IUPAC mess

edit

Well done for registering. Now put something on your userpage, so we'll come to recognise you by some quirky quote or something. (Mine is fairly boring.)

I can't blame you for the situation of the IUPAC situation at all. There is no final source for these. This is a good point of discussion for WP:PHARM, where the discussion is already in progress. If you think there is a point in expanding the drugbox, you could leave a message on the talkpage associated with the drugbox template {{Drugbox}}. JFW | T@lk 22:26, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is already a field for alternate names: | synonyms = . You may use it as such. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 23:47, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
And, by the way, welcome to Wikipedia :) Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 23:49, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Triflubazam: are you sure about the 1H and about the 3,5H? I think there should be no 1H and no 5H. The discrepancies with the pubchem are caused by the direction of counting, the 1,5 benzodiazepines have that ambiguity. 70.137.136.112 (talk) 10:12, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

ok, just I see no H in 1 and 5. But another thing: can you insert spaces or line breaks at appropriate points for line wrap? I have done that now in many cases, because the drugbox gets expanded horizontally otherwise, and then doesn't correctly display on a narrow screen or if you have sidebars on in the browser. 70.137.136.112 (talk) 11:53, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just inserted spaces behind the dashes in the name. It then displays the name wrapped around into several lines as it sees fit from the other drugbox parameters, e.g. 7-chloro-(sp) 1-methyl-(sp) 5-phenyl-(sp) blah-(sp) blah-(sp) etc. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 12:46, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes its primitive, but works. I have also seen use of a (angle bracket)BR/(angle bracket) primitive somewhere but have not tried it myself. It inserts a line break. Maybe thats the trick if you know where you want to go to the next line? 70.137.134.30 (talk) 12:53, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

For complete auto-layout the damn machine would have to recognize separator characters, probably for IUPAC only the dash. Even this would not be satisfactory, as there may be other subgroupings where you would insert a line wrap conveniently. What you need is a parser which knows the IUPAC grammar, which is not even a regular grammar, but has to be parsed recursively, because it contains nested subexpressions. I think that is beyond the scope of the table layout programs, so you have to do it ugly, manually and the primitive way. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 20:30, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The zero width space is a good idea, but awkward to edit and read in the source. In my insertions of spaces I didn't insert space after all and every dash, but tried to do it somewhat "logically" to separate subgroupings I would feel facilitate reading. Thank you for the monster effort you did put in that IUPAC cleanup. Many articles here need scientific consolidation. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 22:13, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

IUPAC in cortisol article

edit

Hi, the revision you made to the IUPAC name on the cortisol article is displaying many of the "character not found" rectangles for me instead of whatever it is you intended (displays as "(11β)-11,17,21-trihydroxypregn-4-ene-3,20-dione"). May just be my browser (internet explorer, not the current version) but other users using this browser may have the same issue. Not sure if this is a problem you've encountered before? -Zefryl (talk) 17:29, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am afraid using just spaces is the most primitive, ugly, unsophisticated and portable solution. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 09:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This does display for me fine on my home computer (running firefox), so probably is an effect of browser. I still wonder whether others running older versions of explorer have this problem. - Zefryl (talk) 19:59, 4 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am using firefox as well and it displays ok. But spaces are more portable, less sophisticated. They will allow line wrap on every browser, with whatever setting of character set. Everything above the basic ascii is of questionable portability. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 10:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have started a discussion thread at WT:PHARM:CAT, and would value your input if avaliable. kilbad (talk) 19:16, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

IUPAC name

edit

Hi P-kun80. I don't suppose you would be able to come up with an IUPAC name for ryanodine? I can't seem to find one, and the structure is a bit beyond my naming skills. Help would be appreciated if you have time! Meodipt (talk) 22:01, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
