Got it, I use twinkle too and I didn't create the page. When I moved the page, it put me as the first editor on the article mistakenly. I usually move non-english titles before a CSD to put the criteria in better context but this is the second time this mistake happened, so I probably won't change the text of a title again, just the text in the article.--NortyNort(Holla) 11:47, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

It was User:Quarl that actually deleted the article, I submitted the request. That administrator can restore the article for you. The problem with it was that the text was copied/pasted from the reference into the article. See WP:COPYPASTE for more guidance and as always, use your own words. Baiyu (singer)

You marked this article as "Material PD or appropriately licensed for use" at Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations/2011-04-17 and I thought you should know that that wasn't entirely correct at the time you marked it. Wikibin is only licensed under GFDL and that hasn't been a compatible license for importing text since 1 November 2008 (see Wikipedia:Licensing update for all of the gory details). That said, Wikibin is also a particular site which only hosts copies of deleted Wikipedia articles, and so if an admin restores the history of the original (deleted) article for attribution then it will be appropriately licensed (I've done that in this case). I saw that stipulation on {{Gnuweb}} today after I had made a similar judgment on Lebanese Mexican which usesyawiki.org (GNU mirror). The text there is the same as the current Arab Mexican. I think that was a good call in that case, right? I understand what you're saying and see the restoration and history merge at Baiyu as well. Thanks for quality-checking my work and providing advice. Yeah, that's a similar situation; since yawiki is nice enough to actually say "It uses material from the Wikipedia article 'Arab_Mexican'" we know it's not G12 material. In this case the original article still exists, so this is a case where attribution isn't resolved through a history merge (since that would involve taking the history away from the original article), so we have to add attribution as indicated at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia (I used {{copied}} in this case, but there're a number of different ways to handle it - I just used and edit summary for Lebanese Venezuelan). There can be a lot of details to pick up, but I've been doing copyright cleanup as most of my editing for over a year now and Moonriddengirl for longer than that, so if you have any questions we should be able to come up with an answer.VernoWhitney (talk) 14:22, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

The older revision wasn't there when you looked at it - it was still deleted until I restored it earlier today. I don't add wikibin to the white-list because if there was creative content added to the deleted article by any editor besides the one who recreated the article then the history needs to be restored to provide proper attribution, otherwise it is a copyright problem. Besides the copyright issue which someone needs to know about in order to fix it, there's also the issue that most of the wikibin matches are subject to WP:CSD#G4 speedy deletion. Romance is a solo instrumental guitar work! (Though there are arrangements for voice, there are not original and only appeared later). The work is best known as a solo guitar instrumental... not a song. In this context, your changes (though probably done in well-meaning) will be improved accordingly. I think you're mistaken in removing the content above for copyvio, although I accept it was a copyvio initially, I had meant to save it my user space to work on but saved it to the main wiki in error. Hello, If you look [1], you can see several areas where an extensive amount of the text is still copied and pasted/closely paraphrased directly from the source. I saw you made some changes and it is an improvement fromoriginal, but there is still a possible infringement. I am not sure of the wesbite's copyright, but if one isn't noted, it is assumed to be copyrighted. Cut/paste moves

Saw your note at SCV so I thought I'd try to explain the situation in more detail. If someone cuts and pastes material from article A to article B, and then redirects A to B, that's a straightforward cut/paste move, and a problem because it breaks history for attribution. At this point there are really three options:

1. If you restore article A and redirect B to A, then you've fixed the problem, but undone the move at the same time - which is fine unless they're going to just go back and cut/paste again, but if you're watching the articles for a short time at least then this shouldn't be a problem.
2. Now where the page really should be moved to the new name (for whatever reason) then it takes an admin to move the page history from A to B, since it requires temporarily deleting page B. You should be able to tag these articles using {{Db-copypaste}}.
3. For more complex cases where page A hasn't just been turned into a redirect, but has been replaced with an entirely new article or dab page, as was the case with Pineapple gall adelgid created from Adelges, then it takes an admin to delete and recreate page A and then do the same to B. These articles should be tagged using {{Histmerge}} and may require some further explanation if it's a particularly messy situation.

