Commons image from Flickr - possible problem

edit

Hi there. Would you have time to check out Wikipedia talk:Non-free content#Living people and replaceable images (Bobby Fisher)? While posting something about replaceable images for living people, I uncovered a concern about a Flickr image on Commons, Image:Robert Fischer - March 2005.jpg, where you confirmed its license. Given that a different crop of this image is marked as an AP (Associated Press) picture here, I suspect that the Flickr user just grabbed the image from a news website. Could you confirm whether or not the Commons picture checking process ("was reviewed on 2007-08-04 by the administrator or trusted user" bit) involves checking just whether the licence has been correctly transcribed, or whether it involves any checking of whether the Flickr user themselves took the photo (it seem this is not the case here)? Thanks. Carcharoth 01:29, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Please come and participate in the discussion of Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg. Thanks for your prompt attention to this matter.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 00:56, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Plymouth things and stalking

edit

Cheers, buddy. I have a mainly Plymouth-oriented radar, and so pick up a lot of silly edits. Typifies the area a lot - in that people are enthusiastic to say things (Wikipedia: Wikiproject Devon) but lack the nouse to do them well (and that includes me). I'm not sure if it would be best for me to back off completely or continue trying to police things a bit, albeit trying to let most stuff past without interference like I try to. Up to me I suppose - I should make a positive contribution of my own. Wish I had a decent camera. Cheers anyway - keep up the good work. Stevebritgimp 22:35, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Marty 03

edit

Rather than starting a revert war, I'll talk here. My issue with Marty is primarily continuity between other WPTC articles. Continually removing the hat for that one article could be seen as disruptive, given that you haven't done the same to any others. And I'd hardly call this a discussion on whether or not to include a hatnote on the top of each page. Hurricanehink (talk) 15:48, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Now we're getting somewhere, rather than speaking our thoughts in the tiny edit summaries :) I'll admit, I forgot about that discussion - it was three months ago, after all, and nothing seemed to happen with it. You made some fair points, and I believe this would be a great compromise. It eliminates the hatnote, and it gives something to the See also section, which really should not be List of notable cyclones. Hurricanehink (talk) 15:58, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Peter, yea, that was me being really stupid, as usual. I fixed it. Regarding Marty, is that an adequate solution? I believe that the other storm pages should be linked somewhere. If we both agree, then Marty can be de-protected. --Hurricanehink (talk) 22:05, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Heh, I didn't know you were still dealing with that user. I know my solution is not ideal, but removing the hatnotes and deleting the pages is a bit of a two-part process. Some might object to deleting those hatnotes right now given their place, but if they were in the See also section of the article, they wouldn't be as valuable. If those pages don't get deleted any time soon (after all, the discussion pages on storm archives were kept), then these could have a bit of a purpose. There is some value in having them to link to other related articles - off the top of my head, I can think of Barry, Dean, Alberto, Beryl, and Debby in just the past two years. --Hurricanehink (talk) 23:16, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wait, I'm confused - since when did I ever care about policy. ;) But I'm also confused by your response. What is the harm in putting the dab page in the see also, like Hurricane Barry for all Barry articles. Hurricanehink (talk) 03:55, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Who says that the "sole purpose" of dab pages is to "help readers find the correct article"? You've said yourself that our dabs are more than typical dabs. Why can't we ignore their sole purpose and use them as articles in the see also section? The navbars might take time, and God knows they're much more work than to put a link in one section (and for that matter also removing it from the top). To avoid the potential naming confusing, a Barry article could have Other tropical cyclones named Barry as the wikilink; what is the harm in doing that? Hurricane Infobox

edit

heya Nilf, sorry bout the edit to the hurricane infobox with changing the align, for some reason i though that it had always been center align.

