  • Thank you very much, Ravichander. Yes, I hope to continue as long as my age permits. Did you read the latest DYK Hook on Pulicat Lake, which I have posted jointly with Marcus.

I will come back to you for some help in getting some of the merge tags on my DYKs such as Parikraka and Lonar Lake)sorted out.--Nvvchar (talk) 22:55, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article is good :-) How much DYKs have you written till now?? Have you considered listing your name here.-RavichandarMy coffee shop 03:44, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Units

edit

Sorry, was not well last week.

About units: This should answer your query: Template:Convert/list of units Look at the fourth column for the abbreviation. I'm not sure that Mcum and cumecs are. If you think it's an important unit, you could request it here: Template talk:Convert
For rupees crores/millions, better to use what the source uses (for Indian sources lakhs/crores). But use this template so that the USD equivalent is also displayed: {{INRConvert|500|c|2}} (use "c" for crores, "l" for lakhs, "m" for millions) (the 2 represents the rounding. Negative values will round up to the nearest 10's 100s 1000s place as applicable. Documentation is available here: Template:INRConvert =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:13, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
PS How do you like the archiving? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:16, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for archiving my talk pages. It looks great.

There are many technical units which need to be addressed under convert template. I will post the list needing attention soon.--Nvvchar (talk) 19:20, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

quick answer

edit

Hi ... hooks do get lost. The easiest way to find them is to look back through the history of DYK main page here. If you do find a missing set then they can be copied to the archive here. Is that enough explanation? If not then Ill tell you more. Victuallers (talk) 17:51, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have checked for three dates from 10th to 12th November. I could not find the hook details. Probably, it has gone missing or you could guide me more to see in other pages. Thank you--Nvvchar (talk) 18:14, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pulicat Lake

edit

I liked your work on Kodaikanal Lake and trust you will do as well on Pulicat. I went ahead and broke the article into sections relevant to the info already there. Sorry I have no aerial or Flamingo pictures from there, unlike Point Calimere where I visited for 3 days last year and got lots of pix. I suggest that this article be combined with Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary. I can do that if you go ahead and add some of your interesting information on the Limnology, topography, condition of lake and hydrology aspects. Marcus (talk) 13:33, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you search MCC Estuarine Biological Laboratory for additional info. This lab is an extension of the zoology dept of the Madras Christian College established in 1968. The lab was built with the funds from "Bread For The World", Germany and funds from UGC, New Delhi. This lab was founded by Dr. P.J Sanjeeva Raj. Marcus (talk) 13:56, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
MACRO FAUNA OF PULICAT LAKE is especially comprehensive. Marcus (talk) 14:40, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
You have already reordered the text of Pulicat lake. Siince the artcile does not cite any refrences and is not completely informative, I will first exxpand this artcile with referecnes and additonal text with all refrences and inline links. The refrence by Dr. P.J.Sanjeev Raj is very informative and contextual. I will add from this reference also.--Nvvchar (talk) 12:10, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Well that was interesting. Thanks for getting me into the DYK nominating process. Some of my articles have been in DYK, but only because other people nominated them.
I am working on a new article User:Marcus334/Sandbox#History_of_Pulicat which I don't think is ready to post yet. If you can look it over with a critical eye I'd appreciate it. Perhaps after it is posted as an article we can nominate it for your 26th.
DYK that...the History of Pulicat Tamil Nadu shows there were over 38,000 Indian slaves obtained by Dutch slave traders and shipped to the East Indies.
Marcus (talk) 02:00, 29 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
The Hook has to be referenced in the first introductory para (two paras can be included since the text is long). Otherwise, it may not go through. The article is interesting but I need some time to add more text to it. Give me a week's time, please. Thank you--Nvvchar (talk) 14:56, 29 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking time to work on the text. Time periods that need work are before 1606 and after 1825. Please work directly in User:Marcus334/Sandbox#History_of_Pulicat rather than copying to your own sandbox, so we don't get into problem of merging two different versions. I will be working on it also. Please cite every sentence and avoid use of any .com citations. Marcus (talk) 19:49, 29 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Marcus.

