WikiProject Visual arts
editHi Mianvar1,
I saw your work on articles related to visual art and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch the WikiProject Visual arts talk page, which is a noticeboard for Wikipedia's fine arts coverage. It's a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about content related to artists and fine arts. Take a look for yourself!
And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider adopting a cleanup category or participating in one of our current formal discussions.
Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Welcome to Wikipedia! Hope to see you around. czar 23:37, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi CZAR,
Thanks for reaching out and for the links and references. I have checked them out, did a bit of editing and will look for other opportunities to contribute.–––– Mianvar1 15 February 2018
Replaceable fair use File:Arthur Lerner Self-portrait 2003.jpeg
editThanks for uploading File:Arthur Lerner Self-portrait 2003.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:48, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: Thank you for your feedback and guidance. I have responded as you suggested, on the file description and talk pages. Best, Mianvar1 (talk) 17:23, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Just for reference, not being able to find an existing free image of a living person has not typically been considered an acceptable justification for non-free use because the long-established consensus is that the possibility of creating a new free equivalent exist as long as the person is alive. It might not be you or me who creates the free equivalent and it might not be done today or tomorrow, but it doesn’t have to be any of that. As long as the subject’s still living, the equivalent can be created by anyone at anytime, including the subject. There are certain exceptions to this, some are given in item #1 in WP:NFC#UUI, but the general consensus though as been not to allow such use for such a reason. The other argument you make is much more interesting and may require further discussion at WP:FFD or WT:NFC. — Marchjuly (talk) 22:39, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I should have left out the final aside—I see your point on that. In reality, my rationale was what you called the "more interesting argument." With that in mind, how should I proceed—leave the image as is? Mianvar1 (talk) 22:52, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- I posted something at WT:NFC#Non-free use of File:Arthur Lerner Self-portrait 2003.jpeg. My "feeling" is that the way you're trying to justify seems more appropriate for non-free use outside of the infobox, but others might feel differently. Anyway, an admin will review the tag and the contest and evaluate the arguments made in each; if they feel further discussion is warranted, they will decline the nomination and advise accordingly. If not, they may delete the file outright leaving open the possibility of a WP:REFUND at a later date.
- As for a free equivalent for the infobox, there are a couple things which could be tried. I agree that a free equivalent of this particular image is unlikely to be obtained, but "free equivalent" does not mean "free version of the exact same image". Asking at WP:RI and c:COM:RI occasionally works, but the process can be slow. Some people have had success with WP:PERMISSION, even directly contacting the subject of the article or their representatives, and obtaining a good free image of the person via that route. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:12, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

Don Baum image
editThe main infobox image is generally reserved for an image of the subject of the article, which in this case would be a photo of Baum. Non-free images of artwork are typically fine for main infoboxes when the article is a stand-alone article about the work in question, but they shouldn't really be used in the main infoboxes of articles about the artist. So, please try and figure if there's a way to incorporate this image into the body of the article that is in accordance with WP:NFCC#8. The best way to do this is by placing the image near any sourced critical commentary specifically about it or any sourced critical commentary discussing the particular style or technique it is supposed to illustrate. Simply adding non-free images of artwork to artist articles is likely to be considered WP:DECORATIVE, especially when involving multiple images, unless there is a clear contextual connection between sourced article content and image.
As for the infobox image, Baum is deceased which means it might be possible to use a non-free image of him for identification purposes in the main infobox per item 10 of WP:NFCI. As long as there is no reasonable expectation that a free equivalent can neither be found nor created per WP:NFCC#1, a non-free should be acceptable. While it's obvious that a new photo of someone who has died cannot be taken, it might be possible that a older existing photo which has been released under a free license or which can be converted to a free license can be found. How hard and extensively a search is needed is a bit subjective, but generally a little more effort than simply downloading the first photo you find on Google is expected. If you do search and are unable to find anything suitable, then you can upload a non-free as {{Non-free biog pic}} using {{Non-free use rationale biog}}.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask them below, at WT:NFC or WP:MCQ. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:03, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: Thank you for your feedback. As you suggested, I moved the art image into the article's body (where it is discussed) and looked for an appropriate image of the subject. I was unable to find a clearly free image, so I selected one whose source was clear (the Smithsonian Archives), where educational use is encouraged, and from which I would use only a small detail (about 10% of the original), so as to make as minimal use of it as possible. Hi! I noticed your article about the Jan Cicero Gallery and thought it was quite good. Have you considered nominating it for Did you know? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:06, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
- @ONUnicorn: Thank you for your assessment. No, I hadn't thought about that—isn't it a bit odd to nominate one's own pages?--Mianvar1 (talk) 17:08, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
- It's not at all odd to nominate one's own pages - probably 90% or more of the pages nominated at DYK are nominated by the person who created them. If no one nominated their own pages there wouldn't be enough articles to fill the DYK section! ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:48, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Images
editHi Mianvar1, Thanks so much for your advice on inserting images into articles! I’m going to go back and review the sizes of the images and then give your method a try. This is my first article, and it feels like I have invested as much time learning how to use Wikipedia as I have writing the article. Fortunately, when I have reached out for help, other Wikipedeans have been generous with their time and knowledge.

Uploading a Wyeth image
editHi Mianvar1. I posed a question at the Help Desk an Image Correctly and was referred to you with high esteem and regards. I have created an article on Andrew Wyeth's Maidenhair and need to upload an image of the painting. My dilemma presently is the correct way to upload an image that obviously holds a copyright but is allowed to be displayed on other WP Wyeth painting pages. Might you be able to guide me through the process so that I could do this correctly? Thank you in advance. Maineartists (talk) 01:36, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Sandeep Mukherjee
editHi Mianvar1—fantastic work on Sandeep Mukherjee! I think it'd be nice for it to appear on the main page through WP:DYK; would that be alright with you? For the blurb, we could potentially use something along the lines of "Did you know...that for his 2015 mural Mutual Entanglements, artist Sandeep Mukherjee instructed the gallery to install the 10 panels in whatever order and orientation they wanted?" Also open to any other blurb ideas you might have. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 21:18, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

editOn 3 May 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sandeep Mukherjee, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sandeep Mukherjee. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Sandeep Mukherjee), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

editWomen in Red 8th Anniversary | |
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary!