Also I was thinking that if the cat is left align then the storm name should be as well because it seems silly that nearly everything is central except that bit and it jus seems out of place with the rest of the template. Also do you want me to put it back on the other hurricane info box as well because i made the same change there. Seddon69 01:54, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Drake Circus AfD

edit

I think you must have !voted on the Drake Circus AfD just before I posted my comments and copied over the total rewrite of the article. Sorry for the edit conflict. The revised article is almost fully referenced, only makes passing mention of the contested "area" and is I think uncontroversial among those who've been working on it. The only issue that remains is its notability. Could I ask you to have another look, please? Thanks Smalljim 23:36, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reconsidering, and sorry for the trouble. It's my fault for dithering for several hours over whether to copy the rewrite over or not. And of course just minutes before I did, two people decide to look at it - that's called Sod's law here! I suppose I should have guessed that there'd be a flurry of activity on AfD pages just before midnight. Smalljim 00:30, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

And thanks for tidying up after the page recreation. I'm concerned about the existence of this: User:Nicole 50dc, which is what he doubtless used to recreate it. He's still editing that page so I'm worried it's going to be used to resurrect the page in some guise again. I've asked for guidance at the VP, but if you can help... Update. On Coredesat's advice, I've put the page up for MfD. Smalljim 09:08, 13 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the fair use disputed tag. The image satisfies WP:NFCC#8 easily, as the image is not used only as decoration, but rather as the only impact picture for the article, demonstrating the damage caused by the storm, meeting the "significantly increase[s] readers' understanding of the topic" test of the policy. The new fair use rationale should also satisfy WP:NFCC#10. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 06:33, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

tags

edit

Don't put those tags there, because I am trying to create a list of what needs to be done in each article. Tags at the beginning of the page are unhelpful. Good kitty 18:41, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

That might make sense if there were actual authors attached to it, and they had written it while neglecting to put references. Right now it is just stub class, with nothing substantial written after the lede. If you put tags across every article that is a stub, people will not be very happy with it. Tagging is a way of doing something without actually doing anything at all (and should be done conservatively IMO). There are obviously a lot of articles in need of expansion in WTCP, and ones that do have tags have been sitting idle for years. Good kitty (talk) 20:49, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have tried to work on WTCP while avoiding projects, but this is absolutely ridiculous. You are now implying that I am a copyright thief? You could have resolved the issue by adding references that you admit you left out in the first place, which probably would've benefited all. I have contributed so much more to WTCP, but now I would rather not edit here anymore and receive all these nasty messages from you. Good kitty (talk) 23:54, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
No listen. This discussion has changed from the tagging to the page splitting, so now I will address why I am tired of this place. This will be my last edit to Wikipedia (which I have been doing for three years without incident). You chose to be an admin, so it is your job to correct mistakes on others' parts. If I left out a detail when making an edit, you should correct it and tell me about it. However, you should NOT start to accuse me of deliberately infringing on copyrights. Your job is to do things with TACT, which you almost have less of than Chacor when he was an admin. You should also try to be civil and not leave bolded messages on talk pages or snide comments (like 'sigh') in the edit summary. Those things are considered rude, and it is your job as an admin to be civil.Good kitty (talk) 03:13, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pre-Meiji Period: Use of Japanese era name in identifying disastrous events

edit

Would you consider making a contribution to an exchange of views at either of the following:

As you know, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disaster management came up with entirely reasonable guidelines for naming articles about earthquakes, fires, typhoons, etc. However, the <<year>><<place> <<event>> format leaves no opportunity for conventional nengō which have been used in Japan since the eighth century (701-1945) -- as in "the Great Fire of Meireki" (1657) or for "the Hōei eruption of Mount Fuji" (1707).

In a purely intellectual sense, I do look forward to discovering how this exchange of views will develop; but I also have an ulterior motive. I hope to learn something about how better to argue in favor of a non-standard exception to conventional, consensus-driven, and ordinarily helpful wiki-standards such as this one. In my view, there does need to be some modest variation in the conventional paradigms for historical terms which have evolved in non-Western cultures -- no less in Wikipedia than elsewhere. I'm persuaded that, at least in the context of Japanese history before the reign of Emperor Meiji (1868-1912), some non-standard variations seem essential; but I'm not sure how best to present my reasoning to those who don't already agree with me. I know these first steps are inevitably awkward; but there you have it.

