Anti-vandalism

Hi I just joined Wikipedia yesterday, and I realised just how much I loathe vandalism. I've decided to become a kind of part-time unofficial vandalism fixer, and I have a question which I thought I should ask an administrator...I was wondering, when you put a warning (template or otherwise) on a non-member's talk page, is there any guarantee that they read it? I have used Wikipedia for a long time without being a member, and I had never even heard of a talk page! Thanks for your help, (Mj92 06:29, 24 February 2007 (UTC))

No, there is no guarantee. It might be a AOL proxy, where the IP changes with the with every edit. Or the person might just ignore the new message bar. In those cases the next user of the IP will pick up the message. But experience has shown that many do receive their messages and a lot of simple vandalism stops once people realise they are watched. Personally I don't warn for IP vandalism when it relates to actions several hours back and the IP is no longer in current use to avoid annoying the next user. Hint: check the contributions. One act of vandalism will often unearth a string of actions.

On the other hand, please balance vandalfighting with content work, preferably on non-contentious subjects. It relaxes and puts things into perspective.

Invitation

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us.
