Usually if you revert a vandalism you could just type 'rv' as edit summary, and mark the edit as minor. Yes, this is the proper way of communicating with somebody, given the nice orange bar that informs you of new messages, most of the user will reply at your talk page to what you post on theirs and the other way around, however some users (especially /very/ active users who receive a huge number of messages) will reply on their talk page.
