Decline of article for Charles Johnson

Sorry I put the created article up, Matthew. I should have deleted mine later--when I located the proper entry under "Charles Foster Johnson".

No worries. I prefer Charles Foster Johnson myself - it's much more complete. Thanks for your contribution to Wikipedia! ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 22:04, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion.   Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by   Sasata (submissions),   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and   Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. About changes to article titles

Hey! Needed a little help, and you were number one on the teahouse host list! :)

Can you tell me how do the article titles can be changed for search engine purposes? Or will it take time?

Actually i changed the title of my college's page on Wiki, but it's still the old one that's being returned in google searches.

Hi, Div2604!
Search engines take some time to update their databases. They have "robots" that "crawl" the web, indexing it. These robots can only work so fast, so there's a delay.
Give it a few days, and the new title will show up in the search engines. Meanwhile, the old title will redirect someone to the new title, so they still get the current version of the article.

Protection Agains Vandalism

Hello! We're having a case of continuous vandalism of the Hamish entry, mostly by IP editors. Could you possibly help with semi-protecting it? Thanks in advance. MammonI.Dumah (talk) 12:44, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I can't semi protect it. But I've poked the admins, who will look into it. ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 17:24, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. I don't think it needs protection now. It was on the 8th for a bit. And vanadlism removed since the 8th was actually there for a while. Feel free to make such requests at WP:RFPP in the future. Rjd0060 (talk) 17:25, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Article on Tuppil Venkatacharya

Matthew,

Could you please give my some guidance as to what I need to do to have this article on my father accepted? I did include third party references, which I had neglected to do last time. What else is missing?

Thanks, Hariven (talk) 20:33, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Hari Venkatacharya

Hi, Hariven! Welcome to Wikipedia!
The current problem with your article is that it doesn't cite nearly enough sources. Judging by the article, your father is still alive. Therefore, he's covered under our biographies of living persons policy, which requires that every claim you make about him (no matter how trivial) requires a source. This policy exists because Wikipedia was almost sued on several occasions by people who wanted stuff added or removed from articles. So, we require sources to make sure our information is accurate.
So, you need to add more sources to the article (and I'd recommend looking at the proper format for citing sources while you're at it). If you add more, you should be good to go.
Feel free to reply below if you have any more questions. ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 17:09, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

The Co-operative Academy of Manchester

Thanks for you help in reviewing articles at Articles for Creation. Just a quick note - you declined this article through lack of references, but I've passed it because WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES states that secondary schools are generally assumed to be notable unless they are completely unsourced and cannot be proven to exist. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:47, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

I've never run into that policy before... weird. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up, sorry about that. ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 17:04, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Robert Elwes Traveller Painter

Juliet Webster (talk) 21:56, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Juliet Webster

Concerning your review of the above, I am puzzled about the request for references.

Robert Elwes wrote " A Sketchers Tour Round the World" in 1853 (not long after Darwin) An original copy of his book costs $2,000 if you can get hold of it. It is however, reproduced and is available on Amazon as a "Classic Reprint" costing under £10. Surely the book itself is sufficient as a reference? Perhaps I did not make that clear and I should have indicated a link to Amazon. The fact that there have only been two articles written about Robert Elwes and his book cannot be a reason for not accepting this article. Surely the author of a book considered a "Classic" by Amazon should be featured on Wikipedia.

There are no other published references that I am aware of.

I would be glad to hear of your suggestions. Thank you for your time in reading this and for reading my original article.

Juliet Webster (talk) 21:56, 22 October 2012 (UTC) Juliet Webster

Hi, Juliet! Welcome to Wikipedia!
You've actually put your finger on the problem your article has, "There are no other published references that I am aware of." Unfortunately, that means he fails our general notability guideline, as he needs to be mentioned in other reliable sources outside of what he produced.
But, if he did make a "classic," then he should have been mentioned other places. In fact, I'd be surprised if he wasn't. So, I'd recommend doing some more hunting in newspaper archives and the like. Once you find sources, reference them as described in our referencing instructions.
Good luck with the article! Feel free to reply if you have any other questions, and I'm sorry I didn't reply back sooner. I'll be better about it   ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 16:08, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