I have added some text and photos to the artcile on History of Pulicat Lake in the sand box. I feel the intial para should reflect the contents of the artcile and needs to be duly refrenced. I have refeenced it now. With this it would be easier to put a suitable DYK Hook. It may be better to avoid putting photos which are already in other articles of the Pulicat Lake and Pulicat. I have therefore added some more photos and also a map with a flag showing the chronolgy of foreign rulers.I will be adding more in the next few days.--Nvvchar (talk) 01:34, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Berijam Lake

edit

I see that you found my User:Marcus334/Sandbox#Berijam_Lake stubette. I started it because it will link nicely in some of the articles I've worked on in the Palani Hills, but I couldn't find much info on it. I notice that Lakes of India are your specialty. Can you find more on this one? Marcus (talk) 21:58, 1 December 2008 (UTC) Yes, surely.Reply

  • When I did my Kodaikanal Lake article, I collected lot of references. My target is to cover two lakes of each state. Still short of target. I will work on Berjam after the history of Pulicat Lake is completed.--Nvvchar (talk) 22:11, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pashan lake

edit

Pashan is a suburb of Pune and contains a man made lake. I have been trying to find material on it for some time but not with much success. Just few references on water quality and other details but not much. I wanted to check with you if you have any. I really appreciate your work here on WP. Thanks! --GPPande talk! 21:22, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Do let me know if you find anything for this lake. Actually, I too had the same problem after posting the message on your talk page as I could not see it. I do not know what happened and even cleared my cache to see if it is visible. --PrimeHunter (talk) 02:35, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Berijam Lake

edit
  • Article looks great on first read.
I have moved it to User:Nvvchar/sandbox#Berijam Lake so we can work on it there.
Since you are the Indian Lakes Guru, this is mostly your article, but I'll be pleased to do some proofreading and minor formatting.
Will start after History of Pulicat is posted and DYK co-nomination is submitted...soon.
References should be done in cite rather than ref format as Nicholas and I explained to you earlier.
See: User_talk:Nvvchar/Archive_2008_November#References
Best citations are from .gov, .in, .org, books and journals; not .com sites or blogs.
Use Google advanced book and scholar search to find them.
TAWFAs: The Art of Writing Featured Articles by User:Nichalp is very usefull.

Thanks. The talk page seems to be working and has displayed the latest DYK.
It was added in [2] and caused the software to interpret the following text as part of the ref. I will inform Marcus334 who added it. Comments can be signed normally now. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:46, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

History of Pulicat

edit
I have read Ravichander's suggestions. The first para only needs to be referenced. I feel that the article is now well done and ready for DYK.Please post it.--Nvvchar (talk) 18:18, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Post Berijam text at User:Nvvchar/sandbox till its ready for Berijam Lake. Marcus (talk) 17:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The first table referencing from body of article is done. Will work on other aspects you mentioned. Marcus (talk) 21:25, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have posted Berijam Lake article on your sand box only. Plase add additional text as you may consider sutable.--Nvvchar (talk) 18:18, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Great new references! I have converted all previous <ref s to proper Citations.

Going through: my preferences/gadgets/editing gadgets, I have checked ref tools to add a cite button to my editing toolbar to make citations easy.

