Ava Michelle
Hi Megalibrarygirl I could use your help, my article on Ava Michelle has been nominated for deletion despite her being very famous. That article is receiving 20,000 views a day. I have had problems in the past with these deletionists whose only goal it seems is to destroy others work. I am all for the feminist movement, this girl deserves an article, please help. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 12:59, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- James Kevin McMahon I'll see if there's any good sources for her in the databases. She might be WP:TOOSOON, but I won't know till I look. If I find anything, I'll add it. :) Also, please don't assume that people are trying to destroy your work. I know it feels that way, but the nominators for deletion are acting in good faith. A kitten for you!
Thank you for your substantial support on the Ava Michelle article. Jim

- @James Kevin McMahon: no problem. She's notable and has coverage going back years. I'm glad I could help. But next time, don't panic! If worse comes to worse, we can always draftify an article for you to keep in userspace till they get more acting chops under their belts. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:47, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Mary Tillman Smith: doubts about meaning of parts of the text
Hello! How are you?
I am currently translating to Catalan language the article about Mary Tillman Smith and I have some doubts about the specific meaning of some sentences. If you don't mind, I suggest using https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us as a reference for explaining it to me.
"She created bold, colorful and expressive paintings"
- A) What do you mean by "bold"?
- 2nd meaning in MacMilland], probably close to llamativo
"Her second marriage was also short, ending when Smith saw that her tenant-farmer husband's year-end settlement was grossly short."
- B) I don't understand the who in the sentence "tenant-farmer husband's year-end settlement was grossly short". The husband is also the tenant? Is it the husband's tenant?
- Her husband farmed land that he did not own, rather he leased the land from someone else[1], and as a sharecropper only received a portion of the proceeds from selling his produce. Either aparcero, granjero arrendatario or agrícolas arrendatarios.[2]
- C) When you write "farmer", do you fear to the one who works growing plants or crops OR the one who works with animals? In Catalan and Spanish language, we don't have a word which means both.
- As they were sharecropping (per the source), they grew crops, so definitely plants.
- D) What is a year-end settlement? I know a settlement is an agreement, as a contract. But, a year-end has several meanings and I don't know how to translate it well.
- Means more like the accounting process at the end of the contract; like settling-up[3], i.e. ajustar cuentas. At the end of the year, the owner of the land sold the crops and took his payment for the land and then gave his tenant some of the proceeds. According to the source, Tillman Smith thought they were due over $1,000, but they only got $17 from the landlord.[4]
"Her complaints about the mistake, a more than $1,000 difference, led to John Smith "sending her away."
- E) What does "sending her way" mean?
- Banishing her[5], i.e. desterrar.
Of course, do not haste to answer!

- I'd say so, Winged Blades of Godric. I went through and worked on the article, cleaning up and adding more biographical and critical information. Thanks for bringing her to my attention. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:48, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |
