Orphaned non-free media (Image:Gordonstounlogo.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Gordonstounlogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 09:02, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Image:Mailstinglogo.jpg
editI have tagged Image:Mailstinglogo.jpg as {{orphaned fairuse}}. In order for the image to be kept at Wikipedia, it must be included in at least one article. If this image is being used as a link target instead of displayed inline, please add {{not orphan}} to the image description page to prevent it being accidentally marked as orphaned again. edithow do i upload images just to use them on my userbars ? they get deleted by YOU and are only embedded in the userbars so they dissapear from them Machete97 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 18:42, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Images are to be used in articles, if they are not in an article, then they will be deleted. Melesse (talk) 03:29, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- There are a LOT ofuserboxes that include pictures. Not all of them are in articles. Where are these pictures kept safe from deletion ?
- Then they're probably free content. The images you're using in your two userboxes are fair use, making them subject to a lot more rules than free content. If you see userboxes using non-free images, then they are breaking the userbox rules. Melesse (talk) 04:30, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

no offset, im on gmt but the offset is +1 for daylight savings during the summer, so is there any uk standart time tag i can put into a userbox so it works all year round to say what time it is for me Machete97 (talk) 21:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for being interested in "How to copy-edit"
edit"Recognize" is a word that is often misspelled in Commonwealth countries, especially Britain, and the common misspelling (over 20M Google hits!) is exactly why it makes a good example as a mistake people are likely to find that they can correct. Very few dictionaries list "recognise" at all. Merriam-Webster lists it as a British variant, but doesn't have an entry for it. What's going on is pretty clear...it comes from the Latin word "recognizare", so it's "recognize", but Brits are so used to seeing American spellings with -ize that they write as -ise that some of them assume that every American word with -ize should be spelled -ise; not so. - Dan Dank55 (talk)(mistakes) 02:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
argh. i dont have any problems about the -ize or -ise thing. you clearly know a lot more about that than i do. i just think referring to standard english and british english as seperate things is wrong. since when has there been a "standard english" anyway ? theres too many varieties for that. you'll notice that ALL I WAS EDITING I DIDNT TOUCH THE BIT ABOUT ISE OR IZE. Machete97 (talk) 17:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- Now I understand. I was mainly reverting so that we say "all" rather than "some"...that's the point...but you are right that the word "standard" could come across as preferring one variety over another. I just deleted it. - Dan Dank55 (talk)(mistakes) 18:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
editHi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!
Motto of the day
editHello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:42, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

FTW and disambiguation pages in general
editHi -- wanted to make sure you were familiar with WP policy for disambiguation (dab) pages.
On WP, dab pages are intended to help direct readers to the appropriate WP article when a title is ambiguous. For example, there are maybe 50 possible articles that could have the title "ace", so there is one "Ace" page for the most common meaning, and a separate "Ace (disambiguation)" page that directs readers to the remaining article titles.
In the case of FTW, there is no article called "Fuck the World", (although there is a redirect to the song of that name, which already has its own entry on the dab page), nor is there an article that discusses "fuck the world" that I'm aware of. So, there should not be an entry on the dab page, because there's nowhere to disambiguate to. That's the key part of a dab entry.
Hope this helps -- if you're interested in the manual of style guideline for disambiguation pages, which covers this, it can be found at WP:MOSDAB. Regards, NapoliRoma (talk) 23:35, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, NonNobisSolum, welcome to the Article Rescue Squadron! We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying and rescuing articles that have been tagged for deletion. Every day hundreds of articles are deleted, many rightfully so. But many concern notable subjects and are poorly written, ergo fixable and should not be deleted. We try to help these articles quickly improve and address the concerns of why they are proposed for deletion. This covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you. And once again - Welcome! -- Banjeboi 17:02, 1 May 2009 (UTC) |
CPB userbox
editHi Machete. I dont really have many thoughts on the userbox, not being a communist. What I would suggest is keeping my version, and also creating as many different new versions of it as you want. 'Let a thousand flowers bloom/blossom?', as one of the more notable communist mass-murderers said. (no offence intended) That would give people the option of choosing whichever version they prefer. If the hammer and dove is the parties official symbol and there is a free-use version of it, then by all means create a version which includes it. By the way, its interesting and pleasing to get a comment about this userbox, because you will notice on the parties talk page that when I mentioned I had created it someone was rather rude. But at has proven usefull or interesting to at least one person, which pleases me. Willy turner (talk) 18:24, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

editThanks for uploading File:PeterCriss PeterSvensk.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. editGd question. I'm not entirely sure why they aren't transcluded... probably goes back 2005 when the whole UBX controversy kicked off, and ubx templates were getting deleted willy-nilly. Dear WikiProject Video games member,
You are receiving this message because you have either Category:WikiProject Video games members or {{User WPVG}} somewhere in your userspace and you have edited Wikipedia in recent months.
The Video games project has created a member list to provide a clearer picture of its active membership.
All members have currently been placed in the "Inactive" section by default. Please remove your username from the "Inactive" listing and place it under the "Active" listing if you plan on regularly:
- Editing video game-related pages in the Article namespace
- Participating in video game-related discussions in the Project namespace (WT:VG, WP:AfD, WP:GAN, etc.)
Ideally, members are encouraged to do both, but either one meets our criteria of inclusion. Members still listed inactive at the beginning of November 2009 may be removed. You may re-add yourself to the active list at any time. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to working with you.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
