Thanks very much guys :) I really do appreciate it! I'm glad to see my bit of effort in the State Library and the Records Office paid off for all concerned - I now have a greatly enhanced understanding of this part of Perth. The contributions by several of you were fantastic - especially those responsible for the Natural History section and the people who reviewed my wording and construction. I owe a few people a shout at the next meetup, I think (for those of you not in Perth, consider yourself virtually shouted) Orderinchaos 11:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

B. brownii

edit

Good question; I don't know. I used to read it as "brown-eye" but at some point I switched over to "brownie-eye". I'm fairly certain "brown-ee" is wrong. I'll ask Cas. Hesperian 04:38, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Depending on my mood, I'll say "brownie-eye" or "brown-ee-ee". In english latin there are no rules, though there are enough pedantic scholars trying to tell us otherwise. I did Latin for 6 yers at school and it is so different that I pronounce it however. Correctly the sound 'eye' is -ae in latin, whereas a long 'i' is 'ee'. I alwys say Petrophile to rhyme with 'paedophile' which amuses or annoys some plant friends of mine. cheers, Casliber | talk | contribs 05:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bates

edit

Testing your memory here nut we had a discussion re Daisy Bates claims of cannibalism. I found a quote from A. O. Neville in the Daily news 20th February 1928, "There has been no actual evidence of cannibalistic activities by aborigines in western or central australia" this was in response to Bates sending some aborigines to perth claiming they had a bag stained with humans blood and a skull. You can find interesting things in old papers, the daily news during that period on every tuesday reported who registered a vehicle, where they lived(actual address), type of vehicle and the registration number of the vehicle. But what I was looking for was info on the centenary events so between january 2 1928 and feb 28 1928 there was only one reported(16/2/1928) request for people with associations to national organisations to request they hold an event in Perth during 1929 to which the will offer travle assistance for those attending. Gnangarra 13:55, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Seeing hes just officially quit/gone quiet for two weeks - i think the committe that are named along the road in kings park - some of the 1929 plans actually started in 1927 (clue number one) and they would have more likely been reported in the west not the daily. sigh SatuSuro 14:24, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I assumed that since one member of the committee was also editor at the west, that west would be inundated with information where as the daily would limited to more significante events. Gnangarra 07:43, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am trying to start a wiki that is focused on wrestling and video games. I figured that since it uses the same design as Wikipedia (MediaWiki, or whatever it's called), that I could basically copy wrestling and video game templates like {{Template:Infobox Wrestling event}} and {{Template:Infobox VG}}, but they aren't working. Here is what I ended up with [1]. Would you mind creating a few templates there? Specifically: Template:Infobox VG, Template:Infobox Wrestler, Template:Infobox Wrestling event and Template:Infobox Wrestling team since those are the only four I would really use. WA regions

edit

By the way, do you have any more information about the regions(?) used in the 19th Century WA you mentioned at Template talk:Infobox Australian Place: Swan, Cockburn Sound, Canning, Avon, etc.. just that it has got me interested! --Astrokey44 11:26, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think they the same thing as the divisions described at [2]: "In 1880 the state [WA] was divided into sectional plans". Here is a map another one --Astrokey44 12:52, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Might I suggest Land districts of Western Australia? :) --Astrokey44 13:51, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have started Cadastral divisions of Western Australia (not sure if thats the best name but just to keep in line with the other articles). I dont know anything about the Location A, location 32 etc regions that you were talking about, perhaps you would like to add this information. --Astrokey44 03:16, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah I see what you mean.. like how counties are divided into parishes (and i think some other even smaller divisions in Victoria too). thanks about the article, if there are any mistakes in the map let me know because on the 1909 map they seemed fairly obsessed with the goldfield boundaries and the lines look almost the same as the lines between districts. They didnt show the area around Perth too well either. Also, I dont know whether the districts are the same today as they were then, or if there were any new districts proclaimed in the east. --Astrokey44 03:47, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template

edit

Hi there, I noticed your vote/comment at the TfD about the new template being rather on the large side. Just so you know, the original template as I intended it was meant to look like this, a nice and compact informative template, but some editors felt that a separation must occur on the lines of the old template hence the discussion on the talk-page. As you will find out, I disagree with the idea of creating separate sections infinitely (the subject of SSB is potentially very large) but I have to respect the majority. I thought you may like to go through the short discussion there and weigh in with any opinion you may have, it would be appreciated. Regards, Ekantik talk 02:52, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Although in all honesty it appears agreed to keep the separation, but I think your opinion would be worth noting nevertheless. Ekantik talk 02:55, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aquinas College, Perth

edit

Many thanks for your comments on Aquinas College. It was indeed a very confusing situation, especially when the editors have a proven past history of incorrectly promoting their article to a new status. The article does now appear to have gone through the GA process. I suspect the nomination will be challenged in due course. The editors have written at length on the school but in my view far too many of the references are to the school website, the school intranet (which is restricted access) and school diaries and handbooks. Very little seems to have been referenced from reliable secondary sources. I know very little about Australian schools so I will leave the matter to our Australian editors to sort out if they want to. Dahliarose 15:59, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Perth assessments

edit

Perth, believe it or not, was next on my list to activate. I (perhaps incorrectly) assumed most of you WA folk had moved over to WP WA and your focus was there. I'll see what I can do a litle later tonight (within an hour or so, just getting the kids into bed for school tomorrow) and aim to get WP Perth up to date with the rest of them. :) -- Longhair\talk 09:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I read your message again. And realise you made a good point. Perth assessments should contribute to the WA count, as Melbourne should contribute to Victoria etc. Currently, that isn't happening, but I dare say now the multi-level code is functional (and many thanks to Cyberjunkie for leaping ahead here and helping us out), it wouldn't be to difficult to arrange for that to occur. -- Longhair\talk 09:49, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
How's this example look (category-wise)?. Articles in relevant categories contribute towards statistical counts. -- Longhair\talk 10:20, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. There's a bug or two a coffee might fix, but it's close to the result you're after. A good idea :) Don't know why I didn't see this for myself :) -- Longhair\talk 10:24, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm close, but I'm going to have to let this slide until the morning. Feel free to assess any Perth related articles in the meantime. The basic code works. I'm just not happy with the result as is for now and will look into it in the AM :) Cheers. -- Longhair\talk 10:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

As I learned the hard way, if you have a stake in a speedily deleted article, it is better to ask the deleter to reverse their actions, or get another admin to undelete it, rather than undeleting it yourself. That way, you maintain the illusionimpression that admins only ever use their tools to enforce community consensus and standards, and never for their own ends. Having undeleted it, you ought to let Betacommand know what you've done. Well done for taking it to AfD though. (Don't stress about this, it is a minor issue, and BITE applies to newb admins too ;-) ) Hesperian 02:03, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just looking the Annual report which is independently produced an certified as required by the ASX qualifies as WP:RS and WP:V as a primary source so you can use information from that to expand the article, though I would suggest you avoid future growth projections and only use it for past event material, asset value figures, profit and subsidiary type information. Anything you can do to help clarify the position would be helpful. I agree it was probably a misunderstanding and he created the account he wished to usurp. If that account confirms it is willing to be usurped, the usurpation can go ahead straight away (never mind waiting 7 days or the fact it has edits). But as it could also be a third party account interfering with his original request, he does need to clarify what he wants to happen... WjBscribe 03:32, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
