Kiev Today

edit

I've created a sub-section for this. See here.

I would be glad to assist you with that but my English is not really good, as you can see ;) so I will proceed in lurking mode, which is familiar for you :)) --pavlosh 8 July 2005 17:29 (UTC)
Hi pavlosh. Thanks for your interest! If you want, feel free to insert the text in either Russian or Ukrainian and I would be able to translate it into English. As I mentioned somewhere before, I haven't lived in Kiev for 10 years (although I have visited it several times), so you probably know modern Kiev much better than I do. It would be great if you could add something about the people - what they like to do (did it change since the 90s?), new places of interest that opened (new opera, theater, whatever), information about the new "microbuses" that are doing better than the public yellow busses, and so on. :) -- mno July 8, 2005 17:35 (UTC)
Hi mno! OK, I will try to do "my best" :)
As for now:
  • No new opera
  • Theaters - there is more than 20 (someabout 23: 5 "academic" and 17+ municipal). Regretfully I'm not the expert in that…
  • People spend much more time in cafe, restaurant, night club (it's not that "night clubs" that was in "90s") just for dancing
--pavlosh 8 July 2005 18:16 (UTC)
I actually meant this list (opera, museum, theater) as a general example so that something small doesn't get listed. I like your last point, about people spending more time in Cafe, etc. That's something that's definitely "modern Kiev".

Hi, I've edited the picture in your nomination (Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/BlackSea near Soci) to correct the sloping horizon. Do you support the editeed version? Enochlau 02:47, 17 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Looks like it was taken just recently. The quality really is amazing. Of course, probably that is because the image size has been reduced to increase the quality. But still, amazing. -- mno 21:42, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
No it is not because of reduced size. Did you check the link to the 9M pixel scan at Image:Prokudin-Gorskii-19-v2.png. Prokudin-Gorskii was probably using a large format camera so he had plenty of resolution - the trick is in his experimentation with emulsion linearity to get acurate colour reproduction. And more particular his use of three exposures for each colour filter, which limited him to fairly static subjects. If you look carefully, some of the images have registration problems.
There is also a fair bit of skill in digitally recombining the plates to get effective reproductions. To see the raw negatives and recombined images for Black Sea picture go to this link at LOC -- Solipsist 22:20, 23 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Map of Kiev raions

edit

Hi Mno. Nice to meet a dedicated Kiev developer. Regarding the map you added there: unfortunately, it doesn't reflect the river - which is rather important in understanding the city's subdivision. Would you "split" the map with the Dnieper following the respective raion limits line? Ukrained 19:19, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ukrained, I've made an image as you have asked. It's available here: Image:Kiev_map_numbers.png I can provide some other versions, as you need, also. So just ask ;) Cheers. mno 04:52, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Kiev Raion Maps

edit

Hi mno! I've just created a Template:Infobox Kiev Subdivision and would like to have some maps with the raions highlighted, something on the lines of Media:Kiev map english.png. I see you are more experienced in creating map files to Wikipedia (Template:Infobox Kiev Subdivision, Media:Kiev metro map a3.png) and I also have no programs that would allow me to do that. So, if it will not be any trouble to you, can I ask you to please draw them? —dima/s-ko/ 22:26, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey Dima, sure, not a problem. I was meaning to redraw all the maps I drew anyways, as they're not _all_ that great :) -- mno 23:35, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks, that will help a lot. I have just started to renovate Podil and would like to greatly expand it, would you like to participate (if it is not too much work for you already)? BTW, what program do you use to draw the maps? I have Inkscape by am horrible at drawing with it... —dima/s-ko/ 23:55, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I use Paint Shop Pro. People would probably yell at me that it sucks, but I don't think it's too bad. What's important is the fact that I've been using it since version 4 (it's at v 10 now) and know it very well.
Do you need any specific help, or are you just looking for input into the article? Funny, but I was also considering doing a lot to it a few days ago :) -- mno 01:31, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see. I was looking for more input into the article, like history (perhaps even a History of Podol article because of the large amount of info on the topic...), elaborate more on the neighbourhood's architecture and attractions, etc. Thanks, —dima/s-ko/ 22:38, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
On a different topic, do you think that any of these images that I took are fit for WP:FP? I see you have some experience with images and would like to know your opinion. —dima/s-ko/ 23:17, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Dima, I've looked over your photos; there are some that are very interesting. For example, Image:Chicago_River_from_Suntimesd.JPG, Image:Kievview2007.jpg, Image:LimmatZurich d.JPG (this one's very good!), Image:SophiaBelltower.JPG. Perhaps, we can try to go for FA with the latter two, esp the Zurich one. The Kiev one would have been great, except that the detail isn't there, just a general view. I am not sure about the Chicago one, as I don't see anything particularly exciting in it, although the river does create some kind of line that brings everything together. You can always try to put a picture forward and see where it goes. I'm by no means an expert :)
I am currently working on a new map of Kiev. Do you have any good maps that show where the boundaries of the raions are? I have a relatively decent satellite photo from Google Maps that I stitched together from many shots, but it needs to be coloured over and outlined now. I also want to lay the metro stations along the streets (I tried doing this before, but couldn't get a map that was correct, and the different versions contradicted each other - and as I don't have an actual street map of Kiev, it's difficult to guess where is what from above :)). -- mno 19:23, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks. I will look through my other images to see if any are PF worthy, but I might put Image:LimmatZurich d.JPG for WP:FP. How about Image:St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.JPG? It was not on commons, but it is the full version of Image:St.MichaelsGoldenDomedCathedral.JPG that you cropped.
I don't particularly have any good maps, or they are all too big to scan... Here is an online map of Kiev: [1] of Kiev, but it doesn't work now (at least for me). Here is another one: [2] (I think it has raion divisions, but I have not looked at it closely). Otherwise I have not come across any good maps of the city. —dima/s-ko/ 22:13, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, yes, go ahead with the Zurich one. The one of St Michael's is good, but like the other Kiev one, it's not sharp enough when you see it at full size. Perhaps resize it to 1024 and sharpen it a bit before you submit it?
In terms of maps, I'm waiting for Google to finally finish Kiev. They are working on Moscow, but it may still be some time. Right now, the Moscow map looks a bit weird with all those numbers everywhere. It's a bit different to do a mapping service for a Western/American culture and for a post-Soviet one :) Regardless, I am using their Kiev satellite photos to draw my version. I know about UAzone, there's also one at kiev2000.com or something like that. It's all done by one company and leased out, some interfaces work better than others. -- mno 22:28, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll go ahead with the Zurich one. But do you know, if the image is uploaded on Commons, does it have to be re-uploaded to Wikipedia in order for it to be featured on Wikipedia? Good luck on drawing the maps, —dima/s-ko/ 03:45, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
No clue about if the image has to be re-uploaded here; I tend to think that yes, because I think you get FP locally for each language on WP, rather than globally for all languages. Not sure though. You should upload to en, submit for FP and then note that the image also exists in commons and ask if you can change the vote to commons pic instead of en pic in your request. -- mno 03:07, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about the delays with the map. I'm currently preparing to go back to university so have a few things to finish before I leave. I'm still working on the map :) ··· MNO (Hi!) 17:56, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's ok, I too have a lot of things to do, so I'm not as active as I was during the summer. —dima/s-ko/ 20:52, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have set up a request to move the page Kiev to Kyiv.

I have outlined four key reasons for doing so in the discussion section of the page.

Looking through the archives, I saw that you had contributed to this page earlier. I would like to hear what you have to say on this topic.

Proposed deletion of File:Kiev map numbers.png

edit

The file File:Kiev map numbers.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned map.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 13:51, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
