Watchlist script
editThanks for the script you just left. I may use that myself. Got a question. Do you know if its possible to make a script that chanegs the default location of a watchlist to say a userpage instead of the Watchlist server? --Kumioko (talk) 16:09, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand your question precisely enough. Do you mean that you'd want to view your watchlist from, say, User:Kumioko/watchlist instead of from Special:Watchlist? It's presumably possible, but it would be a fair amount of work to accomplish well and I don't see the point of that change: your watchlist would still be private to you, and the script would be slower and more resource-intensive than the default watchlist without adding obvious features. {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 16:16, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah that pretty much sums it up. I wanted to be able to setup a script that would automatically remove deleted pages and some other things and I can't do that with the server based watchlist. Thanks though its no big deal. --Kumioko (talk) 17:41, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Could you, please revise the content on my user page sandbox so I can confidently move it to the main space as an article. Wrongfully deleted entry
editThis is pertaining to the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xombies
I am not sure why this entry was deleted since it is a legitimate novel. One can purchase it online. I actually purchased it at a school book fair for my daughter when she was younger.
Would I or someone else need to recreate the page or is the book banned for some reason?

Children's Museum update
editIt's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.
We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcomed Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.
In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).
We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! LoriLee (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

editMSU Interview
editDear Nihiltres,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
I need your help
edithi, i hope you doing good, i need you to tell me what types of the advertising or promotional words or links that i have to avoid on writing a biography or any article ? looking for your reply.
- Uh, it's not that simple; I can't just list every possible instance of spam. Try writing a short article descriptively, then go through it and eliminate any phrase that adds more to promoting the subject than informing the viewer. Make sure to always focus on information more than presentation: answer the classic "who, what, when, where, why, how" questions. Write it up as a draft, and then ask for more help; there are plenty of helpful people that can give you feedback once you've written something. {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 22:16, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Happy Birthday (2012)
editInvitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
editI invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 22:02, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

John K. Delaney
editSometime ago you deleted a page for businessman John K. Delaney. A businessman and political newcomer John K. Delaney of Potomac, MD, won (April 3, 2012) the Democrat nomination to run against Roscoe Bartlett in Maryland's 6th congressional district (November 2012.) Is this the same guy? Is that sufficient notability to restore or replace his page?

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool
editHey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.
For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
User script list deprecation
editWikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.
If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:56, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

Deleted Article
editHi
You had deleted a page that my predecessor had created.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MetaTeam&action=edit&redlink=1
I read your comments and totally understand why you deleted the page.
However I would like to recreate it and am checking with you first (as I understand wikipedia policy requires).
Thanks for your consideration.
Beth Bettyobrien21 (talk) 17:38, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- The article was deleted through proposed deletion, so there's no barrier at all to requesting undeletion or starting the article again. I do note that you say "predecessor"; this suggests that you're involved with MetaTeam or eVisioner in some way, so please be familiar with Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline if that's the case. In a nutshell, you'll want to be very transparent about your involvement and careful that your activity on Wikipedia isn't promotional, but merely informational. If you need any more help, feel free to ask. {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 18:51, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

what do.I need to have on my page for it not to be deleted?
editHi. I am trying to make a Wikipedia page on the popular Youtube show, "The Skorpion Show". As I was ready to make my page, I saw that you deleted a page on "The Skorpion Show". Sso I just want to know what do I have to put on my page to ensure that it won't be deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BenjaminButler123 (talk • contribs) 22:03, June 11, 2012 (UTC)
- The page was deleted by proposed deletion, so there's no barrier to restarting the article, except that you want to make sure there are enough external, third-party, reliable sources covering the YouTube show that a quality article can be written, that is to say, that the subject is notable. Find those reliable sources, then include them in your article draft using footnotes. You can draft the article in your userspace, e.g. at User:BenjaminButler123/The Skorpion Show. {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 17:34, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and restored that article for two reasons: She was clearly notable given the ESPN and AP citations and the article had already had {{prod}}
for Non-notability removed once in 2007. (We don't re-prod articles for the same reason once someone objects.) I realize this was a long time ago, but I always make a point of notifying any admin whose actions I reverse. Toddst1 (talk) 02:40, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. Though it wasn't necessary to notify me, I appreciate the social value in doing so. :) {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 16:14, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

