, his support for Robeson etc.). Simply being unable to find something on google or the internet is insufficient as a basis for deletion. You should take a moment to also review wikipedia policies such as WP:V and WP:CITE, which indicate that instead of deleting something you believe is unsupported outright, you should first post a message about it on the talk page. This gives other readers a chance to either (a) direct you to the source in case you missed it, such as the links at the end of the article, or (b) seek out and find a source if one is believed to be lacking. This is important because it helps avoid revert wars and also generally improves the sourcing of the article when needed. Please be mindful of these concerns in your future edits, & once again welcome and thank you for your contributions. Rangerdude 06:19, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Dear Erich, Thank you very much for reviewing my submission on noted dance critic and Barnard professor of dance Lynn Garafola. I appreciate it very much. I do believe that Garafola meets Wikipedia's guidelines for academics which are, of course, detailed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria:

The person's research has made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources. (Yes. See links to NY Times articles and other reliable third party sources, not to mention the fact that she is a tenured full professor at one of the country's top colleges, and one of the few professors of dance history in the world.)

Academics/professors meeting any one of the following conditions, as substantiated through reliable sources, are notable. Academics/professors meeting none of these conditions may still be notable if they meet the conditions of WP:Notability or other notability criteria, and the merits of an article on the academic/professor will depend largely on the extent to which it is verifiable.

The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level. (Yes. See article entry.)

The person is or has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g. a National Academy of Sciences or the Royal Society) or a Fellow of a major scholarly society for which that is a highly selective honor (e.g. the IEEE). (Yes. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, perhaps the country's most prestigious academic organization.)

The person's academic work has made a significant impact in the area of higher education, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions. (Yes)

The person holds or has held a named chair appointment or "Distinguished Professor" appointment at a major institution of higher education and research.

The person has held a major highest-level elected or appointed academic post at a major academic institution or major academic society.

The person has made substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity. (Yes. See article entry, in particular the major public exhibitions she has organized).

The person is or has been the head or chief editor of a major well-established academic journal in their subject area.

The person is in a field of literature (e.g writer or poet) or the fine arts (e.g. musician, composer, artist), and meets the standards for notability in that art, such as WP:CREATIVE or WP:MUSIC.

I have resubmitted the article. Many thanks for your continued consideration.

Best,

Luath
