Speedy deletion nomination of User:Np3 1997/sandbox

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Np3 1997/sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 16:27, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I am trying to understand a little more about the deletion of my article. The main reason seems to be that it was deleted because it promotes a company. May I ask a question? Although our company isn't technically an insurance business, we do provide membership based insurance to it would be comparable to companies like Allstate or Geico. Both of these companies are currently in Wikipedia. How are they not considered advertising or promoting their company on Wikipedia? Please explain. I don't believe the dating of our company page was warranted and I'm trying to understand how these other insurance companies are on Wikipedia? And I'm also trying to understand how we can better write an article on our company?
Thank you!! Np3 1997 (talk) 15:55, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Np3 1997. Thank you for helping to build Wikipedia-- the world's largest free content encyclopedia. A page you created  User:Np3 1997/sandbox has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seemed to be unambiguous advertising which only promoted a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to have been fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic.

This article needs to be rewritten from scratch from reliable, third party sources unconnected to the subject."Before you start writing, gather a list of indisputably reliable sources that are entirely independent of the [subject] and that devote significant coverage to the [subject]. Once you have that list of high quality sources, format them into references. Referencing for beginners explains how. Now, neutrally summarize what the sources say, avoiding any promotional language. You can find much more detailed advice at Your first article." --per Cullen328" Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Persistent posters of promotional content may be blocked from editing. Posters of promotional content with promotional usernames may be blocked on sight.

Information on content and common pitfalls to avoid can be located here and here, however be aware that this is not an exhaustive list. Pages can sometimes avoid these pitfalls and still be seen as an ad copy or unambiguously promotional, particularly if the editor appears to be a paid editor or has some other conflict of interest. Please review these policies, including the FAQ page on organizations to determine if this applies to you.

Common mistakes or beliefs about promotional editing center on the assumption that promotional editing only applies to promotion for commercial gain. Some tags or G11 nominations are met with confusion by creators, particularly if they spend much time reading or creating corporate documents, mission/vision statements, or similar copy for their organization. The frequent exposure to promotional tone may make it difficult to notice non-neutral phrases or styles, as the editor has grown accustomed to seeing it as everyday writing or speech. This can be difficult, but not impossible, to unlearn.

Another common assumption is that the prohibition against promotional editing applies only to businesses or organizations. It applies to any topic, including a person, a non-commercial organization, a point of view, etc. and CV/resumé's are by their nature promotional.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia-- subjects must meet notability guidelines with reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and providing verifiable information. That generally means someone unconnected with the subject needs to have written a great deal about the subject. Please see this page on citing sources and Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). This page has templates you can use in citing your sources. Place the template {{Reflist}} at the bottom of the page, and references cited in the text will appear there. New article creation can be difficult, but the Article Wizard can help you. The new user tutorial can help you avoid future problems. You can ask for help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk and on IRC chat Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure is a useful tutorial.

New article creation can be difficult and frustrating. Sometimes it is better to first gain experience by fixing and helping maintain existing articles. Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask contains links to things that badly need doing, if you are so inclined.

This notice is information dense. Please carefully read and thoroughly understand the linked information before attempting further article creation.

Your content was promotional in tone and not supported by reliable sources. Please read the deletion notice I left you. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles about insurance companies must meet WP:NCORP. Subjects of encyclopedia articles must meet inclusion requirements with reliable sources which are unconnected with the subject and which provide verifiable information. Someone unconnected with the subject needs to have written a great deal about the subject. That you do not recognize the promotional nature of your edits is discouraging to me. Given your conflict of interest and your promotional edits, it would probably be best if you gain experience with encyclopedia writing before attempting to write about your company. Thanks. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:08, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Np3 1997. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page User:Np3 1997/sandbox, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:09, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for your reply. So, I just want to be sure I understand. I am not able to write an article if I work for the company I'm trying to write the article about? So, it needs to be an outside person NOT employed by the company writing the article?
I also want to understand writing with the intent of promoting - the article I was trying to write was meant to be purely informational similar to what an article on AllState insurance and Geico Insurance have on their pages.
Thank you for your reply! Np3 1997 (talk) 16:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
You need to unlearn promotional writing. "Experience has unfortunately shown that most (but not all) people with experience in PR cannot be taught to write a proper article, because they are so completely oriented to writing advertisements or quasi-advertisements that they honestly cannot see the difference between that and a proper encyclopedia article." -- User:DGG. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:53, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate your response and will most definitely take that into consideration. May I please ask - does the person writing the article need to be someone not employed for the company that the article is about?
Thank you for your assistance and prompt responses. I appreciate all the feedback. Np3 1997 (talk) 17:00, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Conflict of interest is hard to overcome. It also should not be someone hired by the company. Please read the deletion notice I left, including the linked information. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 17:05, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is (correctly) assumed that a person involved with a company is incapable of being an objective judge of the company's notability (i.e., worthiness of inclusion); and that such a person will find it difficult to write from the required neutral point of view, and use sources that are independent of the company itself.
Wikipedia is not a business directory, so a company is not entitled to have a Wikipedia article just because it exists. All topics must be notable by Wikipedia's definition to merit inclusion. In the specific case of a company, it must meet the notability criteria for companies and organizations. For this to happen, the company must have already received significant coverage in multiple reliable and independent sources. We have no interest in what a company wishes to say about itself, as this is an inherent conflict of interest. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 00:46, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
