Music sourcing
editHi Nachomamaz, I saw that you've cited AllMusic a couple times at List of post-hardcore bands. AllMusic prose biographies are considered reliable sources for genres. However, everything in the sidebar (including listed genres) is considered unreliable because they come from a variety of sources, including user-generated sources and databases. You can read more about music sources (reliable and unreliable) at WP:ALBUMS/SOURCES. Woodroar (talk) 02:24, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the information. Can you provide me a list of which artists were referred to this? I am trying to use the biographies and not the side lists Nachomamaz (talk) 02:25, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
- Currently, The Kinison is cited to https://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-kinison-mn0000102485. Poison the Well was originally cited to https://www.allmusic.com/artist/poison-the-well-mn0000298225/biography, which does have a biography section, but it doesn't mention "post-hardcore", only the sidebar does. I changed the Poison the Well source to Metal Injection. Woodroar (talk) 02:47, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
Ok thank you for the heads up! I will dig deeper into the Kinison and add a more reliable resource. And thank you for correcting Poison the Well’s reference for me. Nachomamaz (talk) 02:48, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for your additions to Wikipedia...just some advice
editThank you for helping expand the List of post-hardcore bands! Your edits reminded me that this list needed some work because the last time I expanded it was in 2017. For future reference, please include the date of the article (if available in the article) in the citation you add. Example citation:[1] or read Wikipedia:Citing sources if you have any other questions. Also, avoid using sources that say the band is "influenced by post-hardcore" or say "the band uses post-hardcore elements." Look for sources that are more explicit in calling the band post-hardcore. For example, "post-hardcore band My Chemical Romance," "My Chemical Romance is a post- hardcore band", or "My Chemical Romance is one of the leading bands in post-hardcore." It can be hard to find sources that explicitly call bands a genre, especially the smaller bands. Just know that this isn't a complete list and doesn't need to have every post-hardcore band possible. If you can't find a source for a band, that's fine just move to the next one. Again, thank you for your contributions. I look forward to helping improve this list with you and I hope my advice helps. Keep up the great work and I hope you are liking it here on Wikipedia! Bowling is life (talk) 02:32, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice! I will continue reviewing more detailed references. I believe this list should have a good amount of artists as this is the same exact list I used back in 2008 when I first got into the genre. Although not as popular in todays radio industry, I do believe it’s important to have as many options available for discoverers and listeners. I appreciate it Nachomamaz (talk) 02:37, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Also, I am using the dates from the article but I must be putting them in the reference incorrectly. I use the “access-date” command for the date in which the article was published. I will use the date published command instead moving forward Nachomamaz (talk) 02:39, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Nachomamaz: You can use the both the date "(date of the article)" and access date "(when you accessed the article)" in the citation like this:
|first=|last=|url=|title=|work=|date=|access-date=}}
For the "access date", use the date you found the article. For the "date", look for a date within the article itself. The date is usually next the author of the article. Some sources, like AllMusic for example don't have dates within the article. In those cases, just an access date will be enough. To remember that, when you look at the citation you created after you saved you edit, it will say retrieved next to the access date because that's when you retrieved the article. I hope that clears things up. Bowling is life (talk) 02:49, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Ok great yeah that makes way more sense. I will clean up my submissions that I have added and change the access date command to the date command for correct referencing Nachomamaz (talk) 02:51, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- In case you haven't found this already: in Preferences > Gadgets, there should be a checkbox to use "ProveIt". You copy and paste the source URL into ProveIt and it automatically fills out the title, author, publication, publication date, access date, etc. Basically all the fields it can figure out. It's not perfect but it makes adding sources a lot easier! You can read more about it at Wikipedia:ProveIt. Woodroar (talk) 03:35, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Woodroar: I didn't even know that was a thing. That would make large edits less tedious. Thank you! Bowling is life (talk) 04:25, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- Glad to help! Woodroar (talk) 11:46, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