I will refine your additions. Article is looking better and better. More old images of Pulicat would be good. Marcus (talk) 23:41, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I've had a closer look an your last additions and integrated them with prexisting text, with the exception of one para (and images) about reasons for rise and fall of the VOC. That is material for VOC article and had no direct relation to pulicat, so I removed it.
Looking at the article overall, it seems like we have given a good overview of the subject. This article has been interesting but I've probably spent too much time on this. Maybe now is the time to finish fine tuning and cleanup of what is there, then post it as new article and submit to DYK. What do you think? Marcus (talk) 06:51, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just a day more. Vijayanagara rule which lasted more than Dutch rule is not adequately covered. Let me search a little more for references.I will let you know by this evening.Yes, the article looks fine now.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:58, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good morning, I expanded Religious traditions and finished some cleanup yesterday. Third set of eyes would be good at this point. Please limit new material to that which has direct reference to Pulicat. How about Geological history?Marcus (talk) 15:16, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
For example:Alluvial formations Marcus (talk) 15:24, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Geological history (a scientific subject) may not be very appropriate for this article. I have read the reference you have cited. I could not find any text worth using for this section. I have read the article as finally edited by you and made correction of very minor typo errors. However, the first para needs a suitable citation. The artcile is now ready for DYK. The Hook could be the same as suggested by you initialy on salve trade. --Nvvchar (talk) 21:42, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I checked the details of para 3 in Portuguese trading outpost section and it seems that facts given on p. 13, para 3 in the reference #12 for the para are incorrect. I have changed the details to what seem correct, but now have a para unsupported by a good ref, other than the info in the links within it. Please check this out. I see you made no edits thursday, so you must still be working on the Vijayanagara rule. That's good. We have to get the detail of these various kings as they relate to Pulicat correct. Marcus (talk) 08:50, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will verify and see if some alternative references could be introduced. I could not get more info on Vijayanagara Empire.Except to verify the reference 12 mentioned above, I have no additional inputs now. In the meanwhile, I have completed my text for the Berijam Lake. How do I upload the text, references and photos without overlapping on the Pulicat text? Shall I send it my e-mail?--Nvvchar (talk) 15:26, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Start your own User:Nvvchar/sandbox to work in. History is DONE?. What is mangiliyilam?
  • the DYK hook is well referenced under Slave trade:
and between 1621 and 1665 alone, used 131 ships to transport 38,441 Indian slaves obtained mostly from Pulicat brokers.[1]
  1. ^ Dijk, Dr. Wil O. (Winter 2008). The Dutch Trade in Asian slaves: Arakan and the Bay of Bengal, 1621 – 1665 An end to the history of silence? (PDF). NEWSLETTER. Vol. #46. I think this fact is the most interesting/shocking fact in the article and may stir some readers social conscience a bit.
A Hook is a "rhetorical device that gets the attention of the audience and makes them want to listen to the rest of the speech". I think this does that well.

Congratulations on the Bangalore Lakes DYK. I read it and think it does well in raising the readers awareness of this current issue. It seems the courts acted well on the controversy. Question is, will the various agencies follow through as ordered? This article can only help to increase public pressure for them to do so. Kudos for Internet activism.

PS, you go back to Bangalore soon?

Marcus (talk) 07:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Marcus, thank you very much for the comments on Lakes in Bangalore.I just tried to be different this time.

We can post the Berijam artcile on my return to India. I have noted your edits and they are all fine, except the formula for conversion of ha to acres. 1 ha = 2.5 acres. I have also asked for help, on the relevant talk page, for the formula for conversion of MCM to million acre feet.Do you think we should elaborate on the trekking part?

Yes, I will be returing to Delhi tomarrow morning. I will be able to see the messasges only on 11th morning there.I will also be visitng Bangalore towards the end of the month when I intend collecting some material for my articles on subjects related to Bangalore (other than lakes).

If you are in Delhi in the near future, please let me know. We should meet. In fact I was thinking of visiting my brother in Fortlauderdale but could not find time.--Nvvchar (talk) 16:21, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Moving beyond DYK

edit

I have seen your good contributions to DYK. Why don't you move the articles you worked upon to the great step of Good article rating (GA)? The nominations can be done at WP:GAN and the criteria of a Good article is listed at WP:GA?. Weigh the article aginst these criteria and nominate suitable articles for the GA process. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:00, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you for your views on upgrading some of my DYKs. My limitation is of the knowledge of Computer software for editing, referencing etc. My age is also factor. But I would be happy to proceed further, if you agree to become a peer reviewer and help me in this exercise of upgradation. Do you have any suggestions on the artciles, which could be immediately taken up for upgradation to GA status? History of Pulicat on which I have worked with Marcus could be a good begining (if Marcus agrees) since you have already done a lot of editing on it and now you are also credited with the DYK. The other article is on Lakes in Bangalore which has a message.

Incidentally, you have still to help me with the Parikrama article merger issue. I have transferred some para from the Pradakshina article but there are no citable references for the two transferred sections. --Nvvchar (talk) 05:21, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Triple hook with Berijam Lake

edit

I've been in touch with Shyamal and he has some concerns about taxonomy of the Grey-breasted_Laughingthrush. We'll resolve that enough to post the articles soon I hope. I just don't want people picking at the articles or the hooks once they are nominated. Pulicat went well!

Good to see that History of Pulicat appeared on DYK yesterday, Congratulations. Marcus (talk) 08:53, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
