New REFBot

There is a suggestion on Wikipedia:Bot requests for a new REFBot working as DPL bot and BracketBot do. I beg politely for consideration. Please leave a comment if you wish. Thanks a lot in anticipation. --Frze > talk 03:57, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Edit to Mediawiki page on sv.wikipedia

Hello,

I am a bit curious about this edit, or rather about the edit comment. As far as I can understand, the contents of Mediawiki:Signupend does not appear on the new signup page.

Kind regards NH (talk) 09:00, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hey NH, Matt's pretty busy today so I thought I'd chime in, since we worked together on this. The story behind this is that in the redesign of account creation and login, we replaced these large blocks of text with links to local username policies and help guides to logging in or signing up. Then we removed those messages from the code. However, some non-Wikipedia wikis which run MediaWiki need those blank messages for legal disclaimers, so we restored them and then blanked them. Otherwise the now-redundant content would be restored with the next code release. Make sense? Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 20:30, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, makes sense. Thanks! /NH (talk) 13:32, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

Today's motto...

If you intend to live in peace and harmony with your fellow men, you and they should cultivate brotherhood and respect for each other. If you want to work together with them for your mutual benefit, you must practice cooperation.

Nominate one today!

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

I owe you a slight apology for reverting you wholesale; your edit looked very like the Hindutva POV pushers that perennially hound that article (although right now it is skewed in the opposite direction.) Can you help me with this -- an article has been merged when deletion review result was 'keep' and discussion of merger was on.

Hi User:Superm401, and User:Callanecc, the result of discussion for deletion of Ayodhya and After: Issues Before Hindu Society was keep. The merger was against consensus in the middle of a discussion and it was carried out in gross negligence of merge guidelines -- I can't even find the talk page of the merged article. I have brought it up on the relevant talk page. It must be reverted, how can I do that? Can you guide me to the relevant guidelines? Jyoti (talk) 09:44, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I have reverted the merge and updated the talk page and the merge discussion section. Thank you. Jyoti (talk) 10:10, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I requested War in Donbass to be fully protected days ago because of a content dispute. That dispute has long since been resolved, but the article is still protected despite rapidly developing events. I already asked at WP:RPP, but they are being slow. TWA - protected edit requests

Hi, I'm posting here because you're shown as "Guided Tours development and support" at WP:TWA/About. Regarding Wikipedia talk:TWA/Portal and other subpages of Wikipedia talk:TWA - why do so many protected edit requests get submitted? See for example history of Wikipedia talk:TWA/1/Bio. Not one of them is a valid request, they're mostly just random comments. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:33, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

@Redrose64:. Hey. I'm one of the developers on the GuidedTour extension, and thus I provided some technical help to Ocaasi. However, he is the primary author of The Wikipedia Adventure (TWA). TWA is intended to provide a new way for beginners to learn how to use Wikipedia. The associated pages are also protected, I assume so new users testing or playing around don't unintentionally (or otherwise) disrupt it.
If you log off (to see what it looks like for non-admins), then visit a TWA edit page, you'll see a prominent button to "Submit an edit request". That is probably what people are clicking, unfortunately even when they don't have an actual intended edit. This is not TWA-specific. I believe it comes from Template:Protected_page_text/full, via MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext. Superm401 - Talk 05:31, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
The thing is, it does tend to fill up the WP:PER system with irrelevant non-requests. There are three lists for PERs, and this is what just one of those lists looked like at the time that you posted the comment above. The last three are all TWA users saying "Hey! Isn't this great!" or some such. We've always had a few non-requests each week, usually from people playing "what happens if I press this button?" - often they click "Submit an edit request" and save without actually adding any text. But since about June this year, those which are in some way connected with TWA have been happening in significantly greater numbers. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:38, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Is this you?

Hello Superm401! Just came across this edit, and was wondering if that account is who they claim to be (that is, you). If so, is there any relation between that account and other Test accounts like these four I found? Just curious, wondering if you can shed some light on this. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 23:49, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

@Howicus:. We discussed on IRC, but just for the record, I made User:Test 2014-09-11 and User:Test 2014-09-11 2 and that first test edit (the one that says superm401) was mine. Superm401 - Talk 00:17, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

File metadata cleanup

Hello Matt,

I'm contacting you because you offered to help with the File metadata cleanup drive on this wiki. Thank you!

