{{Interlanguage link}}

edit

Please use the Template:Interlanguage link template, or {{ill}} (shortcut) as it is more commonly known.

Instead of [[:de:Hiltrud Schwetje|Hiltrud Hampel]] please use {{ill|Hiltrud Schwetje|de}}, which renders as Hiltrud Schwetje [de].[a] This has a couple of advantages:

Happy editing!

Peaceray, I am heartily grateful to you for having spared your time to cordially inform me of instructive tips to better engage in the editing work. You truly saved my day:)
But here is still a huge headache that is lingering on me despite your guides. Somehow my interlanguage links don’t work properly in most articles. I do follow the simplest method you have presented, but anyhow the articles don’t show the expected outcomes.
I would be delighted to hear from you soon. NamelessAngel1998 (talk) 15:26, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi NamelessAngel1998! I will provide examples for the syntax for {{ill}}.
  • For the most simple use where the English title will be the same as the foreign language title, use {{ill |<article name> |<language code>}}.
    Example: {{ill|Johann Friedrich Leopold Duncker|de}}
    generates: Johann Friedrich Leopold Duncker [de]
  • For when the English title differs from the foreign language title, use {{ill |<enwiki article name> |<language code> |<other language article> }}.
    Example: {{ill|Basilica of Santa Maria Nuova|it|Basilica di Santa Maria Nuova}}
    generates: Basilica of Santa Maria Nuova [it]
  • If you want to link to two or more foreign languages, then repeat |<language code> |<other language article> if it is different or use |<language code> || if the names are the same.
    Example: {{ill|Kuno von Lichtenstein|de||pl||ru|Куно фон Лихтенштейн}}
    generates: Kuno von Lichtenstein [de; pl; ru]
    • Note the double pipes between de & pl, & pl & ru, because the name Kuno von Lichtenstein is the same in de, en, & pl. Technically, you could put the same value for the name in each empty slot, but why bother?
  • For an entity in Wikidata & there is no other language article, or you do not want to link to that language article, use {{ill |<article name> |wd=<qid> |short=yes}}.
    Example: {{ill| Berry Campbell |wd=Q100324399 |short=yes}}
    generates: Berry Campbell  [d]
    • Note that I use |short=yes because I think omitting it looks ugly.
      Example: {{ill| Berry Campbell |wd=Q100324399}}
      generates: Berry Campbell  [Wikidata]
OK, now let's discuss the lt (link text) & italics parameters.
  • Use italics or italic for major works or species.
    Example 1: {{ill|Tylototriton gaowangjienensis|wd=Q130813397|italics=yes|short=yes}}
    generates: Tylototriton gaowangjienensis [d]
    Example 2: {{ill|Olympe, une femme dans la Révolution|fr|italic=yes}}
    generates: Olympe, une femme dans la Révolution [fr]
  • Use lt when the actual target article name that you want to display is different that what you want to display in the article.
    Example: {{ill|lt=Akira Nakamura|Akira Nakamura (entrepreneur)|ja|中村明 (実業家)}}
    generates: Akira Nakamura [ja]
  • You can also use lt when you need partial italics in the displayed redlink.
    Example 1: {{ill|Captain Kathryn Janeway birthplace monument|lt=''Captain Kathryn Janeway'' birthplace monument|wd=Q113495085|short=yes}}
    generates: Captain Kathryn Janeway birthplace monument [d]
    Example 2: {{ill|Soleil (Françoise Hardy album)|lt=''Soleil'' (Françoise Hardy album)|fr|Soleil (album)}}
    generates: Soleil (Françoise Hardy album) [fr]
I hope this is helpful. Peaceray (talk) 17:58, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Peaceray, I can come up with no exact and adequate words to express how thankful I am to you for your quick and detailed response for all your busyness.
I have reviewed the lengthy instructions carefully again and applied the uppermost mentioned simplest method, but sadly it failed again…
I did put the letters as {ill|title name|en}} so that the English article can surely be linked, but only a wrongly linked combination of two letters “en” appear. NamelessAngel1998 (talk) 19:45, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
The language code should be for the foreign language Wikipedia, not English (en). Peaceray (talk) 22:40, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
