Feedback - Week 4 Assignments

Hi Nicole, Nice job with edits to the page and in linking those ideas to my talk page (and your fellow group members' talk pages - Alex just came on board so from her on out make sure to also include him). In terms of feedback on the potential topics. Gerascophobia seems problematic from the standpoint of a non-existent literature (if I used gerontophobia there were 8 published articles - most quite dated). If you can't access reliable and valid information about the topic your ability to contribute will be limited. Both alogia and pica seem workable. Although there already is a decent structure present for both there also is a substantial literature that you should be able to consult to learn more about both and ultimately write about and share that knowledge in expanding the articles. In general, it will be easier for you to focus on a topic that is stub-quality or weakly developed (or perhaps hasn't even been written about at all). From the handout in this week's recommended readings on choosing an article:

Advice for choosing articles to work on

• Choose a term that is well established in the discipline, but only weakly represented on Wikipedia. The best choice is a topic where a lot of literature is available, but isn't covered extensively on Wikipedia.
• Scope: Look for topics that are specific and narrow enough to be manageable, but broad enough that sufficient sources exist to write a solid, sizable article.
• Gravitate toward "stub" and "start" class articles. These articles have only 1-2 paragraphs of information and are in need of expansion.
• Before creating a new article, spend 15-20 minutes searching related topics on Wikipedia to make sure your topic isn't already covered. Often, an article may already exist under another name or be a subsection of a broader article.

What to avoid for student projects

• Trying to improve articles on very broad topics (e.g. Law) or articles that are already of high quality on Wikipedia
• Trying to improve articles on topics that are highly controversial, e.g. Global Warming, Abortion, Scientology, etc. (Start a sub-article instead.)
• Working on something only sparsely covered by literature

Feedback - Week 5 Assignments

Excellent work! You are really getting the hang of editing (including providing constructive suggestions on the talk page along with edit summaries), linking and referencing. You did provide a reference but it was from about.com. I encourage you to look again at what is meant by reliable sources (i.e., when you write your article you will want to rely almost exclusively on peer-reviewed, published literature which can be found on the library website using EBSCOhost and/or PsycINFO). For the Classification section I would say that some general rewording of the sentences would be very helpful, especially in the last senctence. An addiction and a compulsion are different things, but it was hard to tell exactly what you were trying to accomplish with that sentence. If you could give an example of how an addiction to exercise and someone who just has a compulsion to exercise are different I think it would be very helpful in making that point clearer to the reader.

In Signs and Symptoms, the main thing is describing what "detrimental" means. If there is any research that can give a better definition of detrimental or time/intensity qualification into what makes it detrimental that would be very helpful since detrimental can be taken to be something different by different people. Possibly in this section talk about what type of exercise(s) the person does or if it varies between the individual suffering from the addiction.

Finally, I think comorbidity and causes could be combined into one section because the presence of an eating disorder seems like it could be a cause of suffering from the addiction. However, all in all, I think that the article was well written for a first draft and after some minor editing of those sections and punctuation errors it will work great.

Self Group Critique

After looking at another group's article and thinking about what we should add to ours I have come up with a few suggestions. First, I think that we should really try to include a picture in some section of our article, however I am not quite sure where exactly the best fit for that would be. Secondly, I don't know if anyone has looked up the DSM-IV definition for pica, but it would be a good reference for the symptoms section. Professor Tompkins might even have one we could borrow in order to accomplish that. Finally, I think we are just going to need to go over the article a few more times in order to make sure that we are not being repetitive in any areas.

All in all though, I think we have a solid start to the article and after a little work it will be a lot more complete than when we began. Oh and I will take the responsibility of making sure the intro sounds good and well thought out because right now it seems like it is choppy to me.

Reflective Essay

In doing this wikipedia project I would say the first major challenge that I faced was in learning how to use the wikipedia website and become familiar with the terminology and how editing works. Once that was easier for me I felt like things began to run much smoother, although I was never able to becom ecompletely comfortable with how to use wikipedia correctly. As a group, I felt like we were able to delegate tasks that each person needed to do fairly easily so on a whole that part of the project was a success. Since our topic was more highly talked about than some peoples, gathering research was not a difficult part of the assignment. However, gathering journal articles that were related to the history of Pica (my section to write about) proved to me more difficult. What I seemed to find was people talking about the symptoms and less of how people discovered it to be a disorder. All in all, I would say I learned a lot about the eating disorder Pica, but in the end I feel like it would have been easier for me to write a research paper than have to use the wikipedia website.
