editHi and welcome to wikipedia!
You are certianly right that Abkhazia and SO want to secede from Georgia - that's why they fought their wars in 1992-1993 and 1991-1992 respectively. I'm not sure what do you mean by "not going well". Georgia has been successful enough from the economical point of view in the last few years but this could not lure back Abkhazians and Ossetians. We can't know for sure what Russia (or rather its government) genuinely wants wrt these 2 republics, especially since up to the beginning of this conflict Russia kept claiming it respected Georgia's territorial integrity. However Medvedev recently has made a statement (iirc) basically supporting SO's and Abkhazia's independence.
Georgia often has claimed that these territories aren't really independent but are in fact Russian protectorates. Indeed SO very heavily depends on Russia both economically and militarily (as we have seen). Abkhazia is another case, it's bigger, it has some economic ties with Turkey and can more or less sustain itself. Feel free to ask other questions :)

- To be exact, the hostages are held by SO. I don't know their reasoning (except for what they say themselves) and I don't particularly like this situation either. Alæxis¿question? 04:41, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
