Bot

Hi, as in this edit, why does your bot move stub templates up above the categories? I thought they were supposed to go after the categories, so that the stub category comes at the end of the category list.--Kotniski (talk) 14:04, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Kotniski! There is no principled difference, where to put the templates. I randomly looked up some articles, where my bot is not to move the templates (for example). You can see that the templates (in this case - {{Lifetime | 1987 | | Granero, Esteban}}) are at the start of the category list. Consequently, the bot is working correctly. Stubs, spaces

Stubs go after categories as in this edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grundloser_See&diff=prev&oldid=297117506. This is long standing practice - partly to put hte stub category at the end.

Spaces in titles are optional, currently (3 November) the distribution is:

• Spaces in header 3,571,002.
• No spaces in header 9,967,810.

Seeming to imply that editors prefer not to have them.

I do not see any bugs in this edit, sorry. Bot simply changed interwiki (without cosmetic changes). Now about the templates. Any template (whether stub-templates) should be placed after the list of categories, before interwiki links. None of what the established practice, at least here, on English Wikipedia, I do not know (by the way, can you give me a link to the appropriate thread?)

Yes the example is a diff from your bot application. You have added the expression "cosmetic changes" The edits from 18th June do not have this edit summary, many later ones do. Objection to bot edit

I object to this edit in the most strenuous terms. Removing en dash entities makes it harder for other, human, editors to figure out whether the article has been formatted properly or not (hyphen or en dash). Hello! I do not share your point of view. If the bot encounters in article's code &ndash, it replaces it on a hyphen. If the bot encounters in the code &mdash, it replaces it on a dash. Thus, the bot only simplifies the code of the page. It does not affect the appearance of the page (and technically cannot affect). This bug is  Not fixed. Sorry, I must reply. The entities are not for readers. They are for human editors, like me, who go through, character by character, and ensure that MOS standards are being applied correctly. What we humans do must take precedence over what computerized bots do, and it makes my job much harder as an editor, if I have to download a page and hex edit it to find out which character was used: I cannot tell by eyesight, and I'm informed I'm not the only human editor who can't tell. As far as I can tell (except my common sense tells me otherwise), the bot replaced the entities with hyphens, not en dashes. Now, next time I review the article, I will have to put all the en dash entities back in (by hand, as I did the first time), to assure myself and others, as editors, that the correct characters are being output for the reader. And yes, the next time I review the article I will, by hand, check every last error I can find in it.

The bot is making life harder, not easier, for those of us that care about accuracy of output. The idea of "we don't care about human editors because we have bots" is fundamentally antithetical to Wikipedia Principle #3 as elucidated at User:Jimbo_Wales. The word is "you", as in human being, not bot. We humans, not bots, make the encyclopedia work. The second the bots start interfering with my human capabilities to edit the thing, they should all be thrown out: It's a threshold argument I wish you would consider.

The fact that most editors use hyphens when they write at a keyboard is natural, and expected. When I go looking for mistakes that apply to GA or FA, in order to raise an articles quality, I have to know if I'm looking at a mistake, or a proper character to be output. I simply can't tell unless the entity is spelled out. I don't expect editors who write the text to have these details down; I don't do it myself when I write text; I expect to simply fix it when I'm mood to spot these things, and move on. The bot makes me have to go in circles, and takes all the interest out of editing. Since I can't tell by eyesight whether the right or wrong character is used, I will have to give up on correcting these mistakes, and let the whole encyclopedia go to hyphens. No article will make FA then; it's about caring for the article as such.

Recently, an editor used a script to change the en dash entities in the MOS document itself to characters. He was reverted so fast it made my head spin. He promised to never, ever do it again. —Aladdin Sane (talk) 10:22, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia Stories Project

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'm scouring user pages looking for inspiring, motivating and interesting stories of how Wikipedia has affected the lives of people. I'm asking questions like "How has Wikipedia changed your life?", "What's the most interesting story you have about Wikipedia?" and "Has Wikipedia ever surprised you?"

Last year, we used the annual fundraiser as a way to show the world who it is who actually writes Wikipedia. We featured editors from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, United States and England. This campaign was a huge success, resulting in the most financially successful fundraising campaign ever. It was also a campaign that stayed true to the spirit of Wikipedia, educating the public that this free top-5 website is created by volunteers like you and I.

This year we want to highlight more Russian-language Wikipedia editors, so I am in the process of planning a trip to Russia to interview editors.
