Information icon Hello, Michaelvlawler. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Michael Lawler, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. KidAdSPEAK 22:41, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, Michaelvlawler, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username.

If you choose to keep your current username, please send an email to info-en wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our username policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you wish for your existing contributions to carry over under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" from their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a change of name request.
  3. Your requested new username cannot already be in use. Therefore, please check the list here to see if a name is taken prior to requesting a change of name.
Appeals: If, after reading the guide to appealing blocks you believe you were blocked in error, then you may appeal this block by adding {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice.

Request reason:

I never responded to this previously, but my username should be unblocked.

Decline reason:

Why? Please follow the instructions in the block notice. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 14:23, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

because this is the username I have used for other social media and online accounts. I am Michael Lawler and the edits previously made were strictly biographical and done to populate the page when it was first started over two years ago. I won’t be using the account to update the page, but would like it unblocked.

Decline reason:

Please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so. PhilKnight (talk) 16:41, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Unblock

edit

Per ticket:2023071210007843, you have been unblocked. I note your comment there that you will not edit your own biography. Thank you for that, but please beware that our conflict-of-interest guidelines apply on all articles, not just your biography. So you are also strongly discouraged from editing content about yourself on any other article (subject to very limited exceptions). Happy editing. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 22:28, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

And a brief explanation of the process here, for any members of the press or other non-Wikipedians. This account's block, imposed in 2021, was for editing under the name of a well-known individual without verifying that identity. This is, essentially, a "not-for-cause" block: The user is welcome to create a new account with a non-problematic username, or, if they remedy the issue by verifying their identity, they can be unblocked without further discussion. Correspondence with our Volunteer Response Team has in this case resolved the matter, and so I have unblocked. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 22:37, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
To be even more to the point, the report referenced by Daily News that, quote, "Rep. Mike Lawler has reportedly been banned from Wikipedia after repeatedly editing his own profile", is thus not true. Anyone selecting a user name matching the name of a well-known, living person, gets that account banned, not because they have done something wrong, but to protect that person from impersonation attempts. Once the user has verified their account, this ban is lifted, as has happened in this case. Regards, CapnZapp (talk) 16:17, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
