History books
Category:British history books is for 'books about British history'. Category:American history books which you have created seems to be 'American books about history' or even 'History books by American authors'. This will lead to confusion: I don't expect to find the Armada in 'American history'. Occuli (talk) 21:05, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- To me it leads to less confusion because I find the grammar of "American(or British) history books" to be ambiguous as to whether the adjective is on books themselves, or the content of the books. Are the history books American/British, or is the history contained within the books American/British? So to me specifying categories such as "History books about America/the United Kingdom" for history books about American/British history and leaving "American/British history books" as history books that are American/British satisfactorily distinguishes between the two rather than having one catch-all category for history books about something that is X and history books that are X. To me this seems more appropriate as we are trying to create categories for the articles about the books themselves, not about the subjects the books refer to, so the categorical adjectives should apply to the classification of the subject of articles, which is the book, rather than the classification of the material the book is on. Also, this is keeping in line with the precedent set further upstream in the categorical chain in having both Category:Books by country and Category:Books about countries. Category:United States history book stubs
An editor objected to your proposal to speedily rename Category:United States history book stubs to Category:History book about the United States stubs on the grounds that changes to stub categories should be made through Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. I have removed the listing from the speedy renaming page, but you are free to re-nominate the category at Stub types for deletion. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help in any way. Fair use rationale for File:Ukraine- A History cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ukraine- A History cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. File source problem with File:Ukraine- A History cover.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Ukraine- A History cover.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:24, 4 May 2011 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 23:24, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, a simple CFD is the best way to go. There's always the exception of G7, so any category that nobody else has edited is safe: however, be sure to tag it as G7. Nyttend (talk) 04:16, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

CRHP
Hello. Thanks for your note. The CRHP is a great initiative, and it's a great source. Of course WLM used CRHP -- as a source. It's the one, semi-complete list of historic sites in this country that we have. We use it all the time on Wikimedia Commons, because it serves as a great reference. But at Commons we never categorize images based on the CRHP (we categorize images by their actual notable and relevant characteristics), and here on Wikipedia we should not be misleadingly referring to it as some sort of historic recognition. Referring to it in a manner that suggests it confers some sort of status is plainly incorrect and tremendously misleading. In of of itself it confers absolutely no historic status or notability. None whatsoever. It's an online directory. A great and useful directory, but a directory nonetheless. It's a secondary source like Wikipedia. The CRHP is a means of consolidating disparate information from across the the country in one place, which is awesome, but we should not be confusing the means with the information. Saying that something is on the CRHP is like saying in the Stephen Harper article that Harper is important because he is listed in the Parliamentary phone book. Doing so would completely miss the point. Harper is notable because he is PM and MP for Calgary Southwest. The Parliamentary directory is a reflection of that, not in and of itself a separate distinction. Even though there are few Canadians privileged enough to be included in the directory of Parliamentarians.
A lot of the confusion lies in the fact that the CRHP is called a "register" like the NRHP is the U.S. (which is an actual heritage register in the traditional sense of the term, inclusion on which does confer historic status). Nothing is ever officially "listed" on the CRHP, or named to the CRHP. There is no site in Canada that has ever gone through an official process to be added to the CRHP. It's a database of sites that have gone through other actual official processes to become historically significant. And the CRHP is, by the way, quite incomplete. For example, there are more than a hundred NHSCs that aren't yet included in the CRHP. So, just to name an example, the Bedford Petroglyphs NHSC in Nova Scotia are not included in the CRHP. But the Osgoode Hall NHSC in Toronto is. If CRHP did actually confer historic status, then the Bedford Petroglyphs would have less status than Osgoode Hall, which is rubbish because the two sites are equally NHSCs. But a reader would be mislead into thinking Osgoode Hall had some national heritage status that the Bedford Petroglyphs did not.
Don't get me wrong. I think CRHP is wonderful, and I am on it several times a week, every week. I love it. It's one of the best things that ever happened to Canada-related Wikipedia articles. But it is a source, not a status.--Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- As an aside, what I find really troubling about these references to CRHP in articles (always added in good faith, mind you), is that inevitably people never actually mention the actual historic designations that got the buildings or sites included on the CRHP in the first place. Talk about missing the forest for the trees (although mentioning both the CRHP and the actual historic designation is also confusing and mixing apples/oranges). The articles are so much poorer for it. Kind of like of saying William Gladstone has his own article in the Encyclopedia Britannica, but failing to mention that he served as British PM four times. Rant over. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:19, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