The newly-created 1703 Genroku earthquake article pushed just the right buttons for me. Obviously, these are questions that I'd been pondering for some time; and this became a convenient opportunity to move forward in a process of building a new kind of evolving consensus. --Ooperhoofd (talk) 17:57, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Editing of Admiral MacBride wiki page

edit

Hi,

I've logged in to check the Wiki page I created for the Admiral MacBride's pub, which contains the historic mayflower steps. Its regularly visited by American's, especially on thanks giving day. Upon logging in I noticed the following:

21:28, 6 October 2007 Nilfanion (Talk | contribs) deleted "Admiral MacBride" ‎ (CSD G12 - copyvio from http://www.admiralmacbride.co.uk/)

I'm newish to Wiki, but read the T&Cs and I thought the wiki page covered all the correct criteria? I'm also the website designer of the admiralmacbride.co.uk and work for the pub so their is no breakage in copyright. The photo taken was also by me on a summers day :).

I have a copy of the wiki page, which I'd like to readd, but wanted to check with you first about the reasons for deletion in case I missed something.

Kind Regards,

AfD nomination of Oxford Round Table

edit

An editor has nominated Oxford Round Table, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oxford Round Table and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. ColdmachineTalk 23:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copyrights

edit

You're citing photos for "no copyright status" which the uploaders are saying are photos they took themselves. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 02:47, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

They probably need to say "PD-self" and that would cover it, right? But they may not know you're looking for that precise wording, but you're not helping them. Instead, you're issuing threats, and they maybe can't figure out why, or don't even know about it if they haven't been logged on for awhile. So pictures that they, themselves, uploaded are going to get zapped for no good reason. You should be ashamed. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 04:08, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
The descriptions for the ones I checked indicated that the uploaders took the pictures themselves ("self-made" - what could be clearer than that?) In those cases, there is no practical difference between that and saying "PD-self" except for wording. You are issuing unwarranted deletion threats against those users without giving them any hint as to what the real issue is, namely that the wording doesn't precisely match what you're demanding. It's bureaucratic and offensive. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:01, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
It only "tells" the uploader something if they already know what this cryptic little box means. If I had uploaded something in good faith and had no idea what this box meant, I would assume that wikipedia is run by bureaucrats and idiots. Or I would send you an angry post (much angrier than these have been). Is that the result you want? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:24, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If those cryptic warnings actually told the users in plain English what they need to do to fix the problem (which they currently don't do), you could save yourself a lot of trouble. Unless you enjoy getting angry responses. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:40, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If I didn't already know that I'm supposed to say "PD-self", I would be extremely intimidated by that gobbledygook page that's supposed to "explain" licensing. It was written by and for someone who already understands it. The way I learn about these things is by asking an admin directly. And if they send me to one of these nonsense pages, I ask another admin. It is not fair for you to expect the casual editor to understand this legalistic mumbo-jumbo. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:47, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your contributions in discouraging people from participating in wikipedia. You aren't willing to do anything about the issues I've raised. So, enough of you already. Enjoy the complaints from the affected users. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:58, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
These "explanation" pages are nonsense. They shouldn't have to have a law degree to figure out what they're supposed to do just to upload a bloody photo that they took. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:01, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
The upload form doesn't make any sense either. I tried the "self-made" on an upload and thought it was done, and still got dinged for "no license", and had to add the PD-self afterward. That's probably what happened with some of those others that you tagged yesterday. You all have made this more and more difficult as time has gone on. You are hurting, not helping. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:17, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've seen that dropdown before. Which of those legalese-gobbledygook items is equivalent to "PD-self"? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:50, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
PD-self actually makes sense, unlike the other stuff. Hence it is of no use, eh? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 13:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, with all the hassle that comes with uploading stuff, I've concluded over time that certain wikipedians really don't want any images at all, and they grudgingly put up with the ones that they haven't yet found a justification to squash, making it as difficult as possible to upload them. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 14:13, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

