It's preemptive anti-Grawp protection -- he seems to like moving featured geography articles. I'm going to put a note on my talk page saying that I'm willing to move any article I've move-protected if the move has been discussed and there is consensus for it. Thanks so much for your very helpful review - I am not sure if I put the location sentence where you wanted it. I also left the quote at the end - not sure if you wanted that moved or not. As well as aiming for a neutral encylcopedia article, I tried to tell a bit of a story and prefer to end it with the quote worth the trip to see this beautifully restored historic treasure than with the NBI report that it is structurally bad. I have printed out the article to read it aloud and the location sentence at the top of the "Names" section is just not working for me. I think it could work as a sentence in History, perhaps by itself before Background or perhaps at the start of Background (although FAC usually jumps on on one sentence paragraphs). I am trying to put it somewhere that goes with your comment: "The location information at the end of Restoration I think should be placed at the top of everything." but am not sure if this what you meant. Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Hey Moni3. I see that you undid what I wrote on the MSD wikipage regarding the Gator Club of Miami and the volunteer work that was done at the Cottage's site. I went to your wiki-userpage and was surprised to see that you are a Gator as well! After undoing what I wrote, I thought you'd be a Seminole! :P Ufgatorman (talk) 17:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Ha! Indeed, I am actually by alma mater a USF Bull, but I work at UF and my family are Gators. Unfortunately, when I was applying to colleges, the Gainesville murders were very hot news and the perpetrator had not yet been caught. Ironically, he finally was arrested a mile away from the USF campus where I thought I was safely tucked away. I'm not trying to WP:OWN Marjory Stoneman Douglas, but I did work on her article to bring it to FA. I don't mind information added to it, but in her 108 years, her writings and her work greatly overshadow the upkeep of the lawn of her cottage. As well, I have to be vigilant about making sure anything added to the article has a citation. I don't want the article ending up in FAR because the quality degraded over time. I understand -- just giving you a hard time. I definitely agree that Marjory's history is quite interesting. I thought that it was really cool that the house was the origin of the Miami Herald. Another thing I learned that was very interesting (and very fortunate) was that the cottage survived many hurricanes over the years. Much of the lawn used to have a house on top of it that got blown away by one of the hurricanes. I understand that her history is much more meaningful than some people volunteering their time to upkeep the property, BUT, I think it's important to note that people have spent their time trying to preserve Marjory's "physical" history; without people's efforts, Marjory would only be known in textbooks (and wikipedia). I would recommend adding a statement about people volunteering their weekend hours to upkeep the property (not necessarily mentioning anything about UF). One of these days I would like to work at UF! Hey Moni, congratulations on bringing Mulholland Drive to FA status! I'm sorry I fell off in terms of providing support and working on that article, but it seems you did just fine anyway, unsurprisingly. I also fully intended to comment during the FAC but it had already been promoted by the time I took a look. I became an admin (completely unexpectedly) a few weeks ago and have been distracted by that and some other relatively trivial Wiki-stuff in the last few weeks. But I just wanted to offer a quick congrats on the FA promotion and thank you for your excellent work on the article. I was happy when you showed up on the article talk page a couple of months ago wanting to work on it, but had no idea you would do such excellent work in such short order. It's a great film that deserves - and now has - a great Wikipedia article.

Re: New York Times citations

Yeah, I checked the talk page first ... I obviously missed the discussion about New York Times links requiring logins at random. I've never had that problem, as long as the URL is simplified as far as possible ... see my thoughts at TonyTheTiger's talk page (and a few sections after that). In March and April, I did a fixup of around 700 New York Times links to make them freely available ... I know a bit of how it works but not everything. I try to get to the NYT articles through Google where possible, as the New York Times search service adds junk to the end of the URL which isn't helpful in a citation, which might be causing the random logons.

Re: the requirement for all online citations to be freely available, frankly that sounds like rubbish to me ... if that was true, then citations with PMIDs wouldn't be allowed and they're used all the time in medical articles. The only time a link to a site requiring registration is not allowed is in the external links section. If a site requires registration or is in PDF format, it is good to state that in the format parameter of citation templates, but those links are certainly not disallowed if they make checking the citation more convenient. I don't hang around FAC and I'm not a heavy content writer ... I'm just a WikiGnome whose been here for a while. I hardly read through policies or participate in the often nauseating discussions about them, because the principles haven't changed one bit in the last 3 years ... the policies have just become more strictly enforced and a minority of vocal editors interpret them to their own ends. Forestation of the Everglades DYK

I didn't mark it as "verified" because the hook is cited to an offline reference, i.e., a print book. That's not a deal-breaker; we use those all the time (I've created those myself ... see Radovich v. National Football League, which depends somewhat on an out-of-print book). Since I didn't actually see the words in a source document I didn't mark it. But be assured someone else will probably take it on good faith a little later ... no one has any reason to think you're making stuff up.

Stubs

I have made them for Dipholis salicifolia, Krugiodendron ferreum (my second rhamnaceae stub after Alphitonia excelsa!) and Ficus aurea, and watch for the others turning blue over the day. Also, I don't think it is Ilex aquifolium but I have no idea which species it is. To be honest, I think all my strengths at Wikipedia are on writing articles and not on knowing how to incorporate images from flickr. Some of the images in the Everglades article are mine. Most of the images in Geography and ecology of the Everglades are mine. I looked at your link to flickr, and some of those images are quite nice. I don't know right now if 1. it's necessary to use more, 2. which ones I might use, or 3. how to put them in the article. I'll take suggestions, for sure.