There are still many files lacking machine-readable information, and many of them can be fixed by adding special markers to the information and copyright templates. Can you help? Even occasional or small edits are appreciated :)

I'm available via email, IRC or on-wiki to answer questions if you're not sure how to proceed. Let me know if you need help! Guillaume 21:56, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Commons Helper script

Hi, I'm interested in your Commons Helper user script: User:Superm401/CommonsHelper Labs.js

I tried copying the code to my common.js file (and yes, I did shift-reload). But I don't see any new interface elements where I could click to invoke CH when I look at a local file here (like File:P15exhibw.jpg).

Have I failed to install it properly? Am I missing the place I should look for the button? Or..? -Pete (talk) 03:40, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

@Peteforsyth: Thanks for trying it. It only shows on the edit screen currently (right above the edit box). Superm401 - Talk 04:00, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Aha, thanks! I see the button now, and successfully used it on File:'Eyes', Collage on paper 1965.jpg. \o/
So, I hope I do not come across as looking a gift horse in the mouth -- this is an excellent thing. But some suggestions -- and I'm curious if you are thinking about adding any of these options:
  • Can the button (or perhaps a link in the lefthand nav) be added to the main screen, to save a click?
  • Is it possible to pre-fill the name of the file, saving a copy-paste? (I tried it on a second file, and this worked. Not sure what went wrong the first time, but maybe not a major concern.)
  • Any way to port this to other wikis? (My main use right now is on English Wikisource).
Thanks for making this -- I'm going to keep using it now that I have it. -Pete (talk) 04:13, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
@Peteforsyth: Thanks for the feedback. Note, I only wrote the code to start the process (which is partly based on some earlier code by Krimpet). The part at Tool Labs (Move-to-commons assistant) was written by Magnus Manske. I've now added it to the toolbox ("Tools" section in the sidebar). Note you will have to re-copy the loader script from User:Superm401/CommonsHelper Labs.js. I think the pre-fill issue is because of the single quotes. I believe I am encoding it correctly, but there seems to be an edge case the Tool Labs implementation does not handle. I made some modifications that should allow it to work on Wikisource. You should be able to make it work everywhere by copying the loader (User:Superm401/CommonsHelper Labs.js) to meta:User:Peteforsyth/global.js. Alternatively, you can just put it in common.js on English Wikisource. If you put it in your global.js, remove the copy from User:Peteforsyth/common.js. Otherwise, it will load twice. Superm401 - Talk 05:41, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I am familiar with CH and have used it for some time -- but I am happy to have a handier interface to it. Thank you so much for the quick response to my feedback -- very helpful! I have been having some unrelated problems using it on Wikisource (I've asked Magnus about it on his Commons talk page) so I won't be able to test from there until I can get that resolved, but I look forward to using it there. Thanks! -Pete (talk) 06:00, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
FYI, the new code introduces an extraneous ".org" when it pre-fills the form. -Pete (talk) 19:32, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
@Peteforsyth: Thanks, fixed now. Let me know if you hit any other problems. Superm401 - Talk 05:36, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

User:Superm401/Compare link.js

Hello. I think the script has a little problem. It generates the compare link outside of div in where the original button was, causing .mw-history-revisiondelete-button go down to overlap revision list. The compare revision button/link should stay in div('#mw-history-compare div:first-of-type' and '#mw-history-compare div:last-of-type' should work). Also, I think $buttons = $histForm.find('input.historysubmit') can be replaced with $buttons = $('.mw-history-compareselectedversions-button'). I don't know much about JS, so please excuse me if I got something wrong. Regards, --IRTC1015 (talk) 17:38, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Invitation

Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Superm401,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. Please close AFD with consensus and no supporters

Matt,

The AFD page Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2015_March_27#File:4U9525_flight_path4.png was opened in error - the submitter erroneously claimed that the website's copyright policy applies to their press releases given freely to the media. The FlightRadar24 forum administrator who released this file stated

"I was talking with a lady on CNN for almost 1 hour yesterday to explain the data in first post."

