1. Is it recommended to request edit help?

2. Where is the name of my article? My user page only has my name on it. The first text that appears is the name of the author who is the subject of the article. Is that de facto the name of the article?

3. As this is an important move, will you help me execute the move or must I do it alone? Thanks very much

It is better to work on articles in user subpages, and to keep your user page for a bit of info about yourself (if you wish), and 'handy links'. I have moved the proposed article to User:Lumenlitt/James Thackara, and I edited your user page, adding links to some other test pages - I wrote this;

The 'test' pages are currently red links, because they don't exist; you can create those, or edit your user page and add more. I hope this makes sense; have a look at User:Lumenlitt now - you can always access that page by clicking your username at the top-right-ish, small letters.

I have reformatted the article a bit; you don't need to manually create a 'table of contents', because it is an automatic function. Sections are made by putting e.g. == Works == and, for a subsection, === ===America’s Children===. Any page with 4 or more sections automatically gets a 'table of contents'.

I will, now, work on the page a little - other fix-ups; you'll be able to see what I've done by looking at the page history (this), and by clicking on (prev) alongside the edits, you'll see what I change.

It's fine; you can go ahead and edit it. There are a number of things to address; I'll have to come back to this a little later (in a few hours) - I'd like to add detail to the references, but it will be much easier to 'show you what I mean' later, than to try and explain.

Question - is this an autobiography, ie is it you? if so, you need to read WP:AUTO (if you haven't).

I also recommend reading WP:BIO.

Last first. The reference in the first footnote is to the book, not the website. I had trouble finding anything with only the book on it.

This is not an autobiography. It is a biography of the author James Thackara . I will read bio but can you advise if I have made any egregious errors?

OK - I'm working on improving the references - that's the first thing. I can't say much more about it until I can sort those out, and see where the facts are coming from. I'm adding citation templates - I'll do a few more; have a look at user:chzz/help/refs to see how they work. Things like that ref 1 need to give details of the actual book they cite, you see, rather than just a URL to an abstract - because the latter is just a 'convenience link', and not the actual thing used to verify the facts.

OK - I have now added information to quite a few of the references - could you please look at the others. References really are the most critical part of an article, because the reader should be able to 'check the facts'. A reference to an online copy of an article is not enough; we need to know the title, publisher, date, etc. For some of the references, I can't find this information - for example, there is a reference to http://www.signonsandiego.com/ but it doesn't indicate which article, and I can't find it there by searching on the name. The ref to speakmag.com is similar - which issue, etc? Other references, such as Velga, Gema, Thackara: “El hombre tiene el don de reinventarse y el defecto do no lagrarlo” Diarios Martes, 19 junio 2001 - I don't know what this is; is it a book, a magazine? If I wanted to check it, I need to know the publisher or something.

There are also lots of facts in the article that are unreferenced, and anything lacking a reliable source can be removed. Therefore, if it goes live at the moment, it will start to look like this;

James Thackara was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 7, 1944 to the Argentinean James Justin Thackara and Ellen Louise Schmid of Greenville, Texas. His mother’s Swiss father, Theodore Schmid, ran a cotton dealership on Shanghai’s Bund from 1921 to 1937 and her formative years thus embraced the Warlord and Kuomintang eras, and China's Long March.

We're especially careful with biographic articles, and it really is likely that info lacking sources will be removed; that might actually mean reducing the length of the article, if there are no such sources available for some of the information presented.

The other concern is that it does not maintain a neutral point-of-view, and some of it seems to be [WP:OR|original research]] - for example, Thackara began the punishing search for his voice and subject, the book created the aesthetic landscape for his later work, He became more reclusive though he increasingly pursued questions of political action - I am not convinced that these are actual facts that can be verified.

An addition, the article currently lacks a lead section, which in Wikipedia is called a WP:LEDE - please read that link; a clear, consise summary of the whole article at the beginning, to give context, is very important. Oddly enough, the lede itself does not need references - because all things mentioned in it should be elaborated within the body of the article.

Thank you for your thoroughness. I have some questions which I hope will address some of the issues your raise. Can I ask if I can cite conversations with the author's editor, his still living mother, and classmates of his at Harvard that I knew all of whom I know.

Also, when inserting all details about references, do I put them into the text or in the list of references? Alternatively do I enter the details AND the link in the text.

Can I cite the author's Harverd College Class of 1967 Twenty Fith Report which has a very thorough treatment of sections which are referred to here. I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks

Could you please clarify what problem you are having? Perhaps a step-by-step walkthrough of what you have done and when the problem occurs. That would help me give more thorough advice.

I can advise that foreign language sources are perfectly acceptable. English is preferred, of course, but if the reference only exists in a foreign language there is no problem with that. Also, print-only sources are also OK, as long as they can be verified. So, for example, another user could find it in a bookstore or library, etc.

Finally, on a side note, please don't use the {{adminhelp}} template for questions such as these. General questions on using Wikipedia can be answered by any knowledgeable editor, so please use {{helpme}} in future.

This is a new development and I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Avraham blocked me for being abusive (which I have queried). Currently your article mixes use of {{citation}} and {{cite ...}} templates (such as {{cite book}}). I recall hearing that the two types should not be used in the same article, but it was never explained to me why this was. I'm guessing that the problems you are having are the explanation, so would recommend converting your {{citation}} templates to {{cite ...}} or vice versa. Hello, thanks. I'ved changed all refs to be of Citation style. I believe this article is ready to be added to the wiki. Please, is it too much to ask that it be looked over before hand to chekc that it complies with wiki regulations.

There are two issues still of concern. 1. References from 34 to the end are not listed in list of references even though they are in the text. 2. Avraham has apparently barred me for "abusive" usage of my id. I have queried him on this have no answer and the barring still occasionally appears when I log in. I have cleaned up your references and fixed the problem that was causing references 35-43 to not display. Please be consistent with date style; you had about five different styles mixed together:-) I think the article is ready to be moved (do not cut and paste) to the mainspace to the extent that it is highly unlikely to be speedily deleted. However, it has a very large problem in my opinion with neutral point of view. It sounds like an advocacy piece ("this author is so great and here's why") rather than treating him with the neutrality we require of encyclopedic entries. It's full of peacock language and overwrought in many places. Regarding being blocked, your IP address may have been caught in an autoblock but your account has never been blocked. Moving Article

This article is ready to be moved. When I entered the move menu, I read that it was assumed that the article had no subpages when in fact it is itself a subpage. Have I misunderstood? Hello, Today when I checked in, I discovered that my revision history, which up to now has recorded changes made until November 17, has been truncated and only includes changes up to October 25. I would guess you were looking at the wrong page: Special:Contributions/Lumenlitt shows your latest contributions, and at the time of writing the latest one was this edit to James Thackara, about twenty-five minutes ago. You will see there are links there to show older revisions than the 50 listed, and clicking that link twice takes you to here, which currently goes up to October 25. user name change

Hello, Quite a while back, I changed my user name from my own name to the user name I have now. It was indeed to avoid having messages directed my attention. Now however, I find that on google and yahoo searches, my name appears as an entry as user, along with the article I created. This may be the result of an algorithm but it is of most concern and excatly the opposite to what was intended. Please can you advise me?
