Introduction

Hi Neelix,

My name is Christopher Gerth and I am a student in Molecular Biology (online) at JHU, section 82. I am writing to you as suggested by our assignment. I am a little confused by the term ambassador. Are you working with JHU to provide a contact ? Or are you just a general ambassador for Wikipedia ? My email is: prokovief@aol.com

Education Program technical update, February 2014

We've started working on "editor campaigns", a system that we expect will eventually be able to replace our current Education Program extension (and be useful for many other purposes as well). The early work with that project will focus on a system for signup up new editors for editing campaigns (such as courses, but also edit-a-thons, Wiki Loves Monuments, etc.). Because of that, progress will be slow on the current course page system. However, we have several improvements that should be available within the next few weeks.

Anyone can edit the main text of course pages

As part of the effort to make course pages behave more like regular wiki pages, we've enabled editing of course pages by anyone. Users who currently have the right to edit courses will have access to all the fields (so that they can change the start/end dates, and change the enrollment token). Users who currently cannot edit courses will be able to edit only the "page text" portion. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Simplified course editing interface

We've considerably simplified the interface for editing course pages, removing the options to rename courses. Changing the title of a course would also move the course page, creating confusion and leading to a number of bugs. Several other parts of the course editing interface were not very useful, so we've removed them to make it easier on newcomers. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Additional Notifications

Two students participating in the Facebook Open Academy mentorship program are currently working on additional Notifications for course pages. For the first of these, users will be notified whenever someone else adds them to a course.

Once again, if you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Sweden list

Greeting, Neelix, and looking forward to revisiting this. I certainly like what you've done so far. Now let's think ahead.

For starters, it looks like we have some arithmetic issues. The introduction to the list says 336 total municipalities - 49 Swedish or bilingual, 289 Finnish. That itself is slightly problematic, since 289 + 49 = 338, not 336. But then, Municipalities of Finland tells us there are 320 municipalities. This is unsurprising - the number peaked at 603 in 1942 and has gradually diminished. So we're going to have to make some numerical adjustments. Looking at the equivalent lists on other Wikipedias, it seems the eliminated municipalities were not Swedish or bilingual, so it's simply a case of saying 320 total, 49 bilingual, 271 Finnish.

I'm receptive to the idea of including the Sami. The four bilingual municipalities are Enontekiö, Inari, Sodankylä and Utsjoki. Would we maybe create a second table below the existing one to include these? That way we don't mess with the codes or the "Swedish-speaking percentage" column.

In terms of the title, List of not unilingually Finnish municipalities of Finland would be a little more concise. - Biruitorul Talk 20:37, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

I fixed the numbers. As to the table format and title, I respectfully disagree, but I will not try to stand in your way. Feel free to modify as you see fit; I'm sure the result will be satisfactory. - Biruitorul Talk 14:23, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
My pleasure, and I do hope this makes it to the Main Page soon. But to tell you the truth, I have no idea for sure. What is clear from the table is that there are up to five municipalities that have under 6% Swedes or Sami: Helsinki (5.9% Swedish), Turku (5.4%), Lohja (3.5%), Vantaa (2.7%) and Sodankylä (1.6% Sami). We know the under 6% rule holds for Lohja, and we know the 3000-inhabitant rule applies in Vantaa and Turku. That leaves Sodankylä and Helsinki.
Sodankylä only has around 140 Sami, well under 3000, so the obvious conclusion would be that the under 6% rule was applied in Sodankylä.
Helsinki has around 36,000 Swedes, so well above 3000. However, the percentage of Swedes was above 6% as recently as a few years ago, so my cautious assumption is that the under 6% rule goes for Helsinki as well. - Biruitorul Talk 21:49, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Notification of automated file description generation

Your upload of File:Campolo.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! infobox

Hi Neelix, I want to add an infobox to my article minigene that I am creating for my JHU molecular biology course. I looked through the available templates, but don't see any that fit the bill. I want to create a template and have it approved and use it. The general category would be in biology with a sub-heading of "gene".