And stated

We normally never upload this data to FR24 as it would consume too much data traffic for hosts (and for us). But after MH370 we learned that the raw data could have a very big value afterwards, and since live uploading of the raw data is not an option, we store it in the FR24 receiver for as long as possible. Depending on coverage we can store last received data for about 4-10 hours. If something happens we can go back and download the data from a receiver, and this is what we did with the receivers near 4U9525 when we heard about the accident.

This release of information is not under their usual usage conditions for the main site - the files released by the admin, used to produce the maps, are under the same conditions as the files used to produce the MH 370 maps - which the site explicitly says

Screenshots from Flightradar24.com or any of the Flightradar24 apps may be used for free by media if screenshots are attributed to Flightradar24

There is no copyvio - the user made a mistake, and is waiting to close the issue until they get back from work, given the consensus to keep the file. There are no supporters for deletion in the discussion. I'd request that, given that the story is one of the top stories worldwide, and has 166,000 views in a day, can you make an executive decision to close the AFD and take the stupid tag off the image, which is prominent in the third story on ITN? -- Aronzak (talk) 07:03, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

@Aronzak: Yes, I've closed it as withdrawn by nominator. Superm401 - Talk 03:46, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Partial Adoption Request

Awhile and a name ago, you said that you would be willing to adopt me. Well... I have been wandering around in the land of the TV show NCIS and a few questions have raised their troublesome little heads. I won't annoy you with the details if you are too busy, so please let me know what you think. (re: lack of citations, how to add a citation in the middle, I hate to say the pl#+$%^sm word) Thanks, Nora Norawashere (talk) 21:31, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Wikidata and proveit!

First thanks for proveit! who is a great tool who gratly improves sourcing experience on Wikipedia.

Then, I a a suggestion about Wikidata : Wd stores a set of references, and there is some templates like https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod%C3%A8le:Cite_%C3%A9l%C3%A9ment that can be used to store references.

Wikidata has also a need for improved reference experience as referencing can be fastidious. Can we imagine a better integration beetween Wikidata and proveit!, for example in sourcing Wikipedia by using Wikidata as a reference database backend and/or a specific version of provit! for Wikidata ? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Multi-State Lottery Association, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Trust. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Lakireddy Bali Reddy

Thank you so much for your NPOV editing on the Lakireddy Bali Reddy article as this (at least to me) writing style is still something I’m attempting to learn, and try to work on every week. Also, and if you’d be so kind, could you take a look at the Krista Franklin article? Thanks. Picomtn (talk) 11:21, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

@Picomtn: Thanks for your feedback. :) NPOV editing is indeed difficult. It is challenging for me sometimes too. The Krista Franklin article is well-structured, but it is missing other people (critics, etc.) talking about her work. It only has her talking about her own work.
P.S. It looks like you commented on my work talk page instead of my personal one. This is the page for my personal account. Mattflaschen - Talk 03:44, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
@Picomtn: Can you not ping/mention me on the talk page of articles I have not edited, such as Talk:Sorcha Faal reports. Thanks. Mattflaschen - Talk 16:18, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Move ProveIt documentation

Hi Matt, I'm on the process of centralizing the ProveIt documentation at Commons, and as part of it I'd like to move User:ProveIt GT to Wikipedia:ProveIt (following Wikipedia:HotCat and most other gadgets with documentation) and then move the bulk of the documentation to Commons:Help:Gadget-ProveIt, update it and leave some links behind. I requested the move at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Contested technical requests but I was required to ask you first (quite reasonable). So what do you think? Should we move the documentation about ProveIt to Wikipedia:ProveIt, or leave it at User:ProveIt GT? Cheers! --Felipe (talk) 16:09, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Page Curation question

Hi Matt, sorry to bother on IRC/here - I have a question regarding PageTriage's API capabilities. Firstly, does it have any? I can see in the source that there are references to the API, but these aren't reflected on the MW API pages. If it doesn't have API calls available, is there a way I could scrape stats data from somewhere? Thanks for all the hard work! -- samtar talk or stalk 12:57, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