Victoria Dam

Hi there! Paid a detour to the Victoria Dam last week, with the intention of getting some info and photos to improve the article by next week. At the site, I noticedthis structure. That's awesome and cool pictures! It must've been a nice tour and a good place to take a break. I would've loved to have seen it.</envy> About that structure, it appears to be the power plant intake. If you look at these coordinates:7°12′00″N 80°48′20″E (Google Earth), you can see the power station downstream. On your photo, that tower looks like a gantry crane which raises the intake gates and can move side-to-side along tracks to each one. During construction of the dam, they had to dig a 5.7km tunnel for water delivery and install the intake facility there. That probably explains why the whole face of that hill was covered in concrete. The concrete is good as well for structural support and to keep debris from rolling into one of the intakes.--NortyNort (Holla)10:06, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, my visits to both dams (Victoria and Upper Kotmale) didn't end up with much information, other that the "information" I found myself when looking at them, and the pictures themselves; I went there on the Sinhalese New Year, so everything was pretty much dead, unfortunately. I've managed to expand the Upper Kotmale article as much as I can, and I intend to do the same with Victoria, and some others, but I think it is nearly impossible to reach GA due to the lack of publicly available detailed information about them (apart from some online data). Well, Wikipedia has a "man on the ground", maybe there is something info in a library or local newspapers/magazines. Anyway, an article can pass GA with just online references. Surely there are some scholarly sources as well. If you went for FA, you might run into a few problems without a book on the subject. I did some research and found a lot on the dam and Mawhweli Project in general. I added it to my drawing board[[[User:NortyNort/Drawing_board#Victoria_Dam_.28Sri_Lanka.29|here]] and listed references. I think there is enough for a nice expansion and GA. The pictures help out a lot too and the more text, the more pictures! I will read read up on it today and start expanding soon. No, missing brackets or other misformatting won't give you good results (as I recall it either won't remove them from the list at all or it will spit out nonsensical results - see the last 5 entries here caused by me entering a leading colon in the wikilinks), but it won't break the bot (VWBot's now back up and running, FYI). Yes. It's an older version of the code and it has a few tweaks so that it acts only as a backup instead of racing CSB to see who gets there first, but it's the same matching algorithm. Some of the results come back different, but I'm not entirely sure why- maybe Yahoo feeds us slightly different results on occasion. I'd like to get a better (or at least a different) algorithm going at some point, but this task was implemented in a rush basically because CorenSearchBot isn't always stable, and it's bad for it to be down for days on end. It is good you made a back up. I think the bots are effective overall. I'd say there are false positives about ~10% of the time and sometimes the bot doesn't tag the article or appear to catch the copy/paste. When it's running it scans every new article. Part of the problem with effectiveness is that it's limited by what Yahoo search provides so it doesn't catch matches in Google Books, for example. The threshold could be tweaked to catch more borderline articles, but that would also increase the number of false positives, and judging from feedback it's already pretty much at the limit of what people are willing to put up with. The rest of it mostly comes down to the algorithms which can certainly be changed but that takes time for coding and trial/error which just hasn't been put into it yet. I found your sandbox here and made a few tweaks if you don't mind. It looks better but there are still some matches and close paraphrasing with the biography text and it looks like a derivative work. If you look at this [2], you can see text matches in bold and the text surrounding it. An example below:

• Your sandbox: "europe the far east and eastern block countries to broker deals between dow chemical the government of romania and the other eastern bloc countries"
• His bio: "he traveled extensively throughout europe and the far east brokering deals between dow chemical and the romanian government and trade agreements with other eastern"

Hopefully you can see what I mean there. When I write an article, I have the source in one tab of my browser (or in front of me for offline sources) and the Wikipedia edit-window in another. I switch back and forth and just put everything in my own words. If you try to copy/paste and switch words around, it makes more work in the end and increases the chances of creating a derivative work and/or copyright violation. It is always best to start from scratch which would be the best course of action with Anthony DiPaolo. No problem. With matches in the Duplication Detector tool...not necessarily; there will always be the names of people, companies, places, etc along with coincidences. The tool is good for improper matches such as[3], which is an article that was recently cleaned up. It is also good for identifying close-paraphrasing. Thanks a lot! Part of my motivation to help there is the backlog. I would like to help at CCI but all my time is taken up at SCV and CP with not that much left for article content. As a relative newbie to the space, I have been formulating my own ideas to improve the space. I think a clerk would be the best way to establish help and organize the space a little better. There are active editors at SCV that could do pretty much the same job at CP. When I first saw CP, it came-off as admin-only. Maybe other editors feel the same way? I am glad that I am helping you out, you are crucial the board. For a time, we eliminated the blanking requirement and felt very clever for the automatic hiding, but our error was pointed out to us. :) I'll look forward to hearing your ideas! I have contributed 50,000 times to Korean Wikipedia and have created about 3,500 articles for about three years. However, I am not yet accustomed with the activites in English Wikipedia due to different policies and (somewhat more restricted) guidlines from those of the Korean Wikipedia. Also I am not good at English. Sorry if my contribution bothers you. I didn't want to copy and paste copyrighted materials, but I probably had to paraphrase it to prevent copyright suspicions. Please understand that I am still learning English.

