User talk:Mattashdene/Tavistock Athletic Club

I see absolutely no reason for this page to be deleted. Yes, there may be one or two instances in the membership section that unintentionally advertise or promote the club, but these are MINOR errors that can be fixed by simply editing the page. According to the 'speedy deletion' tag, it fits the criteria "because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company". It is not promoting the company, it was simply an attempt to provide information. "The page provides information which, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article." (If needs be, I will fundementaly rewrite the article). I however, believe there is a very small amount that needs to be rewritten, and if there is more, I don;t understand the motives behind the decision to nominate the page for deletion! I am new to this and have tried my best to make the page as 'encyclopedia orientated' as possible. When the page was made live, there remained a tag on it saying that it needed feedback from at least one other user. This, is NOT FEEDBACK, more a parting shot. I now have no other option than to appeal, because of this deranged decision. Finally, I am perfectly open to some honest advice, as much as I am willing to make any changes to guarantee the pages' survival. Should the appeal be unsuccessful I would like to know if I can access the information/data which I have entered and save it somewhere.

How to fix the article

edit

I was the deleting administrator--I've seen your reply. It is possible that the article can be fixed. The key problems why I judged it promotional was that it was written in the first person, and contained such material "We meet on Tuesdays ... To become a member, fill in an application form, and hand it with your fee to whoever deals with the registration of the Juniors on a Tuesday." Sec.3.2 "membership Fees". and a list of the detailed results of all its events, along with the results of even the monthly time trials, which is not encyclopedic material for a local club that has less than 300 members. I could equally well have judged it a club that had no indication of significance, which is another criterion for speedy, A7. I probably should have used both reason; I generally do in cases like this. Additionally, it had no references from published sources outside the club, and an unreferenced article will be deleted, though not quite as rapidly.

However, a search of Google News archive brings up a number of results [1], some of which are substantial articles, though from ]]merely the local newspapers. There is some dispute whether this sort of material is significant. But I did spot one article of possibly more than local significance: [2] so it is possible that a sustainable article can be written. So what I have done is moved the article to your user space, as User:Mattashdene/Tavistock Athletic Club,so you can work on it there. Add the references and the material they support, in very brief summary. If you can find any other athletes who have had significant careers beyond local competition, add them. I think it might be possible to rescue some of the results tables: Fr the men, perhaps you can convert part of it it into a table of those who won first place in various events. For the women, if none have yet won first prize, I'd suggest mentioning the 2 or 3 who achieved the highest standing in any of their events (not in each of them), When you;ve done, ask me on my talk page to take a look; I'll make whatever additional corrections I think needed, and put it back in mainspace. If I think it still will not stand, I will send it for a group decision, not decide myself. DGG ( talk ) 18:01, 25 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
