• I agree; if I can be of any help, try looking for people with these last names: O'Donnell, O'Leary, Sullivan (Sólivan), Murphy (Morfi), Gates (Guéits... Medal of Honor images

I noticed that you were making those changes. To be honest, it took some getting used to, as before they were all uniform and the MOH ribbon matched the infobox well. (It took me quite a while to find an image that didn't have a colored background; and, my thought was not so much to show what the medal looked like, as that can be found on the main article, but rather to bring immediate recognition and due respect — something to set their infoboxes apart from all the rest.) I wish that the rendering of the medal was more like the one that has been on all the USMC recipients — more photographic than line rendering. But that said, your change is historically accurate; and, this is an encyclopedia. So, kudos for all the work. —ERcheck (talk) @ 21:59, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

• I got my start in writing USMC bios when I realized that not every Commandant of the Marine Corps had an article. After creating the missing CMC articles, I completed all of the Sergeants Major of the Marine Corps; then, I found that not all Medal of Honor recipients had articles. That has been my ongoing project — I've created well over 100 of the 180+ articles, and there are more to go (WWI (8) & WWII (82) are complete; 6 more to complete from Korea (42) and 12 more from Vietnam (57)).... Let me think on your offer ... to consider the balance between uniformity and accuracy. For awhile, I was putting the Medal of Honor image next to the citation, but I didn't like the balance, as the length of citations varied so greatly. Perhaps the historical version might fit well in the main article biography, next to the action (not in the intro). What do you think? Don't make any changes yet. I'll ponder on it for a while. Diplomats

I disagree with you and would like the category back on the list. For Puerto Ricans and many other underrepresented Latin groups in the USA, diplomacy is a much more respected job than the many professions listed on this list (clowns, outlaws, security guards, etc..). Especially for a non-independent nation, it shows that Puerto Ricans have the ability to conduct international relations. I am reverting the deletion back and you can start a discussion on the page just as you did for El Grito de Lares, but deleting it and not recognizing this important contribution to world politics would be completely ignorant.

• What contributions to world politics have Cesar Benito Cabrera, Gabriel Guerra-Mondragon, Luis Guinot and Hans Hertell made to world politics that made them notable or famous? O.K., so they were ambassadors to some country but, what were their accomplishments as Ambassadors representing the United States? The only notable former U.S. Ambassadors who were Puerto Rican were Horacio Rivero and Teodoro Moscoso and even they did not gain notability as Ambassadors. I agree that there are too many names in the "list" who do not merit being there and should be taken out and that includes Ambassadors whose only shining moment was to be named Ambassadors but, who have not gained any notability nor fame. Look, I know that you feel very strong about Puerto Rico and you know that I feel the same way, the only thing that I'm trying to say is that we can't continue to add names to the list unless their accomplishments have been notable and have put the name of "Puerto Rico" en alto. Project news Three new task forces have been started: Ancient Near East, Australian military history, and Maritime warfare. New infoboxes for military awards and weapons are nearing completion; any comments on the proposed designs would be extremely welcome! A system of article importance ratings has been introduced to accompany the existing article quality ratings. Help with rating articles would highly appreciated!	From the Coordinators Five months ago, as we were in the midst of coordinator elections, Loopy commented that "I don't think it's unrealistic to imagine this project as one of the most prominent and effective ones around in say, a year's time." Since then: We have grown from just under a hundred members to nearly 300, and appear to be the second largest WikiProject (lagging, curiously enough, behind WP:COMICS). From one small task force, we have grown to include seventeen. Instead of a hand-made worklist of a few hundred articles, we now have one that is quickly approaching 10,000, and forms nearly a third of the overall 1.0 worklist effort. Catalan last names