Hey Ykhwong, your contributions don't bother me; no worries. The only thing left to do on that article is a revision deletion that an administrator will come by and do later. I commented that you had tried to clean some of it up which you did for the most part. I haven't worked on another Wikipedia but from what I gather, this one is the most stringent with rules, etc. Copyrights are universal though and should apply to all. Even if you have trouble with English, you shouldn't copy and paste the text or try to paraphrase it. I found a lot in a search here (my results may not show). There is a lot to sift through and maybe I can bring it down to less results. In the search, I am not sure what class/type document is actually for a license renewal/request. This looks like typical gov't bureaucracy to me. In the history sections on dam articles, I don't detail the history of licensing, maybe a sentence or two about when its license will expire. I was involved in developing the predecessor system to eLibrary and also got the full text of FERC Reports loaded into LEXIS. You can also search FERC/FPC decisions on Westlaw, but both LEXIS and Westlaw charge, while eLibrary is free. Confine your eLibrary search to "Opinion/Orders." Set Docket Number to P-1494-* (* is a wildcard character.) You can zero in on the date of the last license renewal to pick up that order and its conditions. You can also use Google News around that date for press coverage of the renewal. More recent orders show battles over building marina piers into the lake. One recent order on marina piers drew a publish dissent from Commissioner Sudeen Kelly. There is ongoing environmental concerns about the oxygen levels in the lake water and its effects on the lake's ecosystem. A key point is that regardless of who owns the dam, its hydro license is a public trust which FERC can give to someone else in 2022 if the current licensee is not the best person to operate the facility.

copypaste vs move

Hi NortyNort. Thank you keeping an eye and sending me the notice. I have worked together with User:Dr. Blofeld to create articles for all of the (initially 79 smaller) barrios of Montevideo and we have been in agreement that some of them will have to be redirected to others of the series to end up with the 58 (actually it turned out to be 62) officialy recognized barrios. You will notice that most of my talk page contains discussion with Dr. Blofeld about Montevideo, barrios, etc. The little stub ("Article name" is a neighbourhood (barrio) of Montevideo, Uruguay) and the empty infobox which I copypasted[4] was a serial work he did to start all 79 stubs. I am absolutely sure he has no problem with my action. The reason that in this case I redirected instead of moving is that after the move I would have to create an article with the exact (old) title and place a redirect to the moved (new) name. Please note that both texts are translations from the same source, the old Russian Great Soviet Encyclopedia, numerously used in the WP, i.e. the same underlying terminology was translated with the same words, some coincidences are inescapable, but if you can run the comparison again, it should show much less lengthy coincidences than on may 10th initial version. Hoover again

There was an article in the NY Times that mentioned that with the huge snowpack in the Rockies this year, there will be drought relief for Lakes Mead and Powell. Probably not worth a mention at this point. With luck, they'll have to use the spillways at Hoover again as in 1983! I'd go again just to see that.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:08, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

I see! I knew it probably wouldn't apply but with the flooding in the Mississippi basin and elsewhere recently, I checked the lake levels anyway. Flooding would bring some relief. Hoover Dam is second in-line and I don't think they will let Lake Powell rise much into flood storage, so we may see a spillway use. It depends how they manage it and how much run-off there is. A year-over-year increase could cap-off a few sentences on the worst drought in a long time. The effects on Lake Mead have been covered in that article, but it may be good to cover the effects on power in the dam article as well. It would be nice to see some drought relief, so Vegas can be at ease for a short while and the northern Nevadians can stop fearing the city "stealing" their water...for a short while as well.--NortyNort (Holla) 11:40, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Yea, tough one to catch. I will look at Hoover more this weekend and maybe draft something up. Given the water projections in the NYT article (5.6 billion m3 between Lakes Powell and Mead), it doesn't seem they will reach near full capacity. Hey Keysanger. Hmm, I have had problems refreshing the duplication detector (DD) within minutes after cleaning up an article but never this long after. Anyway, [10] is a link to the DD with the current version of your temp article compared to the BBC article. Among several, one instance: "the moyle family a chilean judicial investigation concluded he had been murdered" appear both in the article and BBC article by visual confirmation as well. No problem, I had to remove a few of the categories as one didn't exist and two others referred to just a musician, not a group. I added an infobox in there that you can update too. Regarding your friends posting in the forum, it depends on the terms of use for that website. Some websites let users hold the copyright while others copyright all content. Wikipedia, for example, copyrights everything I add to the site under CC-BY-SA (note the disclaimer below the "Save page" button). If the site is copyrighted, your friend may have to have it verified through OTRS. Fujinuma Dam formatting

hello I had to revert your formatting changes. I understand your desire to keep all three images on the page, but because MOS does not permit text being "sandwiched" between images or infoboxes, and because ADA blind readers are not compatible with left-aligned images beginning new sections, your changes will not work no matter how logical they may seem.

Because there is really only room for 2 images and the infobox in that page, I think that the location map is the least relevant to the page, being non-unique and replicated elsewhere on WP.