Hi Neelix, I am tyring to figure out how to add an infobox to my article for molecular biology. It seems I am supposed to use an existing template, but there are none that match my category. How do I go about creating one ?

Hi Neelix, the infobox template worked fine. I was wondering how to take my page from the sandbox to an actual entry. I started an article on the topic of minigene previously, but it was deleted because of lack of information. I think we now have a good article and it will pass, at least as a stub for right now. Will the previously deleted article cause us any problems ? Deacon C (talk) 20:29, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Neelix, they want to delete my infobox (which is still under construction) in my sandbox. I don't understand as I thought this was a legitimate place to put it. I then copied the modified code and placed it into templates, thinking this would make it official; now they want to delete this ,too. Where is a template under development supposed to go ? There are no other templates that satisfy my needs, but I believe that this template may be used as a model for a gene ontology project by another (i.e., it may become widely used) so I am trying to be extra-thoughtful about its design. What to do ?

Hello, Neelix. You have new messages at Neelix's talk page.

Thanks you for your help in defending the infobox. I don't want to belabor the point, but what did I do to make this happen ? I thought I was following the rules; is the thing that got "upset" a bot or a real person ? What should I have done ?

The problem here is that this is both an article and a research article. When you are the first to write an article on a subject, you begin to think, "Oh wait, what if this happens ? Hence, my comments about gene ontology. It's nice to have someone as an intermediary, someone who knows we are experimenting and won't just leave an abandoned stub, but are trying to improve it.

Canada International Film Festival

Hi Neelix. You may note that I've added a notability tag atop Canada International Film Festival. This is festival that seems to pop up a lot, in my experience, with more marginal works. The festival clearly processes a lot of films on an annual basis, hands out awards, but as someone who knows the film scene in Canada rather well, even I've had trouble finding any reliable sources about it. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 19:00, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

  • I'm not much of a deletionist, unless I feel the article's been created as a promotional tool. And that's certainly not what I associate with a "Neelix." So if you'd like I can downgrade the tag to something else 'ominous'. But this is a weird festival, from what (little) I know. I think it's sort of like a vanity press version of an international film fest. The article as it stands now may give it undue weight. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 23:11, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Well, all the refs are passing mentions, that a film one an award there. I don't see any substantial coverage about the festival, as one does with notable film festivals. Am I missing something? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 02:01, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Geography of Christmas?

I don't see why you changed an article on Christmas customs around the world to Geography of Christmas. It's an awkward title that is confusing as geography involves territory and space, not a holiday or date. That means that you are using it as a metaphor and I don't think that is appropriate for a general encyclopedia. Better to be clear and direct. Liz Read! Talk! 16:48, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Review for Histone Acetylation and Deacetylation

Hey Neelix!

Thanks so much for the review, we greatly appreciated the kind words and the advice. In reference to your suggestions: 1)i went ahead and added information on histones and acetylation into the leading section. 2) We completely agree on adding more information. I'm in the process of writing up the final form of my HAT section and Kevin has told me he has more information to include, so hopefully we can add that in soon. 3) I fixed up the titles of some of the sections. If i missed anything or still got something wrong, please let me know and i'd be more than happy to fix it. 4) Great point on the redundancy, i went ahead and fixed up the problem there. 5) I wasn't sure what you meant by the allcaps. Did we mistakenly use it in the article? Just wondering where i should look because i want to make sure to fix as many problems as i can haha. 6) I'm not sure exactly on the utilization of the navbox, i think it was already created when we took on the article. i'll read more into it and try and fix it up some. But thanks for pointing out a potential problem! 7) I went through the whole article and tried skimming down on a lot of the sources in the paragraphs so that multiple sourcing from the same source in a row didn't happen. I do have a lot of situations where i'll use one source, then that source and another source, and then just the second source. Is that considered a problem? Thanks again for all your help with the article and if you have any other critiques, we would definitely appreciate any input you have!!BigA726 (talk) 01:39, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Hey Neelix, I went ahead and fixed the allcaps citation that was in our references. Its funny i looked right over it like, 3 times and didn't notice it haha. I'll take a look at the navbox sometime this week. It seems like an interesting feature i could make some use of. I actually do have another question. Our article has been a stub since we've taken it over. Will we get updates on how our article is graded before the end of our semester? I'm interested in seeing what the current grade of our article is, but i'm not sure who grades it or how often they grade it. It would be a shame to find out our article didn't make B or GA status until after the class is over. Thanks!BigA726 (talk) 18:22, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Sexual differentiation articles under WP:ANATOMY - request for comment

