Class

edit

I replied over on the helpdesk, but I'll copy it here, for your convenience;

Good afternoon, Mr. Purcell. Yes, Wikipedia can certainly be used in your tuition, however there are a couple of very important points;
  • Users should never share user accounts. It's bad practice to share passwords, and doing so can result in blocks; so I hope you can use the opportunity to teach your students to each create their own user account, to keep their password to themselves, and to log in under their own username to edit. Note, the user names can be almost anything you like (nicknames, or whatever), and indeed real names are best avoided.
  • Please create "User space draft" pages, instead of making a live article. That way, the class can experiment as much as they like, without various problems with a live article being subject to deletion, and so forth. You can make such pages with the link WP:USERSPACEDRAFT.

  Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Aquatic Warbler, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you. It is very important that your class members use separate accounts. This first edit by a class member shows why. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:10, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please read again what you were told in answer to your initial question:

  This is your only warning; if you create an inappropriate page again, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Please, please STOP and LISTEN to the advice. Do NOT create live pages, and do NOT share the account. If you continue to do so, your account will be blocked.  Chzz  ►  12:18, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please read WP:NOSHARE. If you continue to violate Wikipedia's rules, your account will be blocked from editing. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:20, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've added a further reply on User talk:Chzz#Thank You too. If anyone has mis-advised you, that it is OK to share accounts in this way, then I'm sorry, but, they made an error.  Chzz  ►  12:23, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Simple Wikipedia

edit

Hi, If they use http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page their edits are less likely to get reverted so quickly. As a bonus they will find there are more articles that can be created. The main Wikipedia has so many articles that it is difficult to think of new ones that will not get flagged for deletion almost immediately for non-notability. I notice that Simple Wikipedia has no article yet for Tidworth. Could be a good place to start.--Aspro (talk) 12:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

On the other-hand, I wouldn't fancy trying to persuade school children to use the reduced vocabulary recommended by the Simple English Wikipedia... let alone follow their other language rules. I would say stick to the normal Wikipedia but just make sure you follow the guidance for younger editors. Yaris678 (talk) 12:31, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rules!

edit

Please, Mr Purcell, explain to your class that rules are necessary in all walks of life, and that Wikipedia has its own set of rules, which we must stick to.

It's a good teaching opportunity - they must surely know about 'obeying rules'? Then teach them how to set up an account, and how to find out about more rules and 'good practice'. Help them learn by using user space drafts. Pesky (talkstalk!) 12:25, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ahhhh, apparently "A pupil swore on that man's chat board." Interesting that it was combined with a semierudite lecture on human rights. Not what I would have expected from a class of 11-year-olds, in fact. Also, I cannot understand the assumption that every editor is a man .... Pesky (talkstalk!) 12:54, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I hope that you and your class have had a worthwhile education today, learning that neither you nor they can blindly ignore rules. If you keep inventing stories about permission from Jimmy Wales, your block from editing is likely to be extended to prevent you telling fibs on your talk page. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:04, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Obvious troll is obvious, really.-- ObsidinSoul 13:10, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Sorry. A pupil swore on that man's chat board. He has been given a detention. So It is all okay to unblock me now and so I can get back to teaching my class. Thanks very much for unblocking me when you get round to it! MrPurcellsClass (talk) 12:48, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Decline reason:

See WP:NOSHARE, WP:NLT and WP:VAND. Multiple editors using a single account is not allowed, and frankly, one cannot distinguish editors who use the same account. Users are responsible for their own account though, so in case of vandalism an account is blocked. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 12:51, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

No, we didn't on purpose. Please read the above message which says "declined" [stwalkerster|talk] 12:57, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
