Welcome

edit

Hi Mothball, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for joining the coolest online encyclopedia I know of. I hope you stick around. You'll probably find it easiest to start with a tutorial of how the wikipedia works, and you can test stuff for yourself in the sandbox. Check out the simplified ruleset. When you're contributing, you'll probably find the manual of style to be helpful, and you'll also want to remember a couple important guidelines.

  1. Write from a neutral point of view
  2. Be bold in editing pages
  3. Use wikiquette.

Those are probably the most important ones, and you can take a look at some others at the policies and guidelines page. You might also be interested in how to write a great article and possibly adding some images to your articles.

Be sure to get involved in the community – you can contact me on my talk page if you have any questions, and you can check out the village pump, where lots of wikipedians hang out and discuss things. If you're looking for something to do, check out the community portal. And whenever you ask a question or post something on a talk page, be sure to sign your name by typing 4 tildes like ~~~~. Always sign the talk page, never the articles.

Again, welcome! It's great to have you. Happy editing!--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| r 3 $ |-| t |-|) 10:02, 4 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Welcome from the Wikichemists

edit

Hey, Mothball (or should I call you naphthalene?), welcome! I'm always glad to see another chemist starting to do edits on Wikipedia, and I saw your upload of benzhydrol. Thanks!

I wanted to mention the reason for my reverts on the list of organic compounds, just so you don't get paranoid. When we finally get around to listing all of the organics we have articles on (probably over 1000), this page is going to be very long. In order to keep things under control we decided to maintain several separate lists: list of inorganic compounds, list of minerals, list of biomolecules and list of drugs. Things like DNA belong on the biomolecules list, especially when they don't have a definite chem structure, as with DNA. Chlorophyll is probably a borderline case, but it is almost exclusively studied for its biochemistry, not its chemistry. See the introductory paragraph on list of organic compounds for details.

If you want help finding your way around the chemistry pages, Portal:Chemistry is a good place to start, you can also take a look at a short list on my user page. I would particularly encourage you to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemicals (WP:Chem) and our worklist, which is (I believe) the most extensive on Wikipedia. The recent featured article (FA) on acetic acid was a product of this group. You may prefer to work on your own, but WP:Chem is good for coordinating activity, to make sure that we don't duplicate our efforts and that we standardise on certain formats. You will find us a very friendly and supportive group, things like edit wars are never seen here.

A minor thing- normally we only sign with four tildes when we leave a comment on a talk page. If you contribute to an article you don't do that, rather the attribution is found through the page history.

I do hope you'll stay and decide to join us. Welcome, Walkerma 05:21, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sir Frederick Mappin Building

edit

Thanks for your contributions to this article. I am concerned that the image you uploaded, Image:Uni precinct mappin.gif, may be a copyright violation - it looks as though you have highlighted the building on the University's own map. If so, we need to remove the image from Wikipedia. Warofdreams talk 10:39, 19 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

No problem, it's now been deleted. Warofdreams talk 16:03, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Haslington Entry

edit

I saw the entry on Haslington (which is where I was born and lived until 1961), and discovered it had been "taken over" by some people who claimed it was a kingdom of some sort. I changed it back and have added various bits to it, but I've now discovered that you are planning to expand various entries which I've already tinkered with. My apologies if I've stepped out of line with this. I hope it hasn't clashed too much with what you were planning to do yourself. I've also added an entry for Haslington Hall in the List of Historic houses in England#Cheshire. Once again, sorry if this has pre-empted anything you wanted to do, or if I have broken protocol here. I only discovered you had a special interest in it now. ddstretch 00:26, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Questionnaire

edit

In an effort to assess the progress of Wikiproject Cheshire, it has been decided to send a questionnaire to members. To answer, please copy this questionnaire and paste your answers on the answer page. While participation is, of course, not compulsory, thoughtful answers will help the project to develop and improve. Thank you.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer:
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer:
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer:
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer:
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer:
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer:
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer:
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer:
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer:

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 03:03, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