Tony, you don't offically know me, but I am a member of the Chicano wiki-project and I know you've done a lot of great work on Hispanic topics. I don't know if you follow the project talk page, but I wanted to bring to your attention a page on the wiki español page, [[1]], because I know you've done work on lots of Puerto Rican Marines. I think Sgt. Peralta deserves a page on every language wiki (and that every Hispanic Medal of Honor winner should have a dedicated page as well), and that his removal from the español site would be unfortunate. For what it's worth, although you are semi-retired, I don't think a "Hispanics Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor" page would be too difficult to do if you would want to collaborate on it. Yo soy Nuevo Mexicano, y como los soldados y marineros Puertorriqueños, los Hispanos de Nuevo México han sido buen soldados Americanos, y muy patrióticos. I can think of at least two New Mexican Medal of Honor winners off the top of my head - Daniel Fernandez in Vietnam and Joe Martinez in WWII. Most of the citations are in public domain and the lists of names have already been compiled elsewhere before, and I think there are only like 42 Hispanics to cover. I've heard it said that relative to their numbers that have served, Hispanics have won more Medals of Honor than any other race. Medal of honor recipients

Wow, that was quick! I thought that it was a little sinvergüenza of them to discount mine and Murciélago's votes on es:wikipedia, especially since I took the time to explain my reasons for voting in detail. But without the seniority that I have here, I suppose I can't complain. The new page looks very nice, and will tie in perfectly with an article I hope to write: Military history of Mexican-Americans. I was at a lecture with Sal Castro last month and he knew everything there was to know. It goes back to New Spain's military support of General Washington and the Revolutionaries! Unfortunately, I'm about to start a year-long intensive program to get a teacher's credential and a Master's degree (in education), so I may have to put my wiki-activities on hold, or at least slow them down a bit. We could delete that article or convert to a redirect and just stick with the Category:Puerto Rican people to recognize all Puerto Rican people articles. What do you think? Silvestre S. Herrera article

Tony,

I can only guess what User:Circeus is getting at with his inline comments.

1. As far as the "verbatim" comment, I'm guessing he would expect either " " marks or use of the "blockquote" tag. However, I'm surprised that he did not just make that change himself.
2. "Authorized to wear" — perhaps Circeus is not familiar with how medals are awarded; that "authorized to wear" is an acceptable way to say awarded. (In fact, I think with some medals, it is the phrase more generally heard, such as for the National Defense Service Medal.) Perhaps, the simpler wording "to be awarded" might help. I would find it immediately apparent that the awards came from the respective governments.

So, to each of these points, I've done the following/suggest to you:

1. I've added the official citation page from the U.S. Army to the reference list, and reformatted that citation section.
2. If you are comfortable with the above wording, go ahead and make the change.

I do suggest that you have a chat with Circeus to prevent any misunderstandings from escalating. At this point, it does seem a bit like he is picking out your articles for scrutiny. — ERcheck (talk) 19:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Humbert Roque Versace

Question: Was Versace the first Army POW MOH recipient or the first Army Vietnam War POW recipient. When I read the remarks by President Bush when presenting the Medal of Honor to Versace's family, there seemed to be the qualification of "Southeast Asia". — ERcheck (talk) 03:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Humbert Versace was a POW in Vietnam from 29 October 1963 to 26 September 1965. It is this date range that is cited in his Medal of Honor citation. U.S. Navy Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale (1923-2005), shot down on September 9, 1965 and held prisoner in North Vietnam for over 7 years, was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1976.[2]. In this Army News Service article[3] on Versace's Medal of Honor, the last paragraph reads:

"To date, 245 Medals of Honor have been awarded to service members for actions during the Vietnam War. Of that number, 159 have gone to Army recipients. Including Versace, eight Vietnam POWs received the nation's highest award for valor -- the others earned them for heroic actions that occurred before their captivity."

Stockdale's Medal of Honor citation [ ] give the date and place of action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor as "Hoa Lo prison, Hanoi, North Vietnam, 4 September 1969". So, this date was after Versace's.

