Speedy deletion of "John Tree"

edit

A page you created, John Tree, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how they are important or significant, and thus why they should be included in an encyclopedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and the guidelines for biographies in particular.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Question for administrator

edit

{{admin help}} I'm writing to ask for help regarding an article I submitted yesterday. The article is about Colonel John Tree. When I wrote it and published it last night, I did not yet have any references to cite, as he told me he would be giving them to me today. The article was immediately tagged for deletion. I contested the deletion, explaining both the notability of Colonel Tree as well as explaining that I was going to add the references today.

I then added the references today after receiving them from Colonel Tree, and noticed that the delete tag was removed. But the article doesn't show up from the wiki home page search, which searching for "John Tree" -- it says the page doesn't exist. But when going directly to the URL for the page itself, it works. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tree)

So I'm just confused as to the actual status of this article. Sorry to bother you about it, but I'm requesting admin help on this to let me know what is the status. I would appreciate confirmation that the delete tag has been removed and that the article is "live" in the wiki database and will be available for search. I know you're busy and that you're a volunteer, so thanks in advance for taking the time to look in to this and getting this article working correctly in wiki.

Kind regards,

The page is definitely a live article, as of now - John Tree.
It it's not yet working in the search / predictive text, that's probably just a caching issue, and it'll sort itself out in a day or so. Sometimes it does take time for the servers to index new pages.
The article is not in any imminent danger of deletion. Thanks for adding to Wikipedia.
If you have further questions, you might like to talk to helpers with this. Best,  Chzz  ►  20:24, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
P.S. I'm not an admin; but you didn't need one for that question.  Chzz  ►  20:24, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • I have searched for it from the main page and found it with no trouble. Chzz is pretty certainly right: it was a caching issue. I don't know whether you know what that means, but basically, to reduce the load on the servers, some actions, such as searching for articles, simply bring up a temporary stored copy of a previous search, rather than repeating the search from scratch. After a while that old cached copy is deleted, and the search is done again. If you searched before that happened you will have got out of date information. Please take a look at WP:GNG and WP:V and then figure out if there are any verifiable, notable secondary sources for Colonel Tree. With all due respect to an outstanding officer, his article does not demonstrate notability at this time. If you can locate any such references, please insert them to avoid this article being deleted. Trusilver 04:17, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Trusilver. I've ready all the WP:GNG and the WP:V articles, as well as this very useful one for military figures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Notability_guide#People and after reviewing other officers currently listed in wiki at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:United_States_Air_Force_officers

And per my original remarks contesting the speedy-delete tag you used, I do believe that Colonel Tree meets the notability guidelines of wikipedia for his accomplishments, rank, and position in the United States Air Force. Would you kindly provide me your explanation of why you believe he does not meet the notability rquirement? Is it that he needs more references to the information I wrote about in the article, or some other thing. Would you please also seek the opinion of other admins/wiki experts as I believe (as does the other wiku user: Chzz) that this article is acceptible. I will gladly work with you and others to improve this article, pending more feedback on how to improve it. I personally know Colonel Tree and want to see his article on wiki endure. And one last think that I'm confused about: your profile says you're no longer an admin, but is that incorrect? Are you still an admin? Thanks for all your help, and for what you do as a volunteer to help wiki "be all it can be." Regards, Milvetdem (talk) 14:19, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am not an administrator. A better measure of notability for an officer would probably be WP:SOLDIER. Could you take a look at it and give me a rationale on which notability requirement Colonel Tree meets? Also a few more points of general housekeeping. Copyright is a very big deal to us, and images uploaded have to be correctly tagged. Please take a look at the discussion page for this article and add the necessary information for the author and source of the images. Take care of this as quickly as possible, because they have already been hit with proposed deletion tags and will be deleted within seven days without corrective action. Please also note the photograph of Colonel Tree himself, you recorded yourself as the author and source of the photograph... as the caption says it was taken at the Pentagon, I'm not sure this is accurate... please change the information to the correct source if applicable. (Please note that photos taken by the US military are automatically in the public domain... it just needs to be correctly tagged. If you aren't sure how to do this, let me know and I will help you with it.) Anything you need, please contact me. I would be happy to help any way I can to ensure that the article remains. Thanks, Trusilver, for your helpful reply. I added all the source content to the photos that were tagged for deletion, and fixed the photo of Colonel Tree. Good catch on that. It was his official photo from the Pentagon, and I am not author. So that's been updated as well. As for notability, I reviewed the wp:soldier case you provided and I'll review it with Colonel Tree when I get a chance. He did command an Air Force Squadron which deployed to Iraq, as well as he was the officer in charge of all linguists during the Operation Uphold Democracy campaign in Haiti in 1994. He was one of two officers in the entire department of defense who could speak both French and Haitian Creole fluently, and he led a team of military linguists assigned to the Joint Task Force and the United Nations Mission in Haiti, for which he was highly decorated. In my mind, these already make him notable for Wiki, but I'll check with him and get back to you if there's more. Thanks again for your efforts and help. Let me know if you see anything else with the article that needs fixing. And it seemed like the article in 3 hidden categories dealing with deletion. How do I get the article out of those hidden categories?

The guidelines are just guidelines, there is nothing concrete about them. I've seen enough that I'm not going to send the page to WP:AFD, but that doesn't mean someone else won't. I've made one modification on the photo of Colonel Tree, just modifying the license with a standard USAF tag. Don't worry too much about the catergories, those will be cleared automatically.
