Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, MaxineBangs. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Nela Zisser, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Logical Cowboy (talk) 12:29, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Greetings Logical Cowboy, I removed the image of Nela Zisser as it did not seem like an appropriate image to use on a Wikipedia page. I removed some unreferenced information and added new references from a google search of her name. After editing the page I had a browse through the history and see you've had trouble with people editing the page in the past. MaxineBangs (talk) 13:23, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Enquiry about speedy deletion nomination

edit

Hi Maxine to avoid future errors, please explain the error that caused speedy deletion and if we are allowed to make articles about business or companies ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laznica (talkcontribs) 13:27, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Laznica, your article about Dark Tower Hosting did not indicate the importance or significance of the subject so I nominated it for speedy deletion. Next time please state why the subject is notable and include references to back up your statements. MaxineBangs (talk) 13:58, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of Mnogo.ru Club

edit

Hello! Could you explain why my article Mnogo.ru Club was rapidly deleted? --Карта123456 (talk) 08:13, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Карта123456Reply

Hello Карта123456. The page was deleted because it was a purely promotional article and Wikipedia doesn't accept advertising. Please see WP:G11 for guidance. MaxineBangs (talk) 08:23, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

OK, I see. However I can't understand the difference between my article and, for example,Air Miles or Nectar loyalty card. I would like to improve my article that is why I need to become aware of my mistakes. Карта123456

Hi Карта123456. That's okay, maybe you could try rewriting the page to not sound promotional and upload it through Draft:Mnogo.ru Club so an administrator can review it before it goes live. I see you've already got one there waiting for review. MaxineBangs (talk) 08:35, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I have one, bit it's still not reviewed. How long should I wait? Карта123456

Hello again Карта123456. It can sometimes take up to a month or longer depending how backed up the pages to review are. An admin should alert you if the page is accepted or declined, until then you can work on the draft and try to make it sound as neutral as possible. Also make sure you back up any information with references. MaxineBangs (talk) 13:37, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Okay, thank you very much! Карта123456

You're welcome, Карта123456! Good luck :) MaxineBangs (talk) 06:01, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

CSD

edit

Slow down a bit, please.

Please check [1] and [2].

The first definitely isn't nonsense, and it only took me a moment to sort out the context of the second (in fact, I don't think the original would have been deleted 'no context' anyway).

Please be careful with things that fall outside CSD A7 - places, tribes, whatever - because categories such as A1 and A3 are really very narrow (think "total nonsense"). If in doubt - tag it and give it a chance, maybe advise the (probably new) user what is needed, and check back later. Or if you don't have the time for that, use PROD, which at least gives them some time to fix it. (Or even AfD, but that's a bit more hassle).

If you disagree, or don't understand what I mean, let me know. Thanks. 88.104.20.79 (talk) 14:01, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi 88.104.20.79. First of all, why are you editing through your IP address and not an account? Second, both pages you've linked to me have almost no content and no references at all. If someone wants to create a Wikipedia page, they would take the time to write more than one line. Don't you think? MaxineBangs (talk) 14:15, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

First - personal preference. There is no necessity to log in. I assure you I'm not avoiding scrutiny or anything; refer to Wikipedia:IPs are human too.
Second - they might have almost no context, but they had enough for anyone to pretty easily tell what they were talking about. New users often develop articles slowly, and it's extremely hard to get it right first time. People writing articles like that need help, and having their work deleted within minutes can put them off bothering - WP:BITE.
Note, I have absolutely no sympathy for people posting 'spam' - such as the many new articles you've seen and tagged, which meet A7. However, I have considerably more sympathy for articles about places and other things. We need new editors creating articles about appropriately notable things - and places are almost always notable (WP:NPLACE).
I suggest you reserve use of A1 (and G1 'nonsense') for absolute total junk. Refer to WP:CSD#A1, especially Caution is needed when using this tag on newly created articles. This excludes coherent {{Non-English}} material, and poorly translated material.
Re "they would take the time to write more than one line" - they might add more, if they get the chance before it gets deleted! 88.104.20.79 (talk) 14:31, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I see where you're coming from but isn't that what WP:SANDBOX and WP:DRAFT is for? It's very clear for new users when creating an article that it's a better idea to create a draft first while working on it and then submitting it for approval once it's done. MaxineBangs (talk) 14:43, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it's clear at all - I think it's very difficult and confusing for them. If the draft process worked a bit better, and perhaps if all new users were forced to make a draft...or if, instead of CSD, we moved articles-with-some-potential to Draft namespace...well, that's a whole different discussion (and a considerable amount of differing opinions). But right now, no, it's not very obvious. Also, drafts usually don't get looked at for a month or more, and most sane people have given up way before that - except some dedicated spammers :-s 88.104.23.102 (talk) 15:05, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I understand your concerns but if we let all articles like the two mentioned above stay in there current state then Wikipedia wouldn't be the reliable encyclopaedia it is. MaxineBangs (talk) 15:10, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have you tried clicking 'random article' a few times, recently? The vast majority of articles on Wikipedia are actually pretty pathetic. But that's OK.
Anyway - whether you agree it should be that way or not, according to current policy and guidelines, those can't be speedy-deleted. And if you keep tagging things like those for speedy, you'll get warnings and things. Take this advice or ignore it. Best of luck, 88.104.23.102 (talk) 15:21, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes I have and thank you, best of luck to you too. MaxineBangs (talk) 15:25, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Melathulukkankulam

edit

Hello MaxineBangs. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Melathulukkankulam, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: clearly identifiable as a village and therefore not eligible for A1 (or other CSD). Thank you. SmartSE (talk) 17:53, 24 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Waqar Ali Mumtaz Mohammad. Your page PBTE - Pujab Board of Technical Education Lahore is still not formatted correctly to fit Wikipedia's standards and there are still bare URLs on the page. Please see WP:BAREURLS for guidance. MaxineBangs (talk) 08:18, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wayne Sharpe

edit

Hi Maxine, could you please tell me why the reference I provided for the Wayne Sharpe page was not suitable, so I can find an alternative. Thankyou Martina_ctx

Hello Martina_ctx. Many things were wrong with the page, not just the reference. Was it copied and pasted from somewhere? MaxineBangs (talk) 07:26, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

No it wasn't. arhh please help.Martina_ctx.

Do you have any more references about him, Martina_ctx? Also what is your relation to him? If you can provide some more references on the page, I could format it for you. MaxineBangs (talk) 07:54, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've removed the "speedy deletion" tag and replaced it with a "multiple issues" tag. This will give you some time to find more references. The concerns I have are if he meets notability or not and are you able to find more references? If you can, I will format the page for you. MaxineBangs (talk) 08:01, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I will put references on the page now, thank you so much. I am Waynes pa, so I understand that I am best to provide only requests to editors to ensure there is no conflict of interest — Preceding unsigned comment added by Martina _ctx (talkcontribs) 8:15, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Martina _ctx I have formatted the page for you and added those references in. Yes you are correct, it would be a good idea to not edit the page yourself as there is a conflict of interest with you being his P.A. You can have a look at Wayne Sharpe now to see my changes. MaxineBangs (talk) 08:19, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

You are amazing! Thankyou so much Martina _ctx
