This page aims to create "official responses" which are likely to be slower to be created than unofficial ones. Is there anything we can do to prevent that? Pcb21| Pete 16:21, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- That's why I specified a 24-hour editing period for the responses, barring controversies. The aim is to be quick, yet still authoritative. Meelar (talk) 16:35, 2004 Jul 26 (UTC)
I'm not sure we even want to respond to a lot of articles - following the recent Register experience I think it would have been better just to let it go. How would we decided which ones there was a reasonable chance of a retraction etc for? Mark Richards 17:14, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Even if we don't get a retraction (and I don't expect to, most of the time), at least a response would possibly get mentioned, giving readers another look at us. Most criticisms fall into the general category of unreliable/disorganized--and nothing rebutts that better than a professional-looking, prompt, calm reply. It might make both reporters and readers reconsider us. Meelar (talk) 17:17, 2004 Jul 26 (UTC)
Maybe, I still think that it would have been better to let the first Reg article go, and not provoke the second, more abusive one. Mark Richards 17:33, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- I believe that following this process, we'll be less likely to generate the second one, and more likely to get the best possible outcome, namely a future column saying, "Well, they wrote back to me, and this is what they had to say". Community editing will nip anything like what got sent to the Register. Meelar (talk) 17:36, 2004 Jul 26 (UTC)
It would be good if the publicity committee took special responsibility for maintaining Wikipedia:Replies. If that page is always in a good state, then creating rebuttal letters would be easier. Pcb21| Pete 17:40, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Nothing I didn't expect. Johnleemk | Talk 12:11, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)
