Look, all the sources call it a "destroyer". And, I quote, the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth—what counts is whether readers can verify that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source (see below), not whether editors think it is true. I would like to add, the terms frigate and destroyer are purely arbitrary on a country-by-country basis. Many post-World War 2 US "destroyers" are classified as cruisers by other countries, for example, and the new Zumwalt class being equivalent in tonnage to a WW2 Heavy Cruiser, and rather larger than the contemporary Ticonderoga class cruiser. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.172.210.153 (talk) 22:11, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
The sources are verifiably wrong. Calling this vessel a destroyer is a gross exaggeration at best.
- True this class of ship should be listed as a frigate or corvette but not a Destroyer. De Grasse (talk) 04:18, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Displacement
editThis class is smaller than the Post World War II built Babr class, a modified Allen M.Sumner Class that displaces 2,200 tons as well as China's, India's, the US's and the UK's destroyer classes in service today.
As noted above this vessel is significantly smaller than a typical destroyer since it displaces 1,400 tons and is 94 meters long. It could perhaps be more appropriately described as a multi-purpose frigate or guided missile frigate rather than a Destroyer or Guided missile destroyer.
Modern destroyers typically displace roughly 3,500 to 9,000 tons. The UK's Type 45 destroyer for example displaces 7,205 tons light load, 8,092 tons full load and a US Arleigh Burke class destroyer 8,315 - 9,200tons full load. The aforementioned World War II era Allen M.Sumner Class displace 2,200 tons standard, 3,515 tons full load.
Based on the ship's configuration, armament, layout, size and intended mission it would be best described as a multi-purpose corvette, frigate or guided missile frigate and a fairly small one by modern standards. A modern MEKO 360 frigate displaces 3,360 tons fully loaded, a MEKO 200 3,400 tons fully loaded and an older Kortenaer class frigate of the Dutch Navy 3,500 tons standard, 3,800 tons full load.
Based on all this evidence this vessel has been incorrectly classified as a destroyer.