A book is using the TC track image you created

edit

Here's an e-mail I sent to the author, who happens to live in my area of the country:

  • Hi. I'm a neighbor of yours, in Montgomery Village, Maryland who works for HPC. This e-mail is in reference to the book "Extreme Weather: Understanding the Science of Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Heat Waves, Snow Storms, Global Warming and Other Atmospheric Disturbances." I checked it out in the two-story Barnes and Noble (probably the one nearest you) and noticed one of the image citations appears incorrect. The image on the lower portion of page 61, with the NASA background map (now used by NHC in their graphical tropical weather outlooks) and the tropical cyclone tracks, was created by a member of wikipedia in 2006, and was up for image of the year.
  • In future editions of the book, it would be good if you corrected this oversight. The people who contribute to wikipedia, a freeware encyclopedia, put a lot of effort into its editing, and do it for the greater good (i.e. for no money). =)
Thought you'd be interested. I tried to use the citation tag on the commons page for the image, but it appears it does not work on there. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:33, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The image is credited as being a work of NASA. While that is true of the background map, it is not true of the track map. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:37, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi. What! I have the exact same book!!! I have also seen the image in at least one other book on a similar subject! The book I have right now is by H. Michael Mogil. It also says how Andrea and Barry might not be tropical. The other book that has the image doesn't say who it's from. Maybe it's because it's in the public domain? What a coincidence! After all, these books are recent, so they can include images from Wikipedia. Wow! Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 14:46, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Uploading a bunch of storm tracks

Hi, Nilf, long time no see. Thegreatdr found that the AOML has released a lot of cumulative track maps, and based on discussion on WT:TROP, we thought that Commons would be probably the best place to put those. Heh, I asked, and was waiting whether anyone answered. I agree pretty much on the renaming, using JTWC-like names, although I'd prefer to have the 'Cyclone' and 'Tropical Storm' in there, to make file names less cryptic. As for the seasonal tracks, I agree about uploading those. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 18:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

TC Tracks: Could I make a request, if it wasn't already done?

Hello. Seeing as you're the one who's been doing track maps lately, I was wondering if I could please request a specific one for an article I'm working on. The page is meant for Tropical Depression Winnie (the 04 PAGASA cyclone) and I need a track for it. The Typhoon2000 page provides tracking info at http://www.typhoon2000.ph/stormarchives/2004/stormlogs/23winnie04_log.htm . If you don't wish to, it's ok, but I'm unable to make one on my computer. Re: Stuff

edit

First, I agreed with a few of those you wanted deleted. A few are on en.wp (in which case, could I just delete them myself? What would be the argument/reason for doing/not doing it?), and a few others are on Mediterranean tropical cyclone.

Second, the TC tracks sounds pretty good. #2 in particular seems like a great idea. #5 also looks like a good idea, but really quick point on that. Would it be the entire duration (i.e. the date from the first point to the last point), or just when it was tropical? I think the former would be more informative, not to mention easier.

Third, that would also be great. Personally, I think typhoons are more important. We have many more of those articles, and I hope that isn't biased, but I feel they would be more useful there. There is more interest in WPAC articles, after all.

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Re: Queries

edit

Hey there. It's quite a pleasure to see someone taking the time to make sure no problems will be made by their decision, unlike some other rash decisions in recent days.

First, regarding the season, we changed the dates because we found out the June 1-November 30 season is a relatively new standard. Since older seasons didn't have that defined time period, and the season didn't always start in June/end in November, we opted for the intentionally vague seasonal period.

