Ridiculous
editThis article is totally ridiculous. 64.149.176.134 19:35, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Um, any suggestions for improvement? Ccrrccrr 23:12, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
How about some info on actual snow bikes, or a conversion kit? 19:45, 23 December 2010

The FAQ
editAs a long time member of the Icebiking community and email list (since 2002) I have to say that I am glad to see this article taking off on Wikipedia. However, as a dilettante Wikipedian myself, I have to point out that FAQs are not appropriate Wikipedia content. Therefore I'm adding the Cleanup Tag to the head of the article.Elipongo 22:55, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
I moved the FAQ from here to the editthis.info server: Icebike FAQ wiki, where such a restriction doesn't exist. I hope people will take some of the ideas from that and work them back into the text here. I didn't remove the tag--I wasn't sure of the protocol for that. Ccrrccrr 23:43, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- You didn't need to delete the FAQ, a simple reworking from a Q & A format into plain prose is what's indicated. I suggest that you revert the FAQ back into the article to allow people to do just that. Good solution, btw, on making an editable FAQ on that other Wiki. -Elipongo 00:28, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that reworking into prose is what's needed. Whether the prose to rework appears here or on the other site doesn't matter much to me, but since you prefer it here, I went ahead and reverted.Ccrrccrr 00:31, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Motorsport helmets
editSome recent edits added discussion of snowmobile and motorcycle helmets. I personally tried a motorcycle helmet and found it to be a disaster: -It fogged up very rapidly--motorcyclists don't breath as heavily as cyclists, and don't often ride in very cold weather. -It was not designed for leaning forward as much as I was leaning, and so I had trouble seeing forward, and it was uncomfortably heavy. Presumably some helmets are made for leaning forward more, and that would not be a problem.
Anyway I'm wondering where the information came from that using snowmobile and motorcycle helmets is a good idea. Is it your personal experience? Or just your idea? Ccrrccrr (talk) 02:09, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
- I just looked at some snowmobile helmets. They have double-lens face shields and "breath boxes" that keep ones breath away from the face shield, so they probably work, whereas I doubt motorcycle helmets do. I'm going to edit accordingly for now, but I would be interested to hear why if I'm wrong.Ccrrccrr (talk) 02:18, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Requested move

The result of the move request was: Page moved to winter biking. Please propose another RM if you wish the page to be moved to cold weather biking. Ucucha 14:14, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Icebiking → Winter biking — I propose that the page be moved to the title "Winter biking"...unless I am mistaken, Winter biking refers more broadly to the various types of cycling in winter (commuting on winter roads, riding through snow, riding on ice-covered lakes), whereas "Icebiking" refers to a sub-type of winter biking: riding bikes on ice-covered ponds or lakes, using customized bikes with screw-studded tires. IMHO, the lion's share of people riding in winter are doing it on roads and snow-covered surfaces, not on ice. — OnBeyondZebrax (talk) 23:24, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- I generally agree with the move. The term icebiking would naturally mean what you say. In fact, I believe that it is more often used among a very small group of people as a whimsical name for biking at temperatures below 0 C, on any surface, as on the icebike.org web site and icebike mailing list. But we shouldn't name the article based on that whimsical unusual usage.
- The only problem with "winter biking" is that it would include biking in the rain in Portland and San Francisco, for example, which isn't really properly the same subject. If everyone used centigrade, we could call it sub-zero biking. Any other ideas for a name? Ccrrccrr (talk) 23:46, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- Support "Winter biking", since the "Winter Olympics" are ice and snow related, even if it rains in Vancouver, and so are "winter sports" 70.29.210.242 (talk) 08:18, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Move to Cold weather biking. This actually gets more google hits then either "Icebiking", "Ice biking" or "Winter biking". It has the additional advantage of not restricting the activity to only a 90 day window. Clearly the conditions for this exist outside of winter! Vegaswikian (talk) 01:03, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- I was a little skeptical (above) about "Winter biking", but I'm convinced by the "winter sports" argument and precedent. However, I oppose "Cold weather biking". That's too vague and broad for this article. Yes, if it's raining in San Francisco in January, that shouldn't be counted, and yes, if it's snowing in the Yukon in April it should count, but I don't think people will tend to read "winter biking" in the narrow technical sense of biking during those three months, but will rather read it as "biking in winter conditions". Those conditions include more than just cold, as discussed in the article. Ccrrccrr (talk) 23:19, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Support either Winter biking or Cold weather biking. Propaniac (talk) 19:24, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
