Why should this be a Wikipedia article?

This article is already a stub => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Raiders_(2011_video_game)Nguyen102 (talk) 05:16, 17 September 2012 (UTC))Reply
Good plan to expand an existing stub. LeshedInstructor (talk) 14:24, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Introduction

edit

Introductory information I've found thus far:

Release date: May 11, 2011

Publisher: Atari Europe

Developer: Incinerator Studios

Gaming Systems: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Rating: E10+

Star Raiders II is a video game [link] for the Xbox 360 [link], Playstation 3 [link], and PC. It was released in May, 2011 by publisher Atari Europe [link] and developer Incinerator Studios [link]. It is a remake of the 1979 Atari [link] classic Star Raiders [link]. Like the original, Star Raiders II is an action, first-person spaceship combat game in which the player travels through a streaming starfield in pursuit of the game’s enemy, the “Zylons”. Parts of the game were originally part of a licensed game version of the movie The Last Starfighter [link]. When the license fell through, the completed game was modified into Star Raiders II.

Star Raiders II is a remake of the classic game Star Raiders, originally for the Atari 8-bit [link]. It is a continuation of a series of classic games rereleased by Atari. The original was well received in its time for innovating the “space combat simulation” [link] genre with higher quality graphics and a more complex game play and inspired other titles such as the Wing Commander [link] and X-Wing [link] series.

The game pays tribute to the original Star Raiders with the same enemy and by incorporating many “familiar battle elements”, but diverges from the original with a new storyline. Its other additions to the original are customizable ships and multi-player gameplay, with co-op campaigns, a team-based multi-player mode, and online play. I will continue to expand on these guidelines. Any other suggestions for information that should be included? KellyD78 (talk) 19:45, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

In this review it talks about how the game is an adaptation of the old Stars Raider game. [1] Maybe you can mention in the intro that this game has the same name as the 1970s title and link it to the wiki page of that game. Nguyen102 (talk) 03:12, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I would like to incorporate the game description on the video game case in this section. If anyone owns a copy of the game or knows where I can find the information online, it would be greatly appreciated. KellyD78 (talk) 18:13, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gameplay

edit

Star Raiders is a space combat game, with battles between your small fighter class ship and the enemy Zylon ships, which have several different classes and weapons. In the gameplay section I will go over:

Ship Classes

Weapons

Enemy Types

Mission Types

Transformation Gameplay Mechanic Mechanic

There will be greater detail than this of course, but this is the basic outline of the topics I'll go over, as the gameplay seems to center around these aspects.

Did I miss anything? I think this covers most of it. Kkessler3460 (talk) 12:34, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Draft:

Gameplay

edit
Star Raiders features a storyline very similar to that of the 1979 classic. The Zylons, an alien race bent on humanity’s destruction, are moving their forces towards earth, and it is up to player to repel their assault and save the human race.

The player’s ship is a small space fighter, but with the capability to transform itself to deal with a variety of situations. The forms include a dogfighting ship, capable of close and quick battles with other Zylon dogfighters, an assault form that is good at destroying larger, more powerful enemy ships, and a turret form, for destroying the largest Zylon ships from the inside. All of these forms will be needed, as the Zylon’s dramatically outnumber the player, both in numbers and size of their ships. Aside from fighters of similar size, the Zylons have cruisers and frigates to confront the player, as well as their largest ship, the Basestar. Players can defeat the other 3 types of ships with conventional weaponry, but have to travel inside the Basestar and destroy certain key points to finally eliminate it. The gameplay unfolds along a galactic map, as players choose which missions they want to undertake to defeat the Zylon threat. Missions involve the players dogfighting with Zylon forces in a variety of settings, from an asteroid field to gigantic space elevators, and end when all the Zylon ships are eliminated. Once the mission is completed, players can return to the area if they so choose, to find ore for upgrading their weapons and shields.