See Tibor Rubin. His Medal of Honor citation dates include his captivity; so, there was at least one prior POW MOH recipient.

He served in the U.S. Army. So, that answers the Army question.

Verdad. By the way, I wanted to share something with you. I don't know how much you know about NM history, but like Puerto Rico, New Mexico was a spoil of war (here is a story about my home town, for example Battle of Mora). Reading all these Hispanic MoH stories, couldn't help but think of Yeats's poem, "An Irish Airman Foresees his Death", and admire those fallen heroes for the fact that many of them were fighting for a country that at the time did not see them as worthy to call themselves "American." -Murcielago 16:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Tony, For the military info box awards entry:

"awards – optional – any notable awards or decorations the person received"

For all U.S. Armed Forces personnel, we've been listing the medals in order of precedence for the individual's particular branch of service. We also stop at the Purple Heart Medal, since the guidelines indicate "notable awards". So, for Herrera, on his list of awards, the Mexican government's award would go last on the list. Since there is not yet and article on that award, I would unwikilink it (I hate seeing redlinks). • I'm a bit dismayed/dumbfounded by User:Circeus challenges to the article and the reliability of the information. It's not the first time he has similarly criticized articles on U.S. military articles — in particular, on the now-List of Hispanic Medal of Honor recipients. I hope it is not something personal, but rather a zealous editor. I will assume good faith on his part and hope that with the information provided on the talk page on the reliability of sources and the existence of the medal, he will be satisfied that verifiability has been met. As far as the availability of online sources, Wikipedia does not require online sources. Some countries have more online data available. I don't think it was wrong for people to want the proper name of the award reflected; it was the insinuation that it was fabricated that I couldn't stand. Joseph H. De Castro is listed as being with the Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. I don't know enough about U.S. Army history and Civil War history to know if the individual state infantries were considered part of the U.S. Army. — ERcheck (talk) 22:57, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

The references I've found say he was a Corporal in Company I of the 19th Massachusetts Infantry. I've tried to find info on the the 19th Massachusetts Infantry. So far, I've found no mention of De Castro in their numbers.

• That piece seems to say that they ARE recognized as Army when needed — which would be the case when they were fighting in the Civil War as a part of the Army. Medal of Honor references

I would wait to make any changes to the David B. Barkley article. There are references on the "first". One course of action might be to contact an official agency/group or source of the information. The CMOHS is open M-F until 5 pm (already closed today). Perhaps the U.S. Army?— ERcheck (talk)

The references on Latinos in Wartime mentions both De Castro and Barkley as MOH recipients. Their references on Barkley are (Vista 1992; Heller 1993), both after 1989 when he was recognized.

Flag chat

I know you want to use various flags of Puerto Rico, and that is one goal that I commend, but the problem is that many of the flag images that you have uploaded in the past, they are coming from sources that do not want their flags images to be used. What I can suggest is that we merge this article with Flag of Puerto Rico and keep the flags that are freely licensed, then link to both FOTW and Vexilla Mundi, but not upload the images here. Fact finding on MoH

Some of the sources above are from military sites; however, there is not an explicit explanation that I can find about Bartley's award and the recognition as a "first". The official Honor Roll was not established until 1917. That begs the question of what records were actually kept prior to 1917. I think that the Army would the correct source to answer the question, but I'm not sure what office should receive the inquiry. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society (CMOHS) might be a good place to start. I did try to call the CMOHS today, but as I noted, it was after hours. — ERcheck (talk) 04:41, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

You handled the issue of "first" very adeptly. It is clear that De Castro was the first Hispanic MOH recipient; and sources say that Bartley is the first from the U.S. Army; so, it is correct, as far as if verifiable at this point.