Hello Neelix! I pinged you recently on WP:ANATOMY because of the work I've seen you do on the Sex Differences suite of articles. In summary, there is a stack of articles about sexual differentiation that are under WP:ANATOMY and I feel that this means that a lot of information is duplicated, and also that I don't think readers can easily find what they're looking for, which isn't ideal. I provided a list on the thread.

I really like the clear structure of the Sex Differences articles you've worked on, and also feel they're quite well-written and easy to understand. Sexual Differentiation isn't exactly the same topic, but close enough that I think you'd have some good ideas about how to improve the structure. I'd be grateful if you could leave a comment or participate in the discussion here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Anatomy#Sexual_differentiation_articles Cheers, --LT910001 (talk) 07:20, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Education Program technical update, April 2014

Since the last update, development of the editor campaigns project has been continuing, and it's almost at the point that it will be useful to users running edit-a-thons and other non-course outreach events. (If you are planning such an event soon and would like to beta test it for tracking the contributions of newcomers, get it touch.) In the meantime, we've made a few small improvements and bug fixes to the Education Program extension:

Default course end date

The default end date for courses is now approximately six months in the future, instead of immediately. This will prevent the common problem where a user creates a new course page but does change the default dates, resulting in a course that is immediately considered "ended" and thus cannot be enrolled in.

Notifications when you get added to a course

Whenever a user gets added to a course by someone else, they will now receive a Notification.

Disabling individual student profiles

The student profile special page (Special:Student/Username, not to be confused with Special:Students) is a page that lists the courses a student editor is enrolled in, and is also supposed to list the articles that user is working on. However, the list of articles can include incorrect data in cases where an instructor or volunteer assigned the articles to the student editor. These profiles are being removed from the extension altogether. This change should go into effect Thursday, May 1. (Logs are still available to find out which courses a user is enrolled in.)

Article edit notifications for students coming soon

A nearly complete patch from Facebook Open Academy student Jeff Lloyd will add a new type of Notification: students will be alerted to edits made by others to the article(s) they are assigned (as well as the corresponding talk pages). Expect to see this feature within the next several weeks.

Duplicate courses and API deletion

Bugs in the course page creation process (now fixed) led in some cases to duplicate listings for the same course at Special:Courses. This happens when the same course page had two (or more) different course ID numbers. It is possible to clean up such duplicate entries using by making calls to the API. I've documented this process and written a Python script for it.

If you have feedback about these changes, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let Anna Koval or me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 19:23, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Pale-breasted

The article Pale-breasted has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This dab consists entirely of partial title matches. Readers will be just as well served by search results.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. BDD (talk) 20:39, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Thanks very much for helping out again this past semester with the JHU Molecular Biology course project. Your reviews and comments were excellent, and I especially like how encouraging and helpful you were to the students. It was very much appreciated!

Dear Wikipedia Ambassador,

I am seeking input on your experience as a mentor to new Wikipedians. This survey is designed to provide insight for the development of a new mentorship support tool on Wikipedia. If you have a moment, please take this survey, it should not take more than 10 minutes of your time to complete.

Radu (weapon)

Hello Neelix, Please integrally delete the article Radu (weapon) because it is a ridiculous false; my attempts to change were considered vandalism. I haven't patience to follow the long and complicated procedures. My e-mail is sdemetrescu@clicknet.ro. Thanks, Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.102.124.247 (talkcontribs)
