editJust wanted to say great job on populating the OSU alumni category. You've more than doubled the number I put in there initially --Nobunaga24 08:58, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:OSU Newark Campus View.jpg)
editThis file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:OSU Newark Campus View.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Jusjih 15:48, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
License tagging for Image:OSU ATI Logo.gif
editThanks for uploading Image:OSU ATI Logo.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Ohio State University categories
editI'm rather confused by the subcategories you created recently, as the names are ambiguous and do not correspond to any other preexisting categories, and the ordering principles are very unclear from the articles you have grouped together. Could you please give a concise description of what you intended for each of these categories? One or two sentences should suffice.
- Category:Ohio State University enthusiasm and entertainment
- Category:Ohio State University landmarks properties and facilities
- Category:Ohio State University Buckeyes academia
Thanks. Postdlf 20:52, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
- Reply to Postdlf
Hi Postdlf: I can see why you are confused by the subcategories I created. However, if you think about placing things in categories or subcategories yourself, you would probably be more confused. As you said (I also have agreed) that the names I created do not correspond to any other preexisting categories, and the ordering principles. That is because I do not see people try to categories or subcategories them here in wiki before. For example, under the Category:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, you may see they put Category:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign alumni and Category:UIUC stubs. For the Category:UIUC stubs, that means anything can go in there. To me, it is useless to categorize things that way.
From my view, any university consists of people, tangible things, and its
spirit.
When I tried to list academic professors, alumni, tangible things, and its
spirit in wiki and place their associations to their universities, I have a
problem finding suitable categories. That why I came up with
Category:List of Ohio State University people, Category:Ohio State
University landmarks properties and facilities and Category:Ohio State
University enthusiasm and entertainment. You may help to put better
wordings for these categories.
In addition, I also would like to put an emphasize on academic as well as athletics. After all universities are about education. As you may see the trend, here in wiki, is toward entertainment (although I have no problem with it because it is driven by market and demand). As you see when you check on university faculty, you will find only categories for athletic coaches listed there. When you check alumni, you can see only categories for athletic players. That is also why I put the academic term in there and categorize them separately PS: Sorry I have problems placing hyper texts--Ohho 14:30, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Ohio State Branch Campuses
editHi, I removed the sections for the individual branch campuses in the Ohio State article. The branch campuses essentially function more as independent community colleges than as integral partners to the Columbus campus and giving them so much "real estate" in the article is diproportionate to their role in the university. My suggestion would be a seperate article similar to what UM has done for its branch campuses. --Sam Harmon 14:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Buckeye pics
editHi Ohho - Sorry, but it was because of copyright issues that I had to delete them. They were nice photos, and would be useful on the page, but because photos on wikipedia are available for commercial as well as educational use, uploading them here breaches the copyright terms posted on the bioimages website. We do unfortunately have to be very careful about image uploads, the rules are quite strict (see the links mentioned by OrphanBot for fuller details). There are occasionally grounds for 'fair use' of copyright photos, but this too is very limited in what can reasonably be considered fair use, and these photos don't fall within it. Steve Baskauf (the webmaster of bioimages) is actually a wikipedia contributor, and has this posted on his user talk page: "Because of licensing incompatabilities between Wikipedia and the Bioimages website (http://bioimages.vanderbilt.edu), I can't upload the images to the Wikipedia" - if he can't do it himself, neither should we!
Have you got a camera so you get your own photos? - that would be brilliant.
Hope this helps - MPF 09:56, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! The new nut pic I added (Image:Aesculus glabra seeds.jpg) is a public domain photo (from the US Forest Service) and is also much higher resolution, so is better than a small one with a restricted license. Was there any other point about it you wanted to mention? - MPF 21:11, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Image:OSU main campus map.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:OSU main campus map.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 18:47, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- I speedy deleted it, as the fair use tag used was inapplicable, and the image description stated it was for non-commercial use only. Postdlf 22:11, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

More non-free images
editThank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images, however, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded, specifically Image:The Ohio State University masterplan at mansfield campus.jpg, may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reason, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. Please note that we take very seriously our criteria on non-free image uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. --Rkitko (talk) 20:45, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

- Hi, Ohho. Just as a followup, I wanted to let you know that I went ahead and deleted the remainder of the images you had uploaded that were related to the various Ohio University articles. They violated Wikipedia's image use policy in that they were copyrighted, non-free content that you had described as "Copyright is free for educational purposes here only, a permission from Ohio State University is required for commercial purposes and for use elsewhere." Wikipedia cannot accept images that can be reasonably replaced that are not able to be used for commercial purposes. While Wikipedia itself is non-profit, the argument is that images like that are "not free enough". They were also using an improper license, {{Non-free symbol}}, which was not appropriate since those photos were not symbols. I hope you understand the reasons why we cannot accept these images. I encourage you to take some snapshots of the campuses yourself and upload them under an acceptable license. Let me know if you need any help with that, since I live in the area, too. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 04:28, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:OSU Lima BARONS mascot.gif
editThank you for uploading Image:OSU Lima BARONS mascot.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. No content in Category:Ohio State Buckeyes soccer
editHello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Ohio State Buckeyes soccer, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Ohio State Buckeyes soccer has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Ohio State Buckeyes soccer, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. editThank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Please make sure to include an edit summary. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history. Thanks! JohnInDC (talk) 13:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Again, it would be very helpful if you'd provide edit summaries - they don't have to be elaborate ("added a category") - just something to indicate to other editors what you're doing in a succession of several score edits. Thanks! JohnInDC (talk) 13:58, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Most of them are just minor changes and are about re-arranging stuffs, there is no new content added. You should be able to compare between the new and old version. By providing summaries, it would take longer to get it done. Ohho (talk) 14:02, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Whether they are minor changes, or change content rather than add it, misses the point. By omitting summaries - for your own convenience - you are making it less convenient for other editors who must actually go check the prior version of the article, quite a few of them actually, to figure out what you are doing. It's particularly helpful when an editor goes on an editing tear, as you have, making several dozen or more edits in a sitting. Please provide summaries. It's good Wikipedia practice and doesn't risk wasting the time of others. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 14:19, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Here is a link to explain what edit summaries are for, why they're a good idea, and why editors should strive to include one with every edit: Help:Edit summary. JohnInDC (talk) 14:22, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
All I did were just adding a category to those articles or change the old category to the correct one. That was all, There was no new content added.Ohho (talk) 14:25, 25 February 2012 (UTC) Also fixing those broken hyper-links. Ohho (talk) 14:30, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Again, that's not the point. You might change what you're doing in the middle of your project and how are other editors to know, other than by actually looking at each of your edits? If they're all the same, then it would be trivial to save a bit of text in your clipboard ("refined category listing") and paste it in in each case. In addition that is not all that you are doing! You made substantial undescribed changes to the OSU template page, which I had to deconstruct edit-by-edit to repair. Please read the page I directed you to, and please provide edit summaries. At the very least it is polite to do so. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 14:31, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

It is to help easing search and group the same related work in one category.