McClintock bio attacks

I've noticed that one\ or two partisans have been heavily and untruthfully editing the bio of controversial (and widely admired) Puerto Rico Senate President McClintock. As one who has defended the integrity of all things Puerto Rican in Wikipedia, I hope you'll take a look and undo a lot of the damage that they've done. I know the Senator and his wife quite well, know that he doesn't live in Monte Hiedra's million dollar homes but in a much less exclusive upper-middle-class neighborhood called Laderas de San Juan (but then again, why should that appear in Wikipedia!!!???). Rocky Versace

Thank you for the kind compliment. If you perused my user page (of which I'm still learning the ins and outs--someone or something changed/moved a userbox and I'm not sure why???) you could tell military history, particularly the entire notion of gallantry, holds a special place in my feelings. Rocky Versace's name caught my eye. I was in Army ROTC in college and had a TAC officer at Ft. Sill in 1967 named Captain Arthur Jackson--he was a tanker, a black dude, and a cool guy. We called him "Captain Jack". He and Rocky Versace had been lieutenants together at the Armor school in Fort Knox and it was he who first told me the story of Rocky's ordeal. Comment on del Valle article

Tony, I notice that you put an image of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal in Pedro del Valle's infobox. I moved it into the Awards and decorations section. My reasoning — (1) He is not notable because of the DSM, but rather for his entire career; (2) the infobox "Awards" section was intended to hold the awards (the generally accepted ordering is by order of precedence); (3) the Medal of Honor recipients are unique, in particular being awarded the Medal of Honor is of itself notable, the special honors that are due a Medal of Honor recipient, the immediate recognizability of the award, etc. This is my opinion. What is verifiable sources?

Some days ago I corrected and supplemented some misleading information on the page famous Puertorricans, with this;

It seems that you deleted it saying "please provide a verifiable source" Revision as of 22:19; 17 July 2006. Can you please define what is a verifiable source under your history standards? I ask, with due respect, that the verifiable source was properly quoted as requierd by the History discipline of which I earneda a Ph.D. The verifiable source for readers like you and your audience is: Lopez Cantos, Angel., Miguel Enriquez. San Juan: Ediciones Puerto, 1998.

Now, if that does not serve you, please let me know, because I may interpret that you do not have confidence in hispanic scholars, you need an Engish name or scholar name to ascertain the veracity of history, that you do not know the scholar Lopez Cantos, or maybe worst; that you do not want no body messing with your history point of view. In which case I can understand and also have my own interpretation about people that do that; Plain historical incompetency. It gets to me when I find people that likes to feel on top of the hill saying this and that, and deleting other people contributions simply because they don't like what others have to contribute or simply put, they don't like the sound of it. Excuse me if I soud rough on you, but that is the way I do feel. • Que pasa compadre? I know that there are certain things in life that bother us but, that's life. O.K., so you have your PhD in history (Which is very admirable) and I am a member of Mensa International. When it comes to writing articles in Wikipedia, it doesn't mean a thing if we do not follow the guidelines established. One of those guidelines clearly state that "Original Research" is not allowed, only reliable sources which can be verified by other editors in the "net". I don't make the rules here, I just follow them and inforce them.

I respect the fact that a "scholar" like Lopez Cantos has written about Miguel Enriquez but, to state that "Enriquez in 18th Century was considered the richest man in the New World" seems a little too far fetched. Considered by whom? The "richest" man in the world? Richer then the King of Spain, King of England? This sounds as "point of view". Where's the proof of these claims? Don't tell me that just because Lopez Canto states this in his book that it is a fact. As a historian you should know that history if based on facts and not what may be considered as "POV" and that many scholars and historians alike rewrite history to acommadate their beliefs.

Now let me remind you that I am not indicating that yours and Lopezs position is as you say "plain historical incompetency", these statements may be true but, unless they can be verified on a reliable source they will be deleted. It is policy, not me.

I respect you for your knowledge and I expect the same from you to me. If you looked at my User page you would have realized that I have contributed more to Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican related articles hwere in the "Pedia" and that thanks to my efforts more English speaking people are learning about our wonderful island and its people.