CIO Guideline
editI've been really busy writing an op-ed for the Signpost, contributing to a new COI essay, looking at duplicating the AfC process for request edits (though that may be beyond my technical abilities) and having some pretty lengthy conversations with users interested in the subject of COI, where I feel we're all learning from each other and finding good compromises.
At the end of the day though, the COI guideline is the front and center quarterback and the RfC was unproductive. I actually thought the guideline was fine, until I started hearing all the questions from PR people and realized just how confusing it is. I thought I would poke around and see if we can round up a posse to go through it line-by-line and just improve/clarify (not drastically change, but just improve). I'd be happy to help out as a sort of representative of the dark side. Maybe I am shooting for the moon here in thinking we can organize and mobilize? ;-) Posting a similar message with folks that are active on the COI guideline Talk page. Hi Nihiltres. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.
If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.
If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui 雲水 09:12, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

publishing on jack linsky
edit- Indented line
Hey I want to get my sandbox on Jack Linsky the creator of the stapler published as a real page. How can I go about this
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:ArtHistory03/sandbox&action=submit
(ArtHistory03 (talk) 21:38, 20 October 2012 (UTC)) ArtHistory03
- The article is already in Articles for Creation, so if you wait, it'll get reviewed at some point. If you don't want to wait, you could try requesting that it be moved to Jack Linsky, or by moving it yourself once your account is at least 4 days old with at least 10 edits.
- In the meantime, it looks like it needs a bit of work. I've fixed some of the bigger issues—such as the way that the page was somehow in three copies across the page—but the prose itself needs some work to bring it into line with Wikipedia's standards. In particular, it needs to be rewritten in a way so as to not directly praise Linsky, but merely outline his achievements (so that the reader can conclude for themselves that he is worthy of praise). The existing prose includes things that are clearly not in line with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy with puffed-up phrases like "the ingenuity of American capitalism" or calling his work "revolutionary". It also suffers in tone, with phrases like "to load a stapling machine, you practically needed a screwdriver and a hammer"—while evocative, it doesn't provide much detail or context: the reader is left wondering to what degree the "screwdriver and hammer" phrasing is hyperbole. I've fixed a little of it immediately and added some inline tags to help with fixing more, on the Articles for Creation version.
- A better approach is to provide direct details, or to contextualize opinion to a well-known source (possibly through quoting). It's bad if Wikipedia praises something directly, but it's often OK for Wikipedia to quote, say, the New York Times praising something. It's bad if Wikipedia says that "you practically needed a screwdriver and hammer", but fairly good if Wikipedia describes more directly the process involved in loading contemporary staplers and contrasts it with the simpler process pioneered by Linsky. Perhaps this could even be referenced to a patent that Linsky might have received for the invention?
- Because of the editorial issues that remain, I haven't moved the article myself already, and I'd recommend that you work on the article in Articles for Creation, but I'd be glad to take a look over it again or answer any more questions if you give me a quick poke here. :) {{Nihiltres|talk|edits|⚡}} 05:34, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Fundraising
editHi there, I see that wikipedia is at its fundraising again. I have an idea that could net Wikipedia and its spin-offs nice monthly donations and I want to know whom at wikipedia I would have to talk to to present this easy, very low-cost idea to them. I'd love to donate, but I live from hand-to-mouth. If implemented, this way would allow users, like me to donate passively, without ear-marking money from their wallets, to benefit Wiki and keep this great tool around, without having to stick out a hand annually. This COULD end wikipedia's annual fundraising drive!!! I can be reached by someone at 503-841-1356. I'd be happy to give you more details, if you want to give me a shout, any time, M-F after 8 a.m. PST/PDT
Thanks Evangeline

April - National Contribution Month
editDuring the month of April, Wikimedia Canada is preparing the National Contribution Month, and we are looking for experienced contributors to organize a contribution day (or half-day) in their region.
Contribution days are activities where Wikipedia's contributors, students, or anybody interested in contributing to Wikipedia meets together to collectively improve a predetermined theme. This meetings generally take place in library where references are easy of access, but can be organized in any communal room. Beside improving articles, a goal of this participatory workshops is to initiate neophyte in the cooperative contribution of Wikipedia.
If you are interested in organizing or participating in a contribution day in your region, communicate witht he national team on the project's talk page. The exact agenda of each local event is left to the discretion of the organizer. Help is available for the organization from contributors who already organized these type of days, so don't be worried. If you have any questions or want more information, don't hesitate to contact us.Amqui (talk) 00:44, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay.