I hope you don't mind if I ask you a question. I recently read while doing all my research, that Europeans are fascinated with the Everglades. Clearly much more so than my fellow Floridians. Do what you think will be the best, the articles are already good with some nice images. I have never uploaded images from flickr myself but it shouldn't be too hard.

I like the Everglades because, well I just think swamps and mangroves is really fascinating environments. Last summer I went to Honduras and took a trip in a canoe in a mangrove-swamp which was amazing. I hope I can go to the Everglades in the future but I don't have the money right now. But apart from me, I don't know to many people here that share this interest.

Everglades National Park

So, here you go. I missed a word ('Raso', a type of cloth) and the rythm (what rythm?) is horrible, but that's the best I can do. xD Unfortunately, I know about as much on the topic as you do, so I don't think I can expand the article much.

I will try to be more active around here this summer. I've been focusing a lot on the Spanish Wikipedia on the last year and a half, but I miss writing articles here and bickering on the project talk with my good pals. ;) I mostly translate there, it horrifies me how many important articles are missing... But things are looking pretty good now. I'm running for Arbcom this month, and if I get elected (pretty big if there), I'll just examine cases there and focus my article writing here. ^^ Or that's the plan at least...

LGBT sidebars

Hi Moni3. I noticed you've been replacing a bunch of the LGBT sidebars with LGBT footers where the article is not listed in the sidebar. I don't mean to be obnoxious, but I really don't think there's consensus to make those changes on a widespread basis (at the LGBT project talk page, you and one other person supported the idea which was contained deep within a nested discussion, no one else commented on the suggestion). Speaking of the Everglades...

How, Moni, how goes it? I see you've been highly productive lately -- just putting it lightly. :) In doing research for my newest project, Robert Sterling Yard, an early, stuck up conservationist and thorn in everybody's side, I happened to read about the long battle that was the initial proposal for the Everglades National Park, which made me think of you and your toils on the article. Yard apparently opposed the proposal for five long years, making everyone loony because of his incredibly high standards. In the end he caved and supported its creation, but this was a turning point for him as far as his conservationist ideals go. Isn't it funny how things on Wikipedia connect and overlap like spiderwebs? I'm almost afraid what will pop up next; Emily Dickinson was Aldo Leopold's favorite poet? Ahh! Well, hey there. It's going ok. The first Everglades satellite just got promoted, so yay, but the other ones are much longer, so there's much more to work on. I've never heard of Robert Sterling Yard. I was under the impression that Ernest F. Coe, the "grandfather of Everglades National Park" (needs an article), had his own standards that were considered unnecessarily high. He was so stubborn about not budging from them that he almost lost the park several times. In the end, by the time the park was dedicated in 1947, Coe was no longer allowed to work on the park, and was only at the last minute included in the dedication ceremony festivities. Any recommendations when reading And the Band Played On?

The book has been on my to read list, and I finally went out and grabbed a copy. Right now going off the NY Times review I'm going to have to keep tabs on all the various people. I'm also going to try and keep tabs on everything that is said about Dugas based on the talk page discussion. Anything else I should be looking at? I think people need to plan their WikiVacations on a calendar to make sure they're not all gone at the same time. I need to approve these vacations. On a totally unrelated subject, I'm thinking about creating an article called "List of unusual community names in North Carolina" or something like that. Do you think it would fly? Examples: Carolina, Hooker, Index, Minneapolis, Egypt, Republican, Democrat, Bloody Fork, Varmantown, Beverly Hills, and the list goes on. I have a huge library at my fingertips and I can help you out with news stories, specifically the initial ones that were written within 6 months of his attack. I wrote half a peer review of it for an editor who never came back to answer anything I suggested. That's in the article's archives. It might take several months, but it would be completely worth it to do.

Thanks so much. I wish I could say I enjoyed writing it. In the sense that it came out quite fluidly, inspired by a lot of wtf???Ican'tbelievethisshit! kind of anger, the process was almost fun. But the topic is not. If you're not completely depressed and can stand a little bit more of wtf??!! Restoration of the Everglades (article title may be a misnomer the way current events are going) needs another set of eyes, and I recently got a few good suggestions for Geography and ecology of the Everglades. Does JohnBoddie know that the Supreme Court sodomy law case was delisted as an FA several months ago? Bummer. I wish I knew enough about law to tackle that one. I just found out thatHomosexuality is in Good Article Reassessment. What happens in groups has happened to WP:LGBT studies. People are really productive and leave for various reasons, and particularly LGBT articles get a lot of crappy edits to them and lose their integrity. I wish I had time to improve Homosexuality to make sure it stays at GA... I hope they don't delist it before I can get to it in the middle of this massive project here.

What you also start looking for is key phrases and words which pop up in media and then find their origins here. When I was on a gameshow they used the word 'quintessential' in a description of Amanita muscaria, which guess who had placed there a couple of years ago. Hello, I must say I'm very impressed with your work on the Everglades articles - amazing stuff. Are you considering a featured topic afterwards? Because if not, you should be. Though I would advise you that it'd be wise to do something to Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan - otherwise, it'd constitute an "obvious gap", which would fall foul of criterion 1.d). You could get it to GA, but it's basically in Restoration of the Everglades, so just redirect it?
