Welcome to the one hundred and ninty second WikiProject Yorkshire monthly newsletter.
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 19,208 last month to 19,275 on 8 April 2024). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 221 is ahead of WP:GM who have 90. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 93 while WP:GM has 65 out of a total number of 5,047 articles.
Currently we have seventy six Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The April 2024 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no nominations on the project talk page.

Range block on corporate web gateway software
Latest comment: 6 months ago3 comments2 people in discussion
Hi,
There is now a block that appears to be a recent addition, on the address range 161.69.0.0/16, that affects even non-anonymous editors. Not sure why I haven't encountered it until today, as the culprit seems to be our company's use of McAfee Web Gateway Cloud Service, which has been deployed for quite awhile, and cannot be turned off by end users on their systems.
Since I use all my "good" computers for work-from-home, I am required to have the software installed on those computers, and again: can't be turned off. So if choose to edit (off the company clock, I hasten to add), I now have to resort to my broken-down, tiny-screened, 5-minute-battery life laptop that does not have WGCS installed.
Yes, this is the classic definition of a first-world problem. But still.
Is there any way to have this ban not affect logged-in users? I'm also curious if this only affects my company (AMD), or if it's endemic to any company deploying WGCS. Regards, NapoliRoma (talk) 01:38, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Elections
This is the month for local elections, Mayoral elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections. There will be a large number of results articles that need creating or updating. There will also be updates to most of the location articles, with changes to the governess sections and infoboxes. Not to mention the people articles for those standing for election.

Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
Looks like he is back with a new ID [8]. If possible please revert and revdel their edits. They also seem to have accepted being sock of User:UserGK23, something which I mentioned here. His edits here are not good faith either, just regular troll business. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:39, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi, you deleted Donovan Slacks as the close of my AFD nomination. I realized that I think it may qualify as the longest hoax in Wikipedia since it, near as I can tell, was always written as if Slacks was a real person and then was modified to be as-if they just happened to make a movie about him (I think that's hoax-y enough?). I'm just asking, if it's available, the date it was originally created and the final byte count of the article? (I don't think that info is available to non-admins.) I doubt showing the article as a subpage there would be useful but that may be my lack of experience there. Thanks! Skynxnex (talk) 13:35, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
Hi. It was created at 18:01, 2 November 2004, and the final byte count (excluding your AFD nomination tag) was 1,478 bytes. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 13:53, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi Malcolmxl5, could you place a block on the 213.253.8.62 IP address? It's been warned up to the 4th level with continued disruption after that, and it's been reported to AIV but sat unnoticed there for nearly 4 hours now. The last block was 1-yr long which expired in Feb this year. Just wondering if it's appropriate to block it now. Thanks! — AP 499D25(talk)13:08, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello, it appears that a very important resource was deleted by mistake

The page that listed all the PS1 games incompatible with the PS2 (very important) seems to have been mistakenly deleted this past december. Can we restore that so everyone in the retro gaming hobby can stop panicking? 68.192.99.108 (talk) 22:50, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
That page, 'List of PlayStation games incompatible with PlayStation 2', won’t be coming back, I’m afraid, but there’s a copy of it on the EverybodyWiki that y'all can use. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 22:10, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

General Election
This month will see the General Election take place with a raft of boundary changes for the constituencies, thanks to the boundary commission review. A lot of work has been done on updating the constituency articles to cover the changes and new articles created for the new constituencies. Once results are in there will be changes to make to all of the candidate articles to show their new status as MP or not as the case may be. There will also be changes to make to the settlement articles to show the new MP and may be change the constituency if the boundary changes affect it.

@DayGG. I am from York in England but that is not relevant on Wikipedia. I see you have blanked the infobox of the article, I will give you a warning for that. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 11:50, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
@DayGG. You are new here and I see that you don’t understand how Wikipedia works. Let me explain. Wikipedia is based on reliable sources. Editors summarise what has been written - by people who do know something about it - in reliable sources.
Your two edits to Tui Manu'a have been to blank the infobox and the leading paragraph. That degrades the article and is widely seen on Wikipedia as vandalism. I recommend that you start talking about improvements to the article on the article talk page. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 12:10, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Would be out of place in a serious thread, but...

Hi Malcolmxl5 - thanks for blocking this IP, who changed images in medical articles to images of video games. Just wanted to give a heads up that this is a long term vandal, and a 31 hour block might not be enough - see here for their previous IP's doing identical vandalism on the same articles:

Yorkshire Day
Happy Yorkshire Day to all project members, official celebrations this year take place in York. May be if anyone is in York could get some pictures of the celebrations would be useful. The York article is about to loose it's GA status as it has been under review and is in need of work. Would be good if members could take time to update and keep it as a Good article.

Turns out intitle: was a bad example - I was thinking of this apparent fact about the search function (that it doesn't search in redirects), but I didn't remember where I saw it (and I'm pretty sure it's not documented, unless it's somewhere obscure). – 2804:F1...14:B176 (talk) 04:47, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Oh well. As it happened, I went straight to JPxG's contributions and worked from there. No faffing around with searches. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 05:25, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
I see I protected the article a couple of weeks ago, I don’t remember that but the title did seem familiar. Anyway, it’s protected for two weeks and the talk page for a couple of days - perhaps the IP person will get the hint. What is their problem anyway? -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 09:04, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
Administrators can now test the temporary accounts feature on test2wiki. This was done to allow cross-wiki testing of temporary accounts, for when temporary accounts switch between projects. The feature was enabled on testwiki a few weeks ago. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. Temporary Accounts is a project to create a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors which are no longer made public. Please share your opinions and questions on the project talk page.
Later this week, editors at wikis that use FlaggedRevs (also known as "Pending Changes") may notice that the indicators at the top of articles have changed. This change makes the system more consistent with the rest of the MediaWiki interface. [17]
Bugs status
Editors who use the 2010 wikitext editor, and use the Character Insert buttons, will no longer experience problems with the buttons adding content into the edit-summary instead of the edit-window. You can read more about that, and 26 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
Please review and vote on Focus Areas, which are groups of wishes that share a problem. Focus Areas were created for the newly reopened Community Wishlist, which is now open year-round for submissions. The first batch of focus areas are specific to moderator workflows, around welcoming newcomers, minimizing repetitive tasks, and prioritizing tasks. Once volunteers have reviewed and voted on focus areas, the Foundation will then review and select focus areas for prioritization.

Projects can be focused on coding or non-coding (design, documentation, translation, research). See the Outreachy page for more details, and a list of past projects since 2013.

No, your fellow admins say blocking the range would be a huge so they had not done any blocking. Blocking smaller ranges would do though if I do detect more. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 15:07, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
It is a big range though one wonder how much editing comes from Egypt other than from Hazem. It looks like a Telecom Egypt mobile network, which may explain why he bounces around so much. Oh well, we'll look for smaller ranges. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 22:00, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