I think that's most of the gameplay, from what I can derive. My sources come from http://store.steampowered.com/app/9970/ and http://www.oxmonline.com/star-raiders-review , the best I could find. Check it out and let me know if I messed up anything (I'll do Wikipedia formatting properly as soon as I can. Kkessler3460 (talk) 6:32, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Reception

edit

The general consensus is that this is a poor quality game. On metacritic, a site that takes the cumulative average of a game's score, the game scored a 35 out of 100. [4] Some comments about the game includes "Star Raiders gets boring way too quickly and fails to motivate you to play on." by GamingXP and "A mediocre, boring space shooter. Some ideas are interesting, but clunky controls and uninspired visuals makes this title a complete waste." by Multiplayer.it [4]

Critics mentioned that they didn't like the artwork in the game and it had poor acting which takes away from the atmosphere of the game. The game also has a confusing and underdeveloped plotline. You start off the game by learning that you have to fight a race called the Zylon. The game fails to explain why you're fighting this race and because of this missing detail, the reviewer, Daniel Caimes from DarkZero Magazine, found that he had a hard time being motivated to fight through the campaign. [5] The most interesting part of the game is the dogfight but even that could seem boring based on Daniel Caimes review from DarkZero magazine. He finds that the fights feel extremely "empty" because you don't have any ally fighters and there's only up to "20 things that you shoot down per stage". [5] Finally the gameplay is too easy because it gives the user unlimited lives and no penalty for dieing.

A summary of the main points of the review from GameSpot states that the game has "woefully inadequate tutorials, dull dogfights, bland visuals and annoying sound effects". Also one of the main actions in the game, which is destroying capital ships, is painfully tedious. [3]

Other Article Elements

edit

What other elements are you going to put in the article - side box, images, etc.? Where are you going to obtain the images or information for the side box?

  • We plan on putting in a sidebox with the developer, publisher, release date, genre, and what platforms the game was released for (similar in style to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_(video_game)).
  • We will attach screen shots of the gameplay to the article. We will also attach pictures of the game packaging. We will add a sidebox specifying the game genre, number of players, rating, developer, and publisher.
Adding a sidebox will greatly enhance the article, but you did not mention where you will take the information from. Also, you have to make sure the screenshots photos are appropriately licensed under the Wikimedia Creative Commons license.

==Situating the article within the Wikipedia community== what other articles does it link to/from? Is it part of a WikiProject? Are there specific individuals in Wikipedia you will seek help from on this article?

  • This article would be situated under Wikipedia's game section. It'll expand on the original "Star Raiders" article.
Good. Also, you need to further the description of other related articles it will link to/from. Notice that Star Raiders is under the WikiProject Video games - you can see it when you go to the talk page of Star Raiders. Also, specific specific individuals you will be contacting to assist you in your article. They could be initially identified from the WikiProject. Division of labor

  • What will each group member do?
  • Each member will do a section. There are three sections, so one section for each member.
Fair enough. In addition, there will need to be knowledge related to formatting and styling the page, and licensing images - you need to specify who will do these tasks.

Instructor's Feedback

edit

Choosing a stub to expand is a very good start for creating an article. I have few specific comments that I pointed up above. In addition, please make sure that your formatting is okay, for example, your formatting of section headings is a little all over the place, and a few links don't work because of extra characters such as ')' in the link. I look forward to see what the article turns out like! LeshedInstructor (talk) 14:24, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Observer Feedback

It looks like you guys have a pretty good breakdown of the game that closely follows traditional wikipedia formatting of game-related entries. One thing that might be good to include in the reception section (or perhaps its own "sales" section) is information about how the game did financially on the XBox Live Arcade since it came out a while ago. All in all, it looks like you guys will be in good shape. Briann23 (talk) 02:25, 26 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey guys, I like the ideas you have so far. Just a note that any images you plan on using have to conform to the Wikimedia Commons standard, so I'd definitely recommend figuring out what (if any) images you actually have the right to use on the Wikipedia page, because that could end up taking more time than you think to figure out. KeithJewman (talk) 04:07, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I like the idea of creating an article for a video game - since I am a fan of them. You have plenty of similar, well written examples to look at. One of my favorite games and a B rated page on Wikipedia is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO:_Enemy_Unknown They use screenshots, so asking how they were able to do this and not run into copyright issues may be of use. Screenshots would make the article very compelling, as well as focusing heavily on game play - specifically influences and similar games in the same genre. Jmc242 (talk) 06:21, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Great idea, thank you. I will ask the contributers of UFO: Enemy Unknown how they were able to use screenshots.
Does anyone own the PC version of the game that would be able to provide the gameplay screenshots? KellyD78 (talk) 18:18, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have written a message to one of the contributors of UFO: Enemy Unknown, Frecklefoot, and am currently awaiting response. I have added the user's talk page to my watchlist. Where do you get this game was called Star Raiders II? It was never produced or marketed as such, this is a re-rimagining of the 1979 game that shares the exact same title. Star Raiders II is the name the 1986 sequel to the original Star Raiders. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 22:57, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
