Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the   button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.

Mar 2019: You can't change an article without a source being cited

edit

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. At least one of your edits, while it may have been in good faith, was difficult to distinguish from vandalism. To help other editors understand the reason for the changes, you can use an edit summary for your contributions. You can also take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Read the nice articles in the Welcome message on your Talk page.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:45, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Which contribution was seen as vandalism may I ask? Mathew hk (talk)
Peter Snow: You deleted information about an earlier marriage. Wikipedia lists all spouses, not just the most recent. Although not vandalism, your edit to Dan Snow was deleted as not relevant - while readers may want to know how tall and athlete or model is, no so for a television person unless their height (or weight) is part of their TV persona. David notMD (talk) 13:40, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The earlier marriage of Peter Snow had no source, nor could I find a reliable source online so I saw no reason for it to stay. I suppose the Dan Snow edit may have been unnecessary but I just thought people may want to know as it seems to be a key characteristic. Mathew hk (talk)
See: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/how-we-met-peter-snow-and-angela-lambert-1252905.html Peter has six children: one from a brief relationship, two with Alison, three with Ann. Ref #9 also mentions that Ann is second wife. David notMD (talk) 14:50, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Alright decent Mathew hk (talk)

Userboxes

edit

You have put Userboxes on your User page that clearly do not apply. Please remove these or risk having your User page deleted. David notMD (talk) 12:16, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Alright yeah sorry about that will do Mathew hk (talk)
Thank you. David notMD (talk) 13:23, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@David notMD: it apply to me. "Mathew" is the impersonator. BTW, everyone misspelled my English name in my home country, but I preferred two t. Matthew hk (talk) 23:23, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Infobox timestamps

edit

Hello, I'm Mattythewhite. Welcome to Wikipedia! I just wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Virgil van Dijk were not quite right. When updating statistics within the infobox of a footballer, please make sure you update the timestamp at the same time, so that both readers and fellow editors know when the information was last updated.

You can do this by replacing the existing timestamp within the |club-update= or |pcupdate= parameter for club stats, or the |nationalteam-update= or |ntupdate= parameter for international stats. For articles that use a DMY date format, use five tildes (~~~~~), or for MDY dates, use {{subst:mdytime}}. This will generate the specific time the update was made.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:27, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Right well it was factual information as he has just played a Premier League match against Fulham today. Can these timestamps be use on the Wikipedia phone app? Mathew hk (talk)
Also you literally changed the statistic to 45 straight after you deleted mine, is there any reason for this? Couldn’t you have just added whatever you needed to add about the date and not delete mine and call it ’incomplete’? Just asking. Mathew hk (talk)
Recommend you read the rules and/or observe others acting properly and in good faith before jumping in with both feet, or you won't be very long for WP. Best, Quisqualis (talk) 18:45, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ok, but what have I done wrong that should result in being removed from WP? Mathew hk (talk)
You seem to have an intention to "leave your mark" on Wikipedia, rather than improve it ("well it was factual information as he has just played a Premier League match against Fulham today"). Not citing sources, using ridiculous badges on your user page, making excuses for yourself, thinking you help Wikipedia by rushing from the mass media to Wikipedia and "posting" it without sources. There are millions of articles on this site which have glaringly poor writing and need a copy edit. You possess English literacy. I suggest you read an article about which you are interested and fix what is undeniably broken in grammar, spelling, usage, etc. and which does not require a source citation. Med/Science is often the worst; entertainment often not in dire need. It's a lot like picking up trash in your community as a volunteer. You won't become the King of Wikipedia via either approach, (note that this is not social media), but the latter approach is actually constructive. Are you here to build an encyclopedia, or for the greater glory of Matthew hk?--Quisqualis (talk) 20:00, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Q: Coming across as too harsh on a newbie. M cleared the inappropriate Userboxes already - as a new editor did not realize that Wikipedeans are somewhat humor-impaired. His other edits are shallow end of the pool getting used to what this is about. David notMD (talk) 20:09, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Q: Ok I understand but ‘leaving my mark’ has so far just involved the at least attempt of improving WP. You’re example of using my corrections to the page Virgil Van Dijk against me isn’t a reason for me to be removed from WP, as it is a clear attempt to just briefly improve the accuracy of his statistics, of course I now apologise for not adding the date and other vital info there. Other than that I haven’t done anything so far without adding citation as far as I know. Also, as David not MD stated I have removed the badges I stupidly added to my page and have apologised. I don’t exactly want to be the ‘King of Wikipedia’ and will improve my attitude on here in future but to be fair you could improve yours towards beginners. But yeah I’ll make sure to just stick to relevant and necessary edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mathew hk (talkcontribs) 2019-03-17T20:36:48 (UTC)
You're not about to be blocked on WP right now. What I meant was that, writ large, silliness, grandstanding and trying to be "first" with new material sans citations will, and to my observation, has, led many in a direction approaching the exit.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:42, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Alright decent. Just out of interest though, which of my edits have been without citation? Was it just the one on Virgil Van Dijk?Mathew hk (talk)
PS: Peter Snow. Don't play the fool with other editors to get a pass on unconstructive editing. Take the time, learn the rules, and watch how other editors do things. Thanks--Quisqualis (talk) 20:51, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
But after I was given this news I did go back to add a citation but I was corrected by David NotMD as he provided me with the information that was correct and proved against my citation. But thanks for the advice will do Mathew hk (talk)

Q: From looking at your Talk page, you at times have jumped on editors for not leaving Edit summaries or other minor infractions. For Peter Snow, Mathew removed content he thought had no citation. I found and forwarded a citation, and I restored mention of first wife. I am sure Mathew would have done it if I had not. Let's all find other articles to improve. David notMD (talk) 21:59, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Quisqualis:, Mathew (with one t) was reported at WP:UAA, it was blockable as impersonating . Matthew hk (talk) 01:14, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi impersonator

edit

as title. Matthew hk (talk) 23:24, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hey? Mathew hk (talk)
Matthew hk = 13 years. Mathew hk = 3 days. I suggest Mathew hk reduce confusion by either requesting a name change or creating a new account with a different User name, then going back and deleted old Talk page. On old User page, can leave message to effect David notMD (talk) 03:25, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@David notMD: I am less AGF. His user page initially copied most of my userbox from my user page with only sightly modification. It was corrected, but i can't AGF such action. Matthew hk (talk) 03:28, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I mean I can change my name if you want if there is a way to do that if it’s caused this much inconvenience. I generally didn’t mean to impersonate anyone, my sincere apologies. Mathew hk (talk)
What was the reason for you to copy all those userboxes from Matthew hk when you registered a username closely resembled them, if you don't mean to impersonate? -★- PlyrStar93 Message me. 18:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The name is generally a coincidence, I’m not sure how I can prove that but it’s a fact. I believe I may have copied something to do with Wikiproject Football from him but that was it. I did copy the Userboxes but not from him and I have since apologised. Yeahprobablyidk (talk)

Your account has been blocked indefinitely because it appears to impersonate another Wikipedia user. Users are not allowed to edit with inappropriate usernames, nor is other disruptive behavior ever allowed. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. For best results, please read the guide to appealing blocks first. 331dot (talk) 07:48, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

To request unblock and a new username, please use the following: {{Unblock-un|user=new username|reason=your reason here}} without the nowiki tags. 331dot (talk) 07:51, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'll add that once a new username is proposed, I see no issue with an unblock at this time; I simply wanted the new username choice cleared by an admin first. 331dot (talk) 07:57, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