Second, that is a tough call. For some storms, their extratropical duration wasn't that much longer, or were a significant part of their history, meaning a slightly longer track isn't a problem. These might be storms that hit North America, and whose extratropical duration continued to impact land areas, like Hurricane Noel. Then, there are others that had a very long extratropical portion, but maybe weren't so significant; Hurricane Mitch comes to mind, since its portion in the Caribbean is thousandfold more important than its extratropical remnants. I don't know how many storms there are like Mitch, and perhaps that could be a rare exception to only have its tropical track (and maybe add a few others; Tropical Storm Josephine (1996) currently only has its tropical track, so maybe that is one to be discussed). For the most part, I'd imagine that including the extratropical portion is the best bet.

Now I have some news for you. We're experimenting with the FA successor to Irene 05 - FAC for Tropical Storm Erick in 2007. Remember how you wanted to write an article for Andres 03, or something like that? Juliancolton beat you to the punch, and is now doing the ultimate test. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:39, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's good about the tracks. Meh, Chris 00, Andres 03, same ballpark :P
About the NIO best track, is it cite-able? If not, then I don't want to torment myself by not being able to use it. If so, then hell yea! ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I never asked if it was reliable - I just asked if it was cite-able. Seeing that it is - hell yea! ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:07, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi

Hello. You are very much correct in your assessment of Juliancolton. I guess I have a few questions for you. If I were to leave a message expressing my opposition to him, I don't feel it would do any good. If you or someone else does, it might, however he is about to be overwhelmingly approved. He has almost no almost no opponents; that is not necessarily a good thing, as you might see from the rest of what I have to say.
You mentioned drama, he thrives on it and cultivates it. Yes, sometimes, he appears to be distancing himself. That is for appearances' sake and he just delegates someone else to do what he hopes to have done. Take the talk page on Hurricane Ike for example. There is a small group including him and Hurricanehink that try to squelch anyone who doesn't agree with them. Reverts and deletes: yes, you called those correct too.
I have been on Wikipedia much longer than these guys, but it doesn't seem to matter. There is a noticeable bias against those who don't spend huge amounts of time on minor projects on here. Not everyone has 2 or 3 hours a day to devote to Wikipedia, let alone 5. That doesn't make us less deserving or anything else of being an administrator. I have no desire to be an admin unless it would clean up these difficulties. There is far too much bureaucracy on here. Anyway, I look forward to talking with you. "I have been on Wikipedia much longer than these guys" - oh really? Under what account? As for the Hurricane Ike page, what are your concerns about precisely?--Nilfanion (talk) 14:48, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
precisely? well, he with a few other people are seeking to control the page and do what they want done with matters connected to it. Moonlight25 (talk) 00:04, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Drake Circus

edit

A tag has been placed on Drake Circus, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Track data in GIS

edit

Nilfanion,

I am starting a project to study the economic impact of tropical cyclones. I am looking for track data (including windspeed/Saffir-Simpson scales) in GIS format so I can develop impact indices.

I would be grateful if you could suggest where to look for this data so that I can save the work of loading in the raw NHC data.

Thanks in advance, John

Hello!

I have been trying to post a wikipedia page, and this is as far as I've gotten: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dan_dunn_journalist_b1968.jpg

Now I'm being asked to categorize the picture. I'm not a tech person. In fact, I think I might be a certifiable idiot when it comes to tech.

If you have the time and/or patience, I would be so appreciative if you could walk me through the next steps. I've tried to figure them out but have failed. Miserably.

Thank you SO much for your time and help.

Ordance Survey

edit

Nilfanion, my attention was grabbed by your post to WikiProject UK about using OS mapping data. The only map-working I have done is by hand but I am very interested in the possibility of using OS data to generate maps - or actually Ordnace Survey of Ireland/Northern Ireland data.

Do you know if the OSI and OSNI release this data? I've see this section on the OSI webstie. Nothing similar on the OSNI site, though. Since I've never worked with APIs of these sort before, where is a good place to start?

