Wikipedia administrators, I am the poet and newspaper editor Michael Ruby. My full name is Michael Handler Ruby. Here is the history of this article about me. Earlier this year, I gave permission to Santanu at webdevliery@gmail.com and to Amit Dey at amitdey2528@gmail.com to create a Wikipedia article about me, and I supplied them with information. Santanu at webdevliery@gmail.com wrote the article about me under the username Michael Handler Ruby. I didn’t pay them to write the article, though I did pay Amit Dey last year to turn my book Memories, Dreams and Inner Voices (Station Hill Press, 2012) into an ebook. After the article was written in May, Wikipedia blocked further editing. We misunderstood the reason for the block, thinking that Wikipedia wanted a change in username. A new username was created, Michael Ruby1, which was connected to my personal email, Michael.Handler.Ruby@gmail.com. I also noticed that there were several problems with the article. First, it should be under the name “Michael Ruby,” not “Michael Handler Ruby,” as my books are under the name Michael Ruby, and Michael Handler Ruby is used for disambigulation purposes. Second, parts of the References section of the article had been done incorrectly. Third, there were several small typos. Santanu's colleague, Amit Dey at amitdey2528@gmail.com, tried to enter the article to make fixes, and that’s when the second block occurred. I understand now that the reason for the blocks was to prevent autobiographies and to authenticate my identity. I don’t believe the present article is an autobiography. It leaves out whole swaths of my life, and it only contains facts about me that would be of interest to readers of Wikipedia. It is entirely designed to fulfill Wikipedia’s goals of being neutral in tone and reliably sourced. As far as authentication is concerned, I am separately writing to info-en@wikimedia.org, as requested, informing them that I am Michael Ruby, who can be reached at this email, Michael.Handler.Ruby@gmail.com. For further authentication, I can be reached at my Wall Street Journal email, Michael.Ruby@wsj.com. If further authentication is needed, I would be happy to provide it. Clearly, a number of mistakes have been made in connection with this article. If you Wikipedia administrators think the article should be withdrawn, I understand and accept it. The OTRS ticket confirms that at least separate three people have access to this account, so that pretty much reinforces the issue of a compromised account. We have no way of knowing which of these people is operating the account at any given time, so as per the usual protocol with such accounts, we cannot unblock it. (I would also add that gmail accounts, unless publicly listed on the subject's own official website, do not generally constitute acceptable confirmation of identity on OTRS; anyone can set up a gmail account with whatever name they like.) To deal with the issue of being "compromised," I requested a new username more than a week ago and I am only accessing this page through my corporate email, michael.ruby@wsj.com, which has been authenticated by Wikipedia. I would like the article to be unblocked so that significant mistakes can be fixed. In the Life and Career section, my book Compulsive Words is incorrectly called Compulsive Word. Request reason:

I have changed both my password and the email associated with my account to michael.ruby@wsj.com, which has been authenticated by Wikimedia as mine. I was told by Martin Urbanec at Wikimedia that if I made those two changes, my account would no longer be compromised. This is what he wrote me: "The only way how to recover an account that was compromised is to change your password (both Wikipedia and email, in case the attacker has access to your email account), log out (which logs out anyone who is currently logged in) and log in again." Now that no one but me can possibly have access to my account and it is no longer compromised, I would appreciate it if an administrator would unblock my account so I can correct the many errors in the Sandbox entry about me, especially in the References section. It seriously misrepresents me to have those errors there. If my fixing those errors violates Wikipedia's policy on autobiography, I would appreciate it if an administrator would suggest how those errors in the Sandbox entry might be corrected. Please ask the person at Wikimedia to participate in this discussion, because unblocking an account identified as compromised is a rare thing indeed. I'm also not sufficiently assured that you won't share access again in the future. Hi 331dot, I've just procesed a rename request, justified as "uncompromising an acoount". I've declined that request, and explained that password should be changed instead. I also recommended Michael contacting English Wikipedia administrators to deal with this issue. I honestly don't think Michael's account can be considered compromised, that usually means an attacker got unauthorized access to the account. If more than 1 person has access to the acc, but with authorization of whoever registered it, it's WP:SHAREDACCOUNT. Either way, this account is currently blocked because "Username closely resembles another user". I believe our policies are unclear here. I'd be happy to consider it "unshared" and/or "uncompromised" in this case, if the password was changed. That is, I believe the specifics here mean we should WP:AGF and not treat it like a compromised account. To be clear, though, I read our policies as stating that if multiple people have access to an account, we consider it compromised, I just think our policies aren't crystal clear on the point. Note that this account is currently called Michael Ruby1. I believe they have verified they are who they say they are, via the above OTRS ticket. I don't have OTRS access, though, so I cannot verify this. TL;DNR: If they have verified their identity, I would support an unblock with a strong warning to avoid any further violations of WP:COI. --Yamla (talk) 17:59, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

If Martin's sufficiently confident that this account is no longer shared, I have no problem with that. The massive COI issues are of course another matter, and I'm not sure they have been addressed properly, but I'm happy - as always - for other admins to act as they see fit. I'm in two minds as far as unblocking is concerned: mostly I agree with Yamla, warn and unblock per WP:AGF – I've looked at the OTRS ticket, identity seems to be adequately verified. But AGF aside, I'm left with this concern: if the user has once shared his password to facilitate black-hat paid editing, what stops that happening again? Disclosure: I have a COI as the subject of this proposed article. Disclosure: I used editors whom I had paid for a previous project to create the initial version of this article in May 2019. They have had no further involvement with the article since July 2019.

As is documented on the article talk page, I showed that I had sole control of this article in the summer of 2019 by only accessing it from my corporate email at The Wall Street Journal, Michael.Ruby@wsj.com, which no one else has access to. As a result, I was able to get the article unlocked. No one has touched the article since then except for me, accessing it only from Michael.Ruby@wsj.com. The article is no longer a product of paid editors. It is my product.

Since the fall of 2019, I have totally redone the references to conform to Wikipedia standards. I have corrected other errors. I have removed many unsourced facts. And I have added a number of recent publications. I believe that the article as a whole is written in a neutral tone. It is substantially sourced. Most remaining unsourced facts, such as poetry teachers at Harvard and Brown, can be partially authenticated by looking at their biographies. If Wikipedia editors in the Teahouse think such unsourced facts should be removed, I will remove them, but they would make the article more useful to people interested in American poets.

I believe that the article is ready for review and I have now submitted it.

Thank you very much for accepting this article for Wikipedia.

I'm wondering if the second template message at the top of the article can now be removed about “undisclosed payments.” Many edits have been made on the article by multiple people, including the administrator and editor who created the template message, if I’m not mistaken. All of those edits seem to amount to the “cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies” that is required for that template message to be removed.

Any advice on how to remove the first template message on "a close connection" would also be appreciated.

Separately, is there any way to change the name at the top of the article simply to Michael Ruby from Michael Handler Ruby? There doesn’t appear to be any other Michael Ruby in Wikipedia and thus a need for disambigulation. Michael Ruby is the name that appears on all poetry book covers and publications.