Thanks, --RA (talk) 08:53, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I must second this. Your maps at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Nilfanion/Maps are way superior to the current maps which have horribly dark boundaries. All I'd say is that you should perhaps add a county locator windwo in the top corner so you can see where in the country it is. I look forward to seeing your maps of counties of Wales. I made Template:Location map Wales Anglesey, Pembrokeshore, Vale of Glamorgan but if you could replace them this would be great. Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:35, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks :) I'm in process of creating the blank Welsh maps at present (done everything south of Powys so far). Insets are a high priority now too, by the time I've got that sorted there hopefully will be a clear indication as to what additional info is wanted for location maps.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:09, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeha the reason I ask is that if we were to replace the current county maps with yours we'd get people trying to revert it and complaining because "they dont know where in the country the county is. Once you created the maps with inserts there will surely be consensus to update them all with your maps. The biggest issue I have with the current maps is the darkness of the boundaries which interferes with the map labels written across it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:11, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Thirding this. It's not often that someone comes around and revolutionises an area within the encyclopedia and your work with maps has certainly done that with respect to UK geography. Jolly Ω Janner 23:31, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I know its quite a way away from Caerleon lol but I was wondering if you could create a decent svg for Template:Location map China. I've been trying to get hold of a decent svg for ages, unfortunately the one used on other wikis is the wrong projection. The current one is poor quality and horribly stretched. Scotland maps

edit

Hi, are there any more Scotland local maps left to create? See Template talk:Infobox UK place#Maps for places in Scotland. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:16, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

All the council areas are up now, so the Infobox should be able to call a localised map for anywhere (if desired) it does not ever need to fall back to the country-level mapping. On the other hand, larger scale maps, such as for individual islands (eg {{Location map Scotland Isle of Skye}}) do not yet exist.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:19, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wales maps

edit

Great work on the UK maps. I've added several of them to Wales articles already. Many thanks. Daicaregos (talk) 12:33, 27 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I second that - but I have a question. For the English maps, such as Somerset, you have used the old ceremonial county boundaries, so that North Somerset, a unitary local authority (within Avon 1974-96, by the way!), is shown identically to Sedgemoor which is a so-called "second tier" district council within the boundaries of the current Somerset County Council area. You haven't done a separate map for North Somerset - but for Wales and Scotland, where there are only unitary authorities, you haven't used the old boundaries at all, only the current ones. I'm not necessarily suggesting a particular approach, but would just comment that some of the unitaries, for instance in South Wales, are quite small in area terms, and there might be a benefit in having locational maps available for the "old" Glamorgan, Gwent, etc., as well as for the current authorities - even though the old counties generally don't have current government status. Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:14, 5 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for saying that (both of you). English ceremonial counties (which are "current" entities, not "former" like the postal counties) are used as that is what the previous location maps such as File:Somerset outline map with UK.png and the intent was for a like for like replacement. Scottish council areas are used as that is the only real current subdivision of Scotland. As for Wales, I think the discussion (at Template talk:Infobox UK place) indicated a preference for the unitary authorities instead of the preserved counties.
I will eventually produce maps for more areas, such as the Welsh preserved counties. Most of these additional maps will be for unitary authorities and districts that could do with a higher resolution (which means the major towns and cities). As there is complete coverage of Great Britain now, there aren't any maps that are "urgently" needed but if someone needs a specific map and requests it (eg [1]) I will try and do so in a reasonable timeframe.--Nilfanion (talk) 07:36, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for pointing me to that discussion - which I had (almost) completely missed! If there is a demand for maps for the larger areas, it's great to know that they can be produced without too much difficulty. Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:45, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Greater Manchester and Greater London

Hi Nilfanion,

Just want to congratulate you on the maps you produced. They are fantastic pieces of work, and you deserve a great deal of recognition. Thanks for the amount of work you put in.

I have raised a query at Template_talk:Infobox_UK_place (here) about primary routes being shown on the Greater Manchester and Greater London maps. I'm of the view that, on balance and with care, they should be added in for several reasons (stated at the template talk page). What's your view? Do you have examples? Hope you can help, --Jza84 |  Talk  23:52, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
